  Let's play a game

Since I can't imagine a better troll than Dr. Goodspeed's recent rx-7, I figured I'd try something a bit different.

I already bought and picked up a vehicle. I know, I know, go get your pitchforks for not having an 8 page thread on what to get. Now you guys have to guess what it was a la 20 questions style.

Rules:
1. We'll start it live at 9a on Friday, please no questions until then.
2. First to correctly guess the year, make & model in a single post is the winner.
3. I can only answer with yes/no.
4. You may ask unlimited questions, but only one per post.
5. You may only guess at the answer one time, if incorrect you may not guess again and are ineligible for winning the grand prize.
6. I hold the right of refusal to answer any question, or to change the rules as we go to account for inadvertent plot holes.
7. Read the rules, Brandon.

Prizes: I'll figure something out for the winner and maybe some consolation prizes for clever questions.

Examples:
"does it have 2 doors" or will it hold x people" will get a response.

"Is it a [manufacturer]" or "was it made in [decade]" won't.

  FS: 2011 F150 FX4
Posted by: Jake - 09-20-2017, 10:04 AM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (6)

I picked up something new and it's time to sell my F150. It's been a bad-weather daily and tow pig for me, not daily driven unless there was a need for Truck Stuff.

Notable Stuff:

  • 5.0L Coyote V8
  • 72k Miles
  • SuperCrew cab - backseat leg room that rivals limos, really
  • 5.5' bed with "Access" soft bed cover and LineX spray-in liner
  • FX4 trim - includes skid plates, unique 20" wheels, 4x4, all-weather floormats and rear diff locker
  • 3.73 rear end
  • Extended range 36 gallon fuel tank
  • Factory "max tow" package with OEM trailer brake controller - rated to 9300 lbs, I believe
Upgrades:
  • Alpine W957HD head unit with navigation, Bluetooth streaming, USB, and OBD-II live data
  • Factory backup camera in tailgate using thicker Ford logo
  • Hawk LTS brake pads (6k miles of use)
Other than the brakes I put on it, the truck has required zero work beyond oil changes. I replaced spark plugs at 60k miles (with OEM Motorcraft) per the recommendation of Kevin at FlimFlamSpeed. Ford suggests a 100k interval that is a bit long. I had the transmission fluid changed (drain and fill) at 65k for peace of mind due to the towing I do.

It's on a set of Bridgestone Dueler H/L tires that have worn very well over the last 25k miles - they were new when I bought the truck - and still have a ton of life left. I have two keys for it.

The title is held by PenFed and we will meet there to exchange funds when the time comes.

$23k OBO - located in Alexandria, VA. I have already purchased the replacement so am looking to move this fast. Happy to provide more photos upon request.

As many of you know my luck with cars running has be pretty poor and the mini has lived up to reputation. However, I'm going to continue with the full track ready, Miata destroyer plan.

The mod list right now is: resonator delete, fortune 500 coil overs, adjustable end links, everything that has to do with coolant is either new or upgraded, and k&n panel filter.

Next summer mod plans: Snead4speed aero kit, O.Z. Ultra leggera w/ federal 595srr, cat delete and cob access port, or any other suggestions. Each comma separates one thing per summer b/c they are around 1500, excluding the cob and cat delete.

Time for a FWD champion! Tongue

  FS: Garage/Trailer/Dorm Fridge $40
Posted by: JustinG - 09-18-2017, 09:22 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (8)

Got a full size freezer/fridge for the garage so this needs to go.

Keeps my beer at a cold 38 degrees without issue, can go colder, but will freeze the beer. Has a small freezer section perfect for ice packs or Everclear.

$40, juice boxes and beer do not convey, but stickers do. Can include wooden platform it is sitting on if you want it.

Pickup in RVA

Can deliver to VIR October, or JMU on a home game weekend.

  Top Speed Run
Posted by: GTBrandon - 09-18-2017, 02:04 PM - Forum: Campus Events - Replies (9)

Anyone else interested in doing an event with a top speed portion? Now that I actually have the proper speed rating on my tires and a decent alignment, I'd love to see what I can get it up to on a runway. The only events I've seen cost around $200 and that doesn't seem worth it to me, but curious to know if others would be interested or if they know of something like this.

I'd like to see the MMoped there for sure Big Grin

  2010 Range Rover Supercharged
Posted by: Jake - 09-18-2017, 10:23 AM - Forum: Member's Projects - Replies (139)

My grand plans to move into the District require downsizing to just one street car. Obviously, the convertible needs to go. I thought about keeping the F150, but it's just tall and long enough to be annoying in city driving - especially for underground parking, which will be the parking situation wherever I end up living.

So, back to a bigish SUV. I wanted something "nice," that would tow well but also be good for road trips and errands and such. My shopping list and thoughts:

  • Porsche Cayenne GTS (first gen) - cramped inside, felt kind of slow, people paid how much for this when it was new?
  • Audi Q7 - the plumbing aisle at Home Depot is more interesting to look at than this, interior feels ooold
  • VW Touareg (first gen) - tough to find one with a V8, similar cramped interior as the Cayenne
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee (2013+) - hard, uncomfortable seats and trim already falling off the one I drove with just 15k miles
  • BMW X5 (E70, 2011-2013) - the V8s all go kaboom and the diesels eat every piece of emissions equipment repeatedly, requires aftermarket hitch to tow as much as the others
  • Dodge Durango (the newish one) - it's a stretched JGC, didn't even drive one as the looks kind of put me off
The X5 was at the top of my list, because if you get one that's running right, they are sublime to drive. But you also see a lot of dealership for-sale ads with the CEL lit and I heard a ton of horror stories that basically amounted to "unless you're married to the idea of one, don't do it." Most of the diesels also came very sparsely equipped, which made it impossible to find one with the nicer sport seats and more stylish wheels.

I briefly considered an Expedition, but figured at that point I might as well just keep the F150 as it's close in size.

Several friends own or have owned Land Rovers, so I started doing some research there. The LR4 and full-size Range Rover share the same 114" wheelbase, which is long enough to tow with. Although the L322 Range Rover was released in 2003 under BMW's ownership of the company, it got revamped in 2006 when BMW got out and Ford took ownership. Ford then spun off their luxury brands around 2008, and Tata Motors took over both Jaguar and Land Rover.

2010 saw the introduction of the Jaguar 5.0L V8 in the LR4 and RR, and it's proven to be pretty reliable. The Range Rovers in general became more reliable starting in the Ford era, according to some friends who either sell them or work on them for a living. I took a few test drives and each one further cemented the idea that a Range Rover was somehow the best idea.

I must have driven about eight naturally-aspirated 2010-2012s, all at small-time dealerships that specialize in auction cars. None of them were worth buying. Oh, and I only wanted gray or blue paint because I'm picky, dammit. I knew Maserati of Arlington had a blue one on their lot, but the miles were a bit higher than I was initially shopping.

On Friday, I figured "what the hell, it's on the way home" and stopped in. It was wearing a fresh set of Michelins and had been traded in by a local owner on a Levante. The Carfax listed a lot of the maintenance that had been performed and it has been kept up pretty well. And the price was right.

They cleaned it up and I brought it home Saturday afternoon. It's a 2010 with 94k miles (lots of FS ads had them far into the 150k range, so I feel good about longevity). Buckingham Blue paint with tan seats, blue piping, blue carpets and cherry wood trim. It is a Lux package, which adds air-conditioned seats, a wood steering wheel, a 720 watt Logic7 sound system, and who-knows-what other options. It has the same shifter and sunroof controls as an E38 BMW and the radiator hoses and oil filter cap are stamped with "FoMoCo."

And it's supercharged. Sweet Jesus it is fast. Land Rover rated it at 510 hp but allegedly they dyno a bit high. Regardless, it is plenty punchy.

I've ordered a trailer brake controller and the associated wiring - it's all plug-and-play - and should have it all wired up to tow in the next few days.

Looking forward to seeing how it treats me. So far I have made it about 50 miles with no issues.

My name is Colin and I am a freshman geology major from Alexandria, VA. I became interested with cars at a young age, due to my uncle and grandfather both having a passion for automobiles and taking me to car shows. Currently, I do not own a car, as I am lacking cash, but I'm working on that. I don't really have an idea of what I would want to buy, so suggestions are welcome. I am looking forward to what MM has to offer and perhaps learning more about working on cars.

  New forum software is live!
Posted by: Jake - 09-14-2017, 10:28 PM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (62)

Our installation of phpBB dated back to my sophomore year at JMU, which was... a while ago. It was time for an upgrade. So, here we are on myBB now.

There will be some bumps in the road as we work on fully migrating to the new software. Please leave feedback here and I/others can address it. I'll be working on getting user ranks back. Avatars should be able to be uploaded to the site now (!).

The forums natively support video embeds from several sources, but you will have to go back and update old video links unless I can figure out a mass query to run that updates 'em all. Give me a bit on that, or if someone else is good with queries, hit me up.

Love and this-feels-a-lot-like-my-day-job,

Jake
