  Antique And Classic Automobiles Tour
Posted by: GTBrandon - 11-21-2017, 02:54 PM - Forum: Events - Replies (8)

Date: December 2nd
Time: 11am
Location: 114 S. New Street, Staunton VA
$5 for Alum, Free for current paying members

So I somehow found myself on a tour of this "museum" of sorts a couple weeks back and loved it. I talked to the owner afterward and was able to set up a date for MM to come and get a tour and then hang out downtown afterward. It is in downtown Staunton, VA so I was thinking to have the tour at 11am, then grab lunch afterward and end the afternoon with some nice roads back towards Harrisonburg or farther out if anyone knows of something good.

The date is December 2nd and the location is called Bruce A. Elder Antique and Classic Automobiles and the address looks to be 114 S New St, Staunton, VA 24401 for those of you who don't use this thing called Google or Siri to find your way around. It's about a 30min drive from JMU so I want to meet in R1 at 10am and have the convoy leaving at 10:15 or so. But for those who aren't coming from JMU, just plan to be in Staunton around 10:45. It's downtown so parking isn't the greatest but I believe there was a parking garage right behind the museum.

For current students, admission is free as it's covered under your dues, for anyone else who would like to join either alum or friends, it will be $5. For the number of cars you get to see and history you learn from this guy who gives the tours, it's well worth it, also come on, it's $5. So I want to get a headcount going, If you are interested, just comment down below and feel free to text/PM me if you want any more details.

Race Car V4.0 - Ground up
Posted by: D_Eclipse9916 - 11-21-2017, 12:21 PM - Forum: Member's Projects - Replies (89)

V4.0? Yes V4.0.  A Brief History. Warning: Not so brief!

V1.0 - Where it all started.  My GTS2 E36.  This car started as a street car bought in Harrisonburg (the one in foreground)
Fun Fact: I autocrossed this car the day after I bought it and blew out the power steering lines.  This was only the start!
[Image: 11235043_10102519724902969_4463384090786...e=5A90F5AA]

I autocrossed it heavily and started tracking it just in HPDE for about a year.  Got my 1st Championship with Capital Driving Club as "Driver of the Year"  with lots of 1st place PAX finishes.  It was a fun street car, but some prodding from Jon Felton had me go Time Trialing in 2011.
[Image: 40149_160784680621755_7234968_n.jpg?oh=4...e=5A9383A7]
[Image: 55403_161726673858568_617083_o.jpg?oh=c8...e=5AAA1E6D]

In 2011 I had a good year, winning lots of Regionals Time Trials and winning the 2011 NASA National Championship in TTC.  From there I caged the car and went racing.  Madison Motorsports has a lot of history with this car with a good prank on me using pink racer's tape of which I had no idea during the race.  I would be further pranked by being told I was DQed by NASA for it in my 1st ever win. Luckily it was a good joke and everyone had their laugh...and I got my first race win!
[Image: 466454_10100464032297429_662854364_o.jpg...e=5AA85C1C]
[Image: 478382_10100470388175199_1507254067_o.jp...e=5AAA4104]

In 2012 I did very well and set multiple track records and lots of 1st place finishes.  I was excited for the NASA Championships, but ended up breaking on the first lap due to a failed part.  In 2013 the Championships were out West and I held off due to budget.
[Image: 1049153_10101176649980879_224399774_o.jp...e=5A8CE8BD]

I was having a lot fun and this car was solid as a rock. During a rain race I was solidly leading and decided to "have some fun" seeing how fast I could go around Summit in dorifto mode.  As you can imagine, it led to lots of fun, and then heartbreak.  I ended up getting too much angle in T10, hit the steering rack limiters and the wall.
[Image: 1175113_10201915793722170_689265605_n.jp...e=5A929C9C]

The not so fun
[Image: 1149614_10101247621278829_2046985490_o.j...e=5A96395E]

So for 2014 I went out there with a Raail Coating and did well.  2014 marked the end where I won the 2014 NASA Championship for GTS2 and promptly sold the car looking for a change.
[Image: 10626177_10204626771618578_5188917555215...e=5A9D9EB3]

Race Car V1.5 - Chump Car.  Fellow Madison Motorsporter Paul Galleron and I along with a GTS buddy of mine Donnie Weymer ran a Chump Car for about 4 events.  It was a lot of fun, but was exponentially more expensive than we expected to run.  Sold it off as I just had more fun running NASA.
[Image: 1504153_10101461241981229_89914798_o.jpg...e=5A90C101]

Race Car 2.0 - Spec E46.  I wanted to try out a Spec Class and SE46 was seeing phenomenal growth.  This time I took an existing GTS2 car, bought it and transformed it into a SE46.   This car turned out be absolutely cursed.
1st Race Weekend - Blown headgasket in 1st race
2nd Race Weekend - Car was garbage and pushy.  Got REALLY lucky with a 2nd and a 1st.
3rd Race Weekend - Battery decided to eat itself ON GRID for the Saturday.  Was on Pole and had to sit while the field left. Sunday Race = 1st with an intermittent ABS
4th Race Weekend - 1st on Saturday, 1st on Sunday.  Interesting Story here, around the last corner on the last lap, my motor let go completely.  I thought I was done for with James Clay right behind me.  He misinterpreted my slowing down as a yellow flag or caution up ahead.  By the time he realized we were still green, he pulled around but not just before I coasted across the finish line for the win.

[Image: 1483382_10102433175643379_63526013347534...e=5A898D2F]

By this time I was PISSED about the car.  2 Motor failures in 4 weekends, 3 DNFs in 8 races, and the car was fighting me.  I admit I got frustrated and gave up and put the car up for sale. My heart wasn't in it anymore. I finished one more weekend with 2x 2nd Place finishes and then traded this car for V3.0

V3 and the start of V4 in the next update..

I need to clean things up before I can move. Trying to downsize and simplify a bit.

Electronics
Sony Bravia 32" LCD TV - $80
Has 2x HDMI inputs, composite, component, and VGA. Optical and RCA audio output. Includes remote. Works perfectly, just don't need it anymore. I think it's only 720p because that was hot shit in 2010.

Huawei Android Watch - $190
This works with either iOS or Android, but is a far better experience with an Android phone. Runs Android Wear 2.x and is in very good condition. Battery will last two days with regular use. Includes watch, charger, and original black leather band (pictured) that is in very good shape. You can swap bands for other standard watch bands, too.

Fitbit Blaze Fitness Tracker/Smartwatch - $110
Great condition, was an upgrade from my old Flex until I got the Android watch. Comes with blue rubber-ish band but standard watch bands can be used as well.

Logitech 5.1 surround sound system - $80
I've been using this in the garage for a few years. Sounds great, speakers can be wall mounted. Rated at 70 watts RMS.

Furniture
Ikea dining table and chairs, rug
Ikea Ryggestad dining table with matching chairs/bench. $125 for the table, $50 for both chairs, $50 for bench. Take it all for $200. Like the rug? Take it for $50.

Garage
72x48" shelving (x2) - $50 each
I have two of these that match. Five shelves each, they can hold a lot of weight. $50 each. Home Depot will sell these new for $90 apiece.

Harbor Freight 2-ton high-lift steel floor jack - $75
Bought this to use with my F150 as my standard Craftsman jack wouldn't go high enough. This worked well so I think you'd be fine to use it with any SUV or 1/2-ton pickup. Rated at 2 tons and is 'rapid lift' which doesn't mean much, but it lifts easily. I only used it a few times. It's a heavy mofo. Costs $130 new at HF, take mine for $75.

Craftsman aluminum floor jack - $20
This jack is ancient but was kept in my open trailer and worked fine when called upon. Looks like hell. Pretty sure it's a 2-ton, it'll lift your broken BMW or Miata just fine.

WTB something to replace my 8yr old travel zoom camera
Posted by: BLINGMW - 11-14-2017, 09:20 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (3)

Anyone have an at least 10x zoom, fairly compact (pocketable) camera that's only a few years old they aren't using? I just realized my Panasonic DMC-ZS3 25mm-300mm is 8 years old and the video from it won't even play on a chromebook the .MOV codec is uses is so old.

  2018 Honda Civic Type-R

About fucking time.

I sold my M3 about a month ago, and to be perfectly honest I really didn't know what I'd end up with.  I wanted a CTR but every dealership I called wanted $5000 over MSRP, and I called as far away as Chicago.  I had kinda written off the Focus RS because of the rear diff overheating (on track) issue, and the fact that there is a growing number of owners with head gasket failures.

I was beginning to think I would just punt and buy a Fit for the time being, but then Jeff (owner of vtec.net) told me he had a hookup through Honda corporate that could potentially get a car routed my way.  Long story short, several phone calls, emails, and a lot of waiting later, I got a call from Hendrick Honda (Woodbridge) that my car had arrived.

Went to the dealership on Friday morning to pick the car up, halfway expecting to have to sit through a bunch of dealer bullshit.  But the folks at Hendrick Honda were pretty straightforward, didn't try to force upsells on me, and were all-around easy to deal with.  I was a bit annoyed that they put pinstripes and their dealer badge on my car but I asked them to take them off and they did, no questions asked.

First Impression

So far I'm just breaking the car in, but the power feels surprisingly linear.  You don't get that big wallop of power when the turbo spools up like I did on my WRX.  Handling wise it's about as comfortable as my M3 was but a bit more lively when I put it in R+ mode (there's Comfort, Sport, and R+).  This thing corners very flat at street speeds, surprisingly so.  Steering weight is nice and not overboosted, and the brakes feel great.  Maybe not as much feel as my Cayman, but more than the M3.

Thrust-wise, it feels pretty quick.  It may even feel a bit quicker from low RPM's than the M3 because of the powerband, even though the M had a lot more top end power.

Winter

First order of business is gonna be winter wheels and tires.  These ContiSports are wayyy too aggressive for the winter and easily spin up through 1st and 2nd, even though I'm not even going WOT yet.  Don't know whether I'm going to buy some 20-inch winter tires, or a set of smaller wheels and winter tires yet.

Hey everyone! I’m David and I’m glad to finally be on the forums after much time in MM! I drive a green 2006 Porsche Cayenne and make full use of its off road capabilities. I love to throw my bikes on the roof and head up into the mountains, so if you ride, hit me up. I have a lot of history with domestic and European cars and am always looking to learn more.

Hypothetical Garage - - Europe Edition
Posted by: Apoc - 11-04-2017, 03:00 PM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (29)

Assume you live in a right-hand traffic (left-hand drive) country in Europe. This means you have legit access to all the European models, including the ones that never made it to the US. We all have those stupid ideas, like a TVR, but what are you filling your garage with assuming the following? Any vehicles need to already be legal to operate in Europe, so doing a fresh import from Japan is only possible if it's already legally registered in the EU.

> Budget: 50,000 USD / 43,000 EUR (total sales price[s], excluding tax/fees)
> You can spend the money on one, two, or a dozen vehicles
> You need at least one family vehicle, which includes a legitimate trunk, four or more doors, automatic, and is reliable)
> Spending all the money on one car means you're walking, biking, or taking public transportation
> The second vehicle doesn't have to be a car, but winter commutes are gonna be cold and dark
> The second vehicle can be a manual, but you will commute in a city with it
> Your family drives 10k miles/year, excluding road trips, but you're obviously going to be touring Europe by car
> You live in a city or barely outside it; parallel parking is a definite
> Tracking either car isn't an option, but you may do some untimed events if your second vehicle is cool enough
> Towing something lightweight with at least one vehicle would be a nice bonus

edit: the bulleted list function is broken

  BendPak MD-6XP mid-rise car lift, 6000lb Capacity
Posted by: PDenbigh - 11-04-2017, 02:32 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (23)

Lightly used Bendpack MD-6XP mid-rise car lift for sale. 6,000lb capacity. Comes with 8 pads (4 low, 4 tall). Is considered stand-alone (doesn't need bolted to the floor) and can be moved around a shop if needed. Runs on standard 110v power and is quiet and smooth.

More info here: http://www.bendpak.com/car-lifts/special...d-6xp.aspx

New price is between $2,000-$2,250. Selling this one for $1000. It was used at a repair shop for a few months, and then I acquired it and used it twice. Sold the project car and don't have a need for it anymore.

It's built really well, which means it's also heavy and will need transported on a flat bed trailer. No way to load it into a pickup truck. Will need to use a come-along or winch (which I have and can help with) to get it in the trailer. (or about 6 really strong guys)

Located in Staunton, VA.  If you are in the general Staunton or Harrisonburg area I can deliver it and help you get it set up.

This would fit in a 1-car garage just fine, FYI.
