Journey to (Demolition) Derby UPDATE 8/8/16
Posted by: Ianumunro - 06-11-2016, 09:21 PM - Forum: Member's Projects - Replies (11)

UPDATE 8/8/16: Hey everyone. Most of the interior/exterior trim is disposed of. The car starts with the new alternator but sounds awful. Here’s a video. https://youtu.be/E4bar8kn-n4

So I am going to need help. A fair amount of it. I do not have the tools to cut holes in the hood/trunk to fasten them down. This will also need to be done to attach my number (9) to the top of the car. I have no idea how to remove windows/windshields. The last thing that really needs to be done after those is to fasten some sort of chain or fence or bar across the windshield.

Painting the car will be easy. But I need to do it soon. I’m naming the car CORK and will paint it tan with little black spots. I also plan to paint graphics for MadisonMotorsports and WXJM.

I doubt chaining the doors will be hard. But I’ll need to contact some metal shops to buy them and the windows/windshield will need to be removed first.

I still will need to borrow a helmet and a neckbrace if anyone could let me.

UPDATE 6/15/16: So I have figured out exactly what my plan is. I will be selling the Pontiac on craigslist for parts. The Mercury will now be my derby car. http://www.shencofair.com/PDF/2016/fair ... d-Regs.pdf
I will be competing Tuesday, August 30 2016.
I don't know where to begin with this list though.
Any ideas?
The alternator on the Mercury is bad so I suppose thats where I start.

Hey everyone, so I am going to enter the Shenandoah County Fair Demo Derby compact 4-cyl competition on August 29.
Here are the guidelines.
Surprisingly lax.
http://www.shencofair.com/PDF/2016/fair/...d-Regs.pdf
I'm not using the Saab. Though I do have to do some internal engine work on it, that is backburner stuff.
So what will I be derby-ing?
My friend Travis gave me his unhappy-but-will-turn-over 1996 Pontiac Sunfire GT. DOHC and manual! Jackpot!
However, it doesn't enjoy driving. It currently pisses oil out of the top, looks like an O-ring. Been busy, but gotta sort that out. It also gives out suddenly without warning. I have got to get it to the point that I believe it will run for the 20 minutes I need it in the derby. Its currently on that jack because that wheel is practically fully deflated due to sitting for at least 4 months and a slow leak, in inverse order.
Another side project is that a girl down my street had a 1996 (Why does that model year haunt me?) Mercury Mystique that had it's alternators frequently eaten by the alternator. Been there done that so now I plan to flip that. I bought it from her for 100$ cash. Popped a new battery in it and boom, ran like a dream. So if you're looking for a mystique....
But back to the derby car, I'll start trying to frequently update this thread to keep you all in the loop. Cause most likely all I need your know how to get to crashing.
P.S. Anybody got a free helmet on the night of August 29?

  Megan the Merlot M edition

We should have known after my first BMW, I would have to buy an M car!

Oh... it's a Miata. After getting back from looking at very busted Miatas, Zach stopped by my house to grab my cooler and mentioned some car he saw way outside of town on 11 at a small dealership. We went to look and lo and behold, it was an immaculate M edition.

107,000 miles
All leather
Torsen LSD
All power everything
10/10 interior and exterior
All new belts, radiator, tb/wp, seals, and hoses within last 10000 miles with reciepts

Everything works except the power antenna, a small tear in the rear window and a wobbly idle. Also missing 2 bbs wheel center caps

The best part is that I even talked him down on the already low price. He must not have known what M editions were worth since it was a truck dealership. I'm very excited.

  FS: 2001 Miata, 6 Speed, 125K miles

Figure I'll give this a shot.

My Miata has been an interesting car. This was Miata numero 6 or 7, and my first NB. Runs and drives fineish, and in pretty good cosmetic condition all things considering. Wheels are painted the same black as the car. Plastidip in the picture.

The pluses:

  • New inspection
New timing belt and water pump
    New battery
Miscellaneous new stuff that I can't remember while this drunk
    No rust
    New paint (see negatives)
    6 Speed!

The negatives:
  • CEL is on for over-retarded cam. Came on after the timing belt change. I've taken it apart three or four times, and it is absolutely in time. Runs fine through the RPM range, sometimes will stall when coming to a stop. Code disappears when VVT solenoid is unplugged.
Front right caliper drags, creates a rotational squeak.
Throwout bearing starting to make noise.
    No tires match.
New paint... on the exterior surfaces. Engine bay, trunk, door panels behind cards, etc. are still green.
Miscellaneous annoying shit that I can't remember while this drunk

Honestly, I'm tired of dealing with it, and I have the money for something newer/faster/not broken. I'll be a lot more up-front and less "oh, it's not really a big deal" with MMers than I would be with some asshat on Craigslist, so ask any questions you may have. Really, just looking for offers. I don't have a specific number in mind.

I only have one picture at the moment, but I can provide more upon request.

Bad Idea #144: 12 Year Auto Loans
Posted by: G.Irish - 06-03-2016, 10:45 AM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (17)

I don't know how I stumbled onto this (probably while I was doing pointless supercar browsing) but I found a company that offers 12 year auto financing for buying supercars and classics. So for that $180k NSX I specced out it would be...$1756 a month. Hmm, still outrageous but better than $3479/month for a 5 year loan.

http://www.woodsidecredit.com/exotic-car-loans/

http://www.woodsidecredit.com/faq/

Crazy to think there's a company that takes on risk like this but I guess if you've got money and you want to keep more of your assets liquid you might do something like this. Might also work well on the rare, high-demand cars that either don't depreciate or actually appreciate in the short term like a 458 Speciale, GT3RS, 911R, or 675LT.

Maybe if I was more financially irresponsible and had a bigger boner for supercars I would seriously think about something stupid like this for NSX or 458 but even then I don't think I could do it. One accident and you'd be more underwater than the Titanic.

FS: Kenwood DNX-572BH Navigation Receiver - Nearly New
Posted by: Jake - 06-02-2016, 08:54 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (4)

I installed this head unit when I got my truck in January, and promptly found a deal on an Alpine with a way bigger screen. So, the Kenwood is up for sale.

Kenwood DNX-572BH

  • Garmin navigation
  • Bluetooth - phone calls and audio streaming
  • HD Radio
  • CD player
  • Backup camera supported (any camera with RCA will work)
  • Dual-zone A/V output for rear-seat video
  • iDatalink Maestro compatible - really cool interface
  • 22W RMS / 50W peak

I had it hooked up using the above-mentioned iDatalink Maestro. You can use a cheaper adapter to interface between the vehicle and the head unit, but the Maestro will give you 100% integration between Sync and the Kenwood unit (so you don't have to run a microphone for phone calls!). It also gives you on-screen access to live tire pressures, any stored OBD-II fault codes, and customizable gauges for live data. Very slick.

Absolutely zero problems with this unit. Screen is bright with no dead pixels or scratches. Bluetooth connects reliably. Navigation is excellent thanks to Garmin. The physical buttons can be set to illuminate in whatever color you like, and yes, you can make them match Ford's "ice blue" button backlighting for consistency.

$600 OBO. A brand-new version of this model retails for $700.

You will receive the head unit, microphone, Kenwood wiring harness, and GPS antenna. I'm 90% sure I have the original box and manuals but will have to check.

What in the world should I buy?
Posted by: RhyminSimon27 - 05-31-2016, 11:38 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (53)

Hey everyone, Simon here, now a new AluMMni I guess. For those of you that never met me or don't remember me, I've been dailying an RSX for the past several years, and now I'm looking to change that. I don't hate myself enough to drive a rebadged honda with a fart can and shitty halos for the rest of my life. Anyway, I've been browsing around for the past couple months and still haven't found anything that really strikes my fancy, so I figured I'd open the floor to suggestions if anyone wants to contribute.

Requirements:
- Budget: 15-18k, but closer to 15 would be preferable
- Mileage: >70k, preferably >60k
- At least moderately comfortable over long distance drives
- Automatic (I have to drive in manhattan a decent amount, so shush)
- The newer and plusher the better
- Enough power to have a bit of fun with.
- Sedan body style preferred, coupe and others considered. No SUVs.
- AWD would be ideal, but that's proven a challenge, so RWD works or even FWD
- Lastly, factory HID projector headlights are a big plus since I have astigmatism, driving at night can be nerve wracking even with HIDs.
- Oh and I don't always have the time/tools/knowledge to repair vehicles myself, so reliability is appreciated; This thing is gonna have to last me at least a few years.

That's about it honestly. Thanks in advance!

  2007 Audi A4 Quattro - 101K Miles
Posted by: lxpeery - 05-29-2016, 06:19 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (3)

2007 Audi A4
2.0T, auto trans
New inspection
Accident free, 2 owner
Factory navigation system
Power everything, leather everything.

Bought this as a flip, so in all fairness, I can't make any promises about the previous ownership. In great condition though, runs and drives strong. Surprisingly quick, and even for an automatic, it's fun to drive. Would make a great daily for someone who doesn't want a stick. New inspection, almost new tires, great condition inside and out.

Ask any questions that you may have and I'll do my best to answer them. Asking $7,500.

WTB: seats and harnesses for racekur
Posted by: Paul_Easterbrooks - 05-27-2016, 12:49 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (9)

Well, it's about that time I get some safety things. After putting DTC-60s on the vette, the car brakes hard enough to push the seat backs forward under heavy load and the speeds are just too high for regular stock seats. I'm looking for two seats and brackets as well as 5 or 6 point harnesses. I'm going to be putting in a cage over the summer so I'm planning on installing seats at the same time.
