Project M3: V8 noises and kid seats
Posted by: D_Eclipse9916 - 12-04-2017, 12:15 PM - Forum: Member's Projects - Replies (60)

Instead of clogging up an autox thread, might as well make my new project a thread itself.

I am an E36 guy through and through.  I love them, my latest red one was 5th E36 M3.  I bought it as a "keep this forever" car and therefore took my time and found an excellent example.  Fast forward 7 months and now it's for sale.  Why?

With a kid, I am suddenly paranoid.  There are no "anchors" as most modern cars have (even my truck has them).  What this means is looping a seatbelt around in the back seat that is still "loose" and moves around more than I am comfortable with for my first born.  So my attempt at getting a 4 seater has me not 100% comfortable using it as such.  Plus it's just more of a pain than the anchor method.
Secondly, for something that is supposed to be around town, the noises are a bit lackluster.  A proper E36 M3 sounds good, but nothing like a V8. When your wife comments on the exhaust being "meh", you know got a problem.  Making it louder would just introduce more of the same type of noise.
Third, it needed more power.  I planned on S54 swapping it, and had accrued 99% of the parts.  With the kid, I just dont want to be taking on a lot of new projects
Fourth, moving down to NC means my cars needed to pass an OBD2 Emissions. I could possibly get away with it, it just depends on an inspector, and it's just another tick against the swap.
Fifth, no classing. I thought it might be "somewhere in the realm" of STR but even locally being 1000lbs heavier than the competition (STR NDs are 2200 or less) and on the same size and compound of tires meant there is zero chance.

I overlooked a lot of these things because my love for the E36 and cost.  Nothing under ~$32k with 4 seats really peaked my interest and was a competitive car.  Really the only 4 seater competitive cars is the 2011+ Comp Package E92s in the 30s, 2015+ 1LE Camaros in the upper 30s or a BMW M2 in the $50s.  I just couldn't afford them knowing the depreciation would kill me in 3 years.

Then a friend posted up about a 2011 Comp Package with zero options.  The car had been tracked a couple times in One Lap but well taken care of and what really peaked my interest was they needed it gone NOW.  And priced it accordingly about $10k below Kelly Blue Book.  Finally it was in my price range and I pulled the trigger.

2011 BMW M3 with Competition Package and zero other options 76k miles
White with Black Interior
Carbon Roof Coupe
Black Speed Clothe Interior
Comp Package Includes:
ZCP EDC Shocks with 10mm lower ride height and "slightly" stiffer springs
1/2 wider wheels all the way around (this was needed especially for stock classing)
Retuned EDC mapping/traction control mapping
No heated seats, no Nav, no fancy things.  Lightest available Factory combo.

Came with Aftermarket:
Dinan "cat-back" Exhaust
Dinan Tune
Dinan Underdrive Pulley
5x 18x10 Volk "Rays" wheels with Michelin Pilot Sports
Ohlins Road and Track Coilovers

It was posted on Cyber Monday, so I went and drove it that day and promised to buy it. Owner couldn't get paperwork till Friday.  Since I knew I would be building it for FS, I went ahead and took advantage of Cyber Monday Deals and bought:
Bimmerworld Race Exhaust
18x9 +30 and 18x10 + 25 Apex ARC-8 FS legal wheels
Dinan Front Sway Bar

I had RRT before pickup reinstall stock tune (Dinan is locked to VIN and is free to get reloaded if I want later), grab me a stock crank pulley and clear all services.  Plan is to reinstall stock crank pulley, sell the Dinan Exhaust, Rays wheels, Ohlins, and underdrive pulley while installing stock stuff and Bimmerworlds exhaust (lighter than Dinan). This also will help me recuperate a significant amount of money and hopefully after all is said and done only be 2k more than the E36 +S54 swap will sell for in the end.

Picked up the car Friday night along with the BW race exhaust.  Woke up early Saturday and installed the BW Race Exhaust.  I couldn't help myself  [emoji1] .

Sunday went out and autoxed it.  The Pilot Sports were garbage and I pretty much looked like I had never launched a car before but still had a ton of fun and proved to be more competitive than I thought against the proper RE71R shod STR cars.  The car makes great noises, and compared to a lot of the E90s/E92s I have driven feels good because of the weight advantage.

  Project : Purple Princess Pontiac
Posted by: JustinG - 12-03-2017, 11:20 PM - Forum: Member's Projects - Replies (25)

So we were offered a garage kept Pontiac solstice for free 99 PO just said it needs a new battery.

So one of the kids little buddies said Princesses aren't his style and didn't want to rock his sister's hand me downs, so they offered it up to A, and she is excited.

Already has yellow fogs and 10in wide tires.

Just needs a battery. So, naturally instead of spending $75 on a 12v from toys r us, I'm gonna spend $75 on a 12v and a 6v to convert this thing to 18v and an LED Headlight/Taillight kit from the internet's.

Figured some others here have converted their kids, so any advice would be welcome.

Plus, given the amount of kids we now have among the MM Alum someone will obviously want to do this to theirs as well. Thought I'd document it here.

LED light kits: http://www.mltoys.com/Power-Wheels-Light...-s/109.htm

Batteries:
12v 12mah and 6v 12mah expert power units from Amazon

I got my lift installed too.

161k Miles, needs an exhaust manifold, rear quarter panel has a small dent (in picture below). 4wd works, factory tow package, newer tires, newer brakes, new calipers, runs well. $3500 as it sits, price will go up as I fix it up / clean it up.

  Porsche tools help
Posted by: Pinegaaj - 11-30-2017, 11:14 AM - Forum: Technical Discussion - Replies (14)

Hey guys, I was told to ask yall for help getting some tools for my 944. If you somehow have the tools or know someone who might be willing to help out, I'll pay for shipping and whatever. It would really be a huge help. The water pump isn't necessary bad; however, I've been told to go ahead and replace it if I am replacing the belts and everything since the old water pump would go bad as a result of the new (proper amount of) force on it.

Specifically, I'd need these tools to be able to replace the water pump on the 944:
P9200-Porsche Balance Shaft Locking Tool
P9206-Porsche 944 Flywheel Lock

I've checked with MAAP. They had all three tools that I needed; however, they sold a bunch of stuff to some Swedish company and don't have these two anymore.

I know someone will say it... I'll do a forum post on the 944s and Kawasaki eventually...

  83 Honda Nighthawk 650
Posted by: EclipseTurbno93 - 11-29-2017, 11:06 PM - Forum: Member's Projects - Replies (6)

So I sold my 250 for a nice, healthy sum and decided to move up to something bigger. I had a fairly short list of things I wanted (air cooled, 500 or bigger, in mostly running condition). I was gravitating towards older Honda's when this one kind of dropped into my lap from someone originally looking to trade for the 250.

When I went to go look we found it had a pretty serious fuel leak, but ran great and was rideable. After a few days of thinking and going to look at a completely junk 84, I offered him $600 which he accepted.

These bikes are pretty cool, sort of ahead of their time in many ways. They were designed to be "maintenance free" and has self adjusting valves and shaft drive. It also comes with a six speed, adjustable anti-dive on the front forks, and lcd fuel and gear displays. Also, I get a tach now which is a nice upgrade. This ones also got an aftermarket exhaust and it sounds great.

Oh and I almost forgot the most important thing of all: It has flames!!

Also I have a full rear drum brake set for a 2008 Corolla (shoes, rotors, hardware kits) if someone needs it.

Otherwise it all goes in the trunk when the Corolla sells.

  New daily/future project - 91 SE Miata
Posted by: balactm - 11-22-2017, 08:36 PM - Forum: Member's Projects - Replies (31)

I believe this is my first post in almost 7 years?

Anyways, this is Phillis.

Specs: 1991 Special Edition Miata  #60 of 4000, 78,600 original miles

Backstory:

This is not my dream car. I've been driving mostly FWD honda's for a significant portion of my life. I'd finally gotten into a groove at work, where finances were starting to get squared away, and I was ready for a change. I wanted something that was more fun, not FWD, hopefully faster, and generally nicer (i.e. not a quarter million miles worth of hard use).

About 2 weeks before buying this car (couple weeks before thanksgiving), I was approved for a loan for a skyline gtr (!!!). Literally 2 days after getting the approval, the furnace and heat pump stopped working in our house. Ever since buying our house, I knew this day was going to come, and I knew that once it came, I was going to get rid of the furnace all together (only gas appliance at our house), and go all electric. To make this change even more efficient, we also scheduled for the crawl space to be completely spray-foamed, including the duct work. So, A signifcant portion of the money I had set aside for the skyline, went to our house...again.

Now being back in a tight spot, financially, I had to give up the skyline (so close!). I could have gone for a gts-t, but in my mind, if I'm buying a skyline, it must be a gtr. I've been intrigued with miatas, and figured why not take the plunge, and do what everyone has told me, and I bought one.

For now, check fluids and hoses and stay up on routine maintenance. Roll bar, summer wheels, maybe hard top.

In the future...megasquirt 3 and try to squeeze as much as possible out of the 1.6 before adding go fast parts turbo and suspension.
