Assume you live in a right-hand traffic (left-hand drive) country in Europe. This means you have legit access to all the European models, including the ones that never made it to the US. We all have those stupid ideas, like a TVR, but what are you filling your garage with assuming the following? Any vehicles need to already be legal to operate in Europe, so doing a fresh import from Japan is only possible if it's already legally registered in the EU.
> Budget: 50,000 USD / 43,000 EUR (total sales price[s], excluding tax/fees)
> You can spend the money on one, two, or a dozen vehicles
> You need at least one family vehicle, which includes a legitimate trunk, four or more doors, automatic, and is reliable)
> Spending all the money on one car means you're walking, biking, or taking public transportation
> The second vehicle doesn't have to be a car, but winter commutes are gonna be cold and dark
> The second vehicle can be a manual, but you will commute in a city with it
> Your family drives 10k miles/year, excluding road trips, but you're obviously going to be touring Europe by car
> You live in a city or barely outside it; parallel parking is a definite
> Tracking either car isn't an option, but you may do some untimed events if your second vehicle is cool enough
> Towing something lightweight with at least one vehicle would be a nice bonus

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

At least I didn't say it had to be within 100 km? Honestly, there's very little in the way of requirements for the cars. I'm just trying to get everyone in the same life stage, to see how people would spend their money if they had to be somewhat responsible. The impetus was me having lunch with someone who just came back from a three year stint in Europe. He said they were a one car family while there, so that got me thinking.

You're looking at 10 y/o or more, so that doesn't really fit the bill. RS3 Sportback?
Didn't they stop making the M5 estates like 10 years ago too? I can't see having a truck in a city? I'm thinking maybe you guys haven't lived like inside a large city? Or maybe I just think of city living differently... like, wanting to fit in smaller parking spots.

If that's too old, I change my answer to an E63 AMG Estate

They didnt stop selling them in Europe like they did in the US in 2008.

1) 2017 6cyl, 6spd manual diesel Merc Vito, the reliable family hauler and countryside tour vacationer, can also handle light towing and picking up home things. $40k
2) 2010ish BMW 120d, manual, convertible for less reliable daily use and weekend pilgrimages to nurburgring. $10k

I think you missed the budget cap. Getting either for under $50k requires you purchase something that's old. I couldn't find a LHD RS4 that isn't well out of warranty for under that amount. RS6? Fuggedaboutit.

I'd have a real hard time saying no to an RS2 and a Huffy 10 speed.
Let me digest this a bit more.

The RS4 I posted was under the budget. I didnt look for LHD cars, so if the market is different b/t UK & the rest of Yurop, I dont know what to say.
I'd probably add a vintage Vespa to that garage for city riding, and be set.

The RS4 you posted hadn't met the reserve.
Also, are you really putting your family in a likely-out-of-warranty 450 hp Audi while you take your Vespa to work? I don't buy it.

I mean, I've made worse automotive purchasing decisions. Our car situation this summer was a 135 and a Vespa.
Laura sent me a photo of a blue M2 while on vacation and said "I like this one"
