2018 Honda Civic Type-R - G.Irish - 11-13-2017

About fucking time.

I sold my M3 about a month ago, and to be perfectly honest I really didn't know what I'd end up with.  I wanted a CTR but every dealership I called wanted $5000 over MSRP, and I called as far away as Chicago.  I had kinda written off the Focus RS because of the rear diff overheating (on track) issue, and the fact that there is a growing number of owners with head gasket failures.

I was beginning to think I would just punt and buy a Fit for the time being, but then Jeff (owner of vtec.net) told me he had a hookup through Honda corporate that could potentially get a car routed my way.  Long story short, several phone calls, emails, and a lot of waiting later, I got a call from Hendrick Honda (Woodbridge) that my car had arrived.

Went to the dealership on Friday morning to pick the car up, halfway expecting to have to sit through a bunch of dealer bullshit.  But the folks at Hendrick Honda were pretty straightforward, didn't try to force upsells on me, and were all-around easy to deal with.  I was a bit annoyed that they put pinstripes and their dealer badge on my car but I asked them to take them off and they did, no questions asked.

First Impression

So far I'm just breaking the car in, but the power feels surprisingly linear.  You don't get that big wallop of power when the turbo spools up like I did on my WRX.  Handling wise it's about as comfortable as my M3 was but a bit more lively when I put it in R+ mode (there's Comfort, Sport, and R+).  This thing corners very flat at street speeds, surprisingly so.  Steering weight is nice and not overboosted, and the brakes feel great.  Maybe not as much feel as my Cayman, but more than the M3.

Thrust-wise, it feels pretty quick.  It may even feel a bit quicker from low RPM's than the M3 because of the powerband, even though the M had a lot more top end power.

Winter

First order of business is gonna be winter wheels and tires.  These ContiSports are wayyy too aggressive for the winter and easily spin up through 1st and 2nd, even though I'm not even going WOT yet.  Don't know whether I'm going to buy some 20-inch winter tires, or a set of smaller wheels and winter tires yet.

I love that this thread is just pictures. I want to drive this thing.

So we like these now? Just need to know the popular opinion so I can agree with it.

Nice pickup, G. Didn't expect this, honestly. Then again, I don't really know you, so I don't know what to ever expect.

I think G and I were the only ones to go on record saying we like this car on this board at least. I know some others think it is over-styled.

Wait, did you get an s2k too or am I missing something?

I think it might be more of a Beagle/Terrier mix, but I don't know my dogs too well.

Got all excited when you announced Championship White but I wasn't sure if you found an ITR or the CTR
Can't wait to hear your opinion and experiences; and maybe get a ride-along if you're back at JMU sometime.

And I thought you'd finally seen the light when you got the M3.

Cool pickup!  They are a little crazy to look at, but I like that in a way.  Weird angle, but it looks surprisingly bigger than the S2000.  Definitely looking forward to what you think of it long term.

That first shot of tiny parking spots is giving me door ding anxiety.

been waitin' for this one. love that you're back in a honda again!

just saw the footage today of some european outlet that got it up to a 276kph ceiling on a top speed run. 170mph in a civic hatchback, from the factory. amazing times, these.

Man that thing is a Stormtrooper! Looking forward to following this thread. Any other immediate plans for it mod wise or just put some winter tires on and get a feel for it?

I took those pics at my buddy's house.  He has a S2k, new Ridgeline, and a MV Agusta Dragster 800.

If I could've gotten a F80 M3 for the right price I may have gone that route.  I drove a M4 a couple of months ago and liked it.  M2 is too small (and pricey), and a M5 is too big for my tastes right now.  Maybe I'll get the next gen M3 if BMW doesn't eff it up.

There aren't a lot of mods out for it yet,  but I might try an exhaust if a nice tasteful one is developed.  May also try a tune but really it has enough power through the front wheels already.

Not sure about premiums, but we looked at Civics at the auto show yesterday. I was surprised the sport (or whatever) was stickered at #30k and the CTR was only like $6k more. I guess you opt for the sport if you don't like the styling of these (which I'm not crazy about)?

In other news, I was surprised how big the trunk is. My wife actually wants a new Civic now... but she's always missed her Mazda3.

RE: 2018 Honda Civic Type-R - G.Irish - 11-13-2017

Yeah style-wise I feel like it's a bit over the top for me now. But I'm a longtime Honda fan and it fits my current needs. In person I don't find it as outrageous really.

My brother has a new civic hatchback. It's a great little commuter car with the 1.5L turbo making it fun for what it is. The hatchback is yuuuuuge and they have a ton of features for the price point.

I have to admit, I'm tempted to go check out a new Si or Accord with the 2.0 turbo.

RE: 2018 Honda Civic Type-R - Senor_Taylor - 11-13-2017

Didn't you just buy a car?

I feel like Honda missed the sweet spot with the new Si.  Had they put the Accord's 2.0T in there with 250 hp I think the Si would be selling like hotcakes.  With the 1.5T it's okay but not setting the world on fire.

Speaking of which, Honda is offering a $199/month lease for the Si right now.  I don't think I've ever seen them offer an aggressive lease on that car.  And come to think of it, only a few months ago they were offering $189/month for the Civic Hatchback Sport.

That's cheap as fuck. That's a great deal for most people

Hey, neat!

Subaru should be ashamed of themselves. That is all.

RE: 2018 Honda Civic Type-R - navin - 11-14-2017

hey Gerald - nice pick up man, glad to see you back in a Honda Wink

Don't these cars also have issues with overheating on the track as well? I thought i read of a few guys that did trackdays were having issues, but it seems Honda of America is kind of backing the owners and saying they'll take care of it.

Either way excited to hear more about the car as you break it in.
