Yammie Brap 180

What we have here is a 1998 Yamaha RT180. Basically, your most run of the mill trail bike. 180cc, 2stroke, oil injection. A long time friend of mine and his brother bought this WAAYY back in high school to ride around the power lines and what-not when we were "kids". Flash forward to today and it was ridden for a while at their river house and then it sat for the last year in the garage. I've always wanted a little trail bike to throw on a hitch carrier on the 4Runner to haul out to the woods when we're camping. The stars aligned and it worked out that I scooped this up for free with the goal being I restore it and bring it to his bachelor party in the woods in October (DEAL).

Initial assessment is what I would expect for an old motorcycle. Strip it down, clean the carb, clean the tank, replace filters/spark plug, check if the tires hold air, and then go ride the snot out of it. The gas tank at first glance was rusty, but when I was able to pull it and take a look on the workbench it surprised me to see that just the "ridge" where it rests on the frame was rusty and that the rest of the tank was pretty much spotless. This could be a good sign that the tank will require a little less work that I was imagining. Any tips on cleaning old tanks would be appreciated! I'll keep a tally of costs here at the top.

Bike cost: Free
  • New fuel line, NGK Spark plug 2x, Fuel filter ($13.89)
  • 2x OEM Yamaha air filter ($21.85)
  • CLR & 2x Carb cleaner ($19.20)
  • Apple Cider Vinegar ($26.51)
  • Starter fluid and 2stroke oil ($13.99)
  • Carb rebuild kit ($21.88)
  • Por-15 Tank sealer ($19.30)
  • Oil Seal & OEM Rear Fender ($58.39)
  • "New Used" OEM ignition coil ($19.99)
  • Sealed gas tank ($120)
Total Cost: $335

After getting it home last night, I've managed to complete the following:

- Clutch cable lubed
- Throttle cable lubed
- Fork sanctions cleaned of spot rust
- Old air filter removed
- Dirt/rust clean up on frame.

The chain/sprocket looks pretty crap and honestly it's like $50 to replace the whole thing. I'll definitely do that, but for the immediate future I want to get it in running condition so for now I'll probably just clean and lube. Then I'll start tackling "longevity" mods.

Part of me wants to turn this into a little tracker build or something. Basically a small headlight, a new flat seat, and fab up a little fender for the rear.

The Sr250's are a real inspiration.

What is there to figure out? You have a truck bed, no?

Pulled the carb last night and cleaned it up. Installed some new fuel hose and filter. It was fairly clean on the inside with a little bit of gunk in the main and pilot jet. The biggest PITA was reassembling the airbox/boot onto the bike and carb. Did a first pass with CLR. A lot of gunk came out, but I need more to fill the whole tank. I'm going to buy some white vinegar and soak this weekend so I can keep and eye on it to rotate. It's kinda that last think between me and attempting to start it.

Step 1: Get a bike carrier for your hitch
Step 2: Take this with you on your camping trips
Step 3: ????
Step 4: Profit

def down for some additional brappage in MM. looks super nice for what you got it for. that would make a super fun knockaround bike for when you get that cabin up on some land!

It's kick-start? I haven't checked for spark yet, but will do when I install the new plug. Wiring for the most part is complete and intact.

I guess I could rig up a temp fuel tank and try and get it started, no?

Yea, I'm really looking forward to ripping this thing on the fireroads out in the GW. I have a feeling this is going to lead to a bigger ADV bike..

Is it new enough that it has electronic ignition parts? May want to test whatever parts are on there to be sure.

It's like a 1995. Only "electronics" I can see is a dummy low oil light. It doesn't have a battery.

Attempted to start last night using a "remote" fuel tank. No Dice. Kicks and kicks and kicks, but won't turnover.

I checked the plug and I am indeed getting spark. Pulled the plug and there was no gas on it. My research tells me that the carb is not filling with fuel if there is no gas in the cylinder? I guess I will need to pull the carb and see if the bowls have fuel in them. I'm going to get some starting fluid and see if it will at least kick-over that way. Worst case scenario I can buy a brand new carb for $16 on Amazon..

Carb gods. Thoughts?

I don't know anything about dirt bikes but the bowls should definitely have your answer. Could be as simple as the float valve being stuck shut. That would keep fuel from filling the bowls no matter how good the supply was.

Most of em have shit reviews. That's why I'm hesitant, but it is $16...

I have regretted almost every cheap chinese re-man part I've ever purchased. Will probably be filled with metal shavings and need a rebuild anyways.
