Journey to (Demolition) Derby UPDATE 8/8/16 - Ianumunro - 06-11-2016

UPDATE 8/8/16: Hey everyone. Most of the interior/exterior trim is disposed of. The car starts with the new alternator but sounds awful. Here’s a video. https://youtu.be/E4bar8kn-n4

So I am going to need help. A fair amount of it. I do not have the tools to cut holes in the hood/trunk to fasten them down. This will also need to be done to attach my number (9) to the top of the car. I have no idea how to remove windows/windshields. The last thing that really needs to be done after those is to fasten some sort of chain or fence or bar across the windshield.

Painting the car will be easy. But I need to do it soon. I’m naming the car CORK and will paint it tan with little black spots. I also plan to paint graphics for MadisonMotorsports and WXJM.

I doubt chaining the doors will be hard. But I’ll need to contact some metal shops to buy them and the windows/windshield will need to be removed first.

I still will need to borrow a helmet and a neckbrace if anyone could let me.

UPDATE 6/15/16: So I have figured out exactly what my plan is. I will be selling the Pontiac on craigslist for parts. The Mercury will now be my derby car. http://www.shencofair.com/PDF/2016/fair ... d-Regs.pdf
I will be competing Tuesday, August 30 2016.
I don't know where to begin with this list though.
Any ideas?
The alternator on the Mercury is bad so I suppose thats where I start.

Hey everyone, so I am going to enter the Shenandoah County Fair Demo Derby compact 4-cyl competition on August 29.
Here are the guidelines.
Surprisingly lax.

I'm not using the Saab. Though I do have to do some internal engine work on it, that is backburner stuff.
So what will I be derby-ing?
My friend Travis gave me his unhappy-but-will-turn-over 1996 Pontiac Sunfire GT. DOHC and manual! Jackpot!
However, it doesn't enjoy driving. It currently pisses oil out of the top, looks like an O-ring. Been busy, but gotta sort that out. It also gives out suddenly without warning. I have got to get it to the point that I believe it will run for the 20 minutes I need it in the derby. Its currently on that jack because that wheel is practically fully deflated due to sitting for at least 4 months and a slow leak, in inverse order.

Another side project is that a girl down my street had a 1996 (Why does that model year haunt me?) Mercury Mystique that had it's alternators frequently eaten by the alternator. Been there done that so now I plan to flip that. I bought it from her for 100$ cash. Popped a new battery in it and boom, ran like a dream. So if you're looking for a mystique....

But back to the derby car, I'll start trying to frequently update this thread to keep you all in the loop. Cause most likely all I need your know how to get to crashing.
P.S. Anybody got a free helmet on the night of August 29?

hahaa awesome man. This is always the highlight for Landon and I (well, second to the amazing people watching the fair offers) We'll be there to cheer you on.

I wonder how many cars they end up with that aren't worth the price for someone to tow home?

You're doin' God's work, son.

I'd guess the sudden stalling issue is related to a vacuum leak, or at least that's where I'd start looking first.
