Yeah I originally considered taking a job in NoVa as the backup option since there'd be more options paying well but housing killed that idea kinda quick. Was looking at around $750-1000/month just for a semi-decent room to crash in during the week. Richmond is more along the lines of $400-500. As much as I'd like to stay in NoVa, Capital one in Richmond seems to pay pretty well according to Glassdoor anyways.
 
Push comes to shove I might take ya'll up on that though. Ultimately I'm going to try and go with whoever lets me stay remote the most but come May I'm going to stop being picky.

Not everything in an interview has to map directly to your daily responsibilities.  

Either way,  an hour on Kahn Academy (not to be confused with Kaan Academy) would have prepped you for the interview.  Seems silly to me to turn down a promising opportunity over an hour's time investment.

More than that. More travel than I care for with a baby coming in a few months. Recruiter couldn't tell me anything about 1st year earnings or how they divide their territories or where the travel might be. Spent the first 30 minutes of the call telling me about the company and only a few minutes asking about me and what my current role is. I'm not actively job hunting, just seeing what's out there.

He hasn't got back to me yet. I had a "Principal Associate for Talent Acquisition" from Capital One reach out to me on LinkedIn about a 5 minute phone interview so I figured it couldn't hurt. Long story short: it ended abruptly when she asked if I using Java 1.7 or 1.8. I told her the project I was on was still using 1.6 because there was no real reason for us to move to 7 or 8. She said "well we write everything for our project in 1.8, so I'm going reach out to another more front-end oriented team for you". Spoiler: she didn't. And for the record the only new additions to Java 7 and 8 have been mostly quality of life improvements. It's about as hard as going from word 2013 to 2016. I guess I'm "only" 98% qualified to be a Java programmer at Capital One ... so hard pass right?

Not a great start, 2 more days until unemployment. I wanna document this trainwreck because I feel the software world has reached peak inefficiency in regards to job interviews but I'm not really sure how.

Just fyi, the in house recruiters for Cap One are pretty terrible. Cross your fingers you get a 3rd party person filling the role you applied for.

My wife applied for 4-5 roles there prior to her current one. In house recruiters lacked any sort of communication skills or follow through. Her third party recruiter was checking in with her weekly during the process and answered questions she had almost immediately.

When she interviewed for her current role, the in house recruiter didnt even check in with her the week of her final panel interviews. She had to reach out to the hiring manager to confirm the info.


Sadly during my job searches this seems par for the course regardless of employer

Lol..that's literally one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of. I am not a full time java programmer, but I think one of the only things I can imagine anyone not getting are lambda expressions. If you've done any javascript at all you've probably run into them. You should just say yes when people ask you dumb shit like that. Unless a company is doing some kind of bleeding edge highly optimized shit, versions of a language shouldn't matter at all. You'll figure out everything the average person needs to know in two weeks. Get through to an interview with an actual developer.

That seems dumb if it is just a new version as you describe with the same basic functions. But you kind of shot yourself in the foot on this one. Just say yes and learn as you go. If it's just a "refresh" update you should have no problem.

I can't fault him for being honest. Why would you consider lying if it's not a big deal? I'm sure he had no reason to think him saying "no" would cause any issues at all.

I wouldn't consider that lying. If you know how to use 1.6 and your confident 1.7/.8 is just a refresh and you can still perform in that environment then just roll with it. I realize he didn't think it would be a big deal, but it's important to remember most recruiters don't know shit about the jobs they are filling. Especially technical ones. They are just rolling through a checklist and making sure you are not a serial killer. So if they say can you use XYZ and you say you know WXY they might write you off immediately, when the hiring manager may understand your skillset better.

Update from my front. I'm still applying elsewhere, and I'm starting to open up what kind of role I'm looking for since I guess I don't really know what I think I'll like. I understand development and have the appropriate degree, but I also realize I probably wouldn't miss it if I left the field, or at least moved further from the development side of it. I'm really eyeing some kind of role at VW right now. I think that would be really neat to work my way into the auto industry in any fashion. I have a few applications pending in various places, so if anyone wants to take a look at my resume and give some tips, or suggestions for roles with my skillset, let me know!

The real mistake was talking to someone like that in the first place. The common theme seems to be putting these conversations on rails. She very specifically asked what version of Java my current project was using and not if I knew how to work with 1.8. I didn't think anything of it because like someone else said Lambdas are the only real "new" thing and it's just a shorthand way to do something you already could. They're also a copy of JavaScript arrow functions which I've written 100s of at this point but she didn't bother asking about that.

I don't disagree with you though, I'm starting to think I either need to start stretching the truth or avoid talking about my last job all together.

Taylor, VW sounds cool. I interviewed there to be on the product team for Golf and shut it down when they told me the max salary was like $65k. Seemed like they were looking for someone more junior than I was. Obviously different by department, but I've heard about long hours as well. Curious how it develops for you.

I've found Capital One's hiring process as a whole absolutely terrible. I applied to 4-5 roles there and wouldn't hear anything back for weeks if not months. I'm ok with not getting the role, but sitting on an application that long is pretty shit IMO. It went so far as my family knows the VP of HR and had him push my resume only for him to get back to me 3 months later after a preliminary conversation and saying he would hand my resume off to one of their recruiters. Months later I got a call asking if I was interested in a job when I had already accepted a role with CapTech..

I know Ryan works there and has a positive experience, but in short C1 has a reputation in Richmond as being a complete meat grinder with employees. It's the same experience on the consulting side within CapTech..

They pay 1% MSRP a month for them.  It's part of the comp package.

You have to be very senior to qualify for those. Entry level will get like a Jetta or an A3

So you have to qualify for certain vehicles based on your job title/rank in the company... I was saddened by that a little bit.
