Project : Purple Princess Pontiac

So we were offered a garage kept Pontiac solstice for free 99 PO just said it needs a new battery.

So one of the kids little buddies said Princesses aren't his style and didn't want to rock his sister's hand me downs, so they offered it up to A, and she is excited.

Already has yellow fogs and 10in wide tires.

Just needs a battery. So, naturally instead of spending $75 on a 12v from toys r us, I'm gonna spend $75 on a 12v and a 6v to convert this thing to 18v and an LED Headlight/Taillight kit from the internet's.

Figured some others here have converted their kids, so any advice would be welcome.

Plus, given the amount of kids we now have among the MM Alum someone will obviously want to do this to theirs as well. Thought I'd document it here.

LED light kits: http://www.mltoys.com/Power-Wheels-Light...-s/109.htm

Batteries:
12v 12mah and 6v 12mah expert power units from Amazon

I got my lift installed too.

You're about two posts away from your kid having a car cooler than yours.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

If you up the power on these things, you better start looking for other cars on Craigslist so you can scavenge the gears and and motors, haha.

I used to blow through these things as a kid.

From what I've read 18v is the max you wanna do if you don't wanna destroy motors every 15min.

A pair of upgraded motors and metal gears would set me back about $75.

Just do the metal gears and up the voltage until she can literally melt those plastic tires with sick burnies.

Oh man, this reminds me I should finish up the kids c7 some day.
Harbor freight has rubber tires can be convinced to fit on the front, it'll help tremendously with the understeer and make donuts so much more gratifying. If you rubberize the back you can probably get some sick wheelies out of it.

Also, don't shell out for the $30 or whatever for the quick chargers. I think the base charger is like .5 amp and the qc 2 or 3 amps. I just cut the adapter off and added a couple of terminals for my battery charger and ran that at 2 amps.

I'm sure you've already found it, but http://www.modifiedpowerwheels.com/forum/ is some excellent nighttime reading.

and I'll give it a week until you're shopping variable speed throttle from a drill switch

obviously you need to look into a double-diagonal PVC rollhoop with this kind of upgraded power...(trackday,bro)

metal gears ftw. is the plastic gear a tight interference fit on the shaft or does it have a set screw? just from the experience of fixing up old "department store tier" RC Cars with plastic gears...the plastic either strips teeth or the entire gear will spin on the shaft once the interference fit gets loosened by shock loads. with metal gears i JB weld them to the shaft, with plastic i drill through the base of the gear and the shaft and pin the assembly together with a paperclip (in your case maybe you'd use wire coat hanger) that passes the entire way through and the ends get bent to keep the pin in place.

Lights and new batteries should be here Wednesday, so spent a little bit taking stuff apart in preparation for running the lights.

Headlights already have a spot to mount a light.

Taillights have cutouts as well. I may do a parking light along with a brake light.
[Image: 5141e9cabf2b4b478c3437f47a497559.jpg][Image: e45d788d7e569c869bbbfc4da70265e7.jpg][Image: 43a87dad92838305db030759e184c253.jpg]

Pulled front and rear bumpers. I'll mount lights in the fogs and reverse lights.

Finally found a vehicle worthy enough for the Sparkly Pink MM sticker I have been holding onto.

Headlights, foglights, and parking lights will be wired to a switch. Brake and reverse will be wired to the pedal/speed selector to activate when they should.

Batteries came a day early, so we had her maiden voyage. Kid was somewhat shocked at the speed, but then proceeded to do burnouts and top speed runs.

I was able to utilize the existing battery holder. This helped because it looks cleaner and already has an integrated 40amp fuse which is necessary even at 12volts.

I modified the wiring in order to run the 12v and 6v batteries in series giving 18v.

Thought I had some 10AWG black wire but didn't, so just used some black heat shrink to mark my - wire coming from the 12v to the 6v battery.

I added some connectors to create a loop in order to just utilize the 12v battery if we wanted.

Used some styrofoam from the battery packaging to help secure the 6volt battery.

So.....Had would be more appropriate.

I forgot about the radio, so when I flipped the switch, I smelled the lovely smell of burning electronics and saw a small puff. Quickly turned it off and disconnected the battery to investigate. Pulled the radio apart and found this.

TOO MUCH JUICE, I forgot about downing the voltage. A voltage regulator to step it down from 18v to 12v is coming with the Lights in order to keep them from frying.

But hey, she had fun...

Videos on my FB and IG.

Lights should be here tomorrow, updates coming after.
