Project: AWD Turbo Family Hauler (PART DEUX)

Welp as discussed in a previous thread I was on the look out for a Prius replacement that was fun with some utility. Wagon or Truck, I wasn't sure.

Contenders were:

VW Alltrack - Was cheap (thanks diesel gate) but damn was it slow, needed 100 more HP
Honda Ridgeline - awesome truck, but it didn't solve my "I want a fun car" problem
12+ 328xi Touring - Fun with utility

I wanted to stick to a 15+ because apparently vehicles manufactured after 1/1/15 had a revised timing chain, and 12-14 have apparently experienced timing chain issues.

The nationwide search began for a White/Red/Blue 15+ with all the M Sport goodies, (Bumpers, Brakes, Suspension), Driver Assistance Package, Lighting package and Cold Weather package. With 99% of the listings being inaccurate, I was forced to Run the VINs of every car I looked at.

Lighting package filtered out most, then the Msport brakes and suspension filtered out the rest.

Then up pops this in Massachusetts, just the listing and a VIN #, an hour outside of Boston, Wagner BMW of Shrewsbury MA. I ran the VIN, and it checked all the boxes.....except RED. I was really hoping to snag a White one. But then the sales rep, who has been awesome thus far sent me this picture. Along with about 15 more of the car, prior to going through their detail shop.

[Image: LuE-Dz_klpPWMG298DlE9e5UUCT-rwf6V2bPMLEk...00-no?.jpg]

I have always hated red cars, said i'd never own one. But after seeing this, my mind was changed. Added bonus of it having the dark grey M sport wheels and black trim work.

So after back and forth with the sales rep and sales manager, pictures, videos, etc. I decided to go for it.

This has been about a 2 week process, between them getting the car through their intake process, about 36 inches of snow in Massachusetts, and back and forth with questions/pictures.

They have been awesome to deal with, and mentioned that my questions and requests were expected considering my situation. They said they get more outlandish requests from customers who live 3 blocks from the dealership who have no excuse.

Aside from a couple of rock chips the car appears to be in great shape. Single owner, lease vehicle, who picked the car up in Germany.

Details:

So yea, committed to the car, put down a deposit, they overnighted the paperwork, along with a prepaid overnight envelope to return the docs.

They are finalizing everything tomorrow and got me a shipping quote. Still working on logistics to get the car shipped down, but I will hopefully have it next week. Which will be good timing, as the Prius is being picked up on Monday.

So yea, I guess I own a BMW now.

Added bonus, my existing roof bars from the prius also work on the BMW. I found the feet for it on Amazon, through a company called RERACK. I would highly recommend looking them up if you are in the market for bars/feet/etc. They had a great price, and appear to specialize in used equipment. Although mine were in new condition for $45.

Also snagged a bluetooth OBD2 plug. I will be downloading BIMMER CODE, and using that to code in some of the features we are missing in the US, or just werent activated from the factory for some strange reason.

I need to figure out something with the trim. For some reason this car has the brown burl wood, not the M Sport (Aluminum/Blue) trim. So I am probably gonna wrap it with some CF look vinyl or maybe a dark grey brushed aluminum look vinyl.

So sexy. Very nice pick up!

I'm looking very closely at this car type to replace my mk6 gti sometime this fall / winter or early '19. I test drove a sedan this past weekend with the M goodies and it's nice, but I need the wagon.

Congrats!

This was a great pickup man. I agree I'm not usually big on red but it definitely works with those body/booty lines!

It feels like bad luck to post an ownership thread before you actually have the car/keys!

Here's the real question - velcro, tape, or drilling?

Let's hope not.

And screws, it's already drilled.

Also, really interested to hear your experience with BIMMER CODE. We've had our side mirror on reverse change setting three times without us doing anything. There are a few other minor nits I'd like to address, like having the mirrors fold automatically or having the radio turn off when the driver door opens, and it looks like that may one way to fix it.

Reading up on it and it seems comparable, if not better than Carly. Significantly cheaper (OBD2 plug $25, app $35) than Carly. Plus WAYYYY cheaper than remote coding.

I just want it for the simpler coding features. I'll probably never use the "Advanced" mode.

Sweet! I also said I'd never want a red car and, well, you see what happened. It really does work on some vehicles with the right trim and options - the M-Sport goodies absolutely make it work for yours. Can't wait to see it in person!

What’s with all the red car hate? Is it the new green?
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

I dunno, I just never did like red cars. Never liked white cars before either, but that obviously changed.

I've never understood the hate either... I mean, even the hater himself (Evan) loves red.

Nice pickup, look forward to seeing it in person.  I'm with you on the red, not my favorite in general but it suits that wagon well.  That thing is impressively optioned, whats the surround view?

Nice! I always liked red and this looks really good with the gray wheels and blue brakes. And yeah, great options.

I need to look into this bimmer code thingy and see what I can manipulate.

I initially didn't like the "radio stays on for 8 minutes" but it's kind of nice for everyone staying in the car while I fill up, or run in the store or whatever. It goes off immediately when I lock it so I've come to appreciate it.

The BimmerCode app just let's you change hard coded features at the click of a button. Most of it is simple comfort features, not like increasing your boost or anything.

I do think you can enable Sport+ mode if your car didn't have it initially enabled .

Somewhere I saved off a quote from you about never owning a Subaru again, but guess it's gonna stay filed for a bit longer. Congrats on the car! Hope shipping is hassle free for you.

I was in the same red #notmycar camp before the e30 showed up and it's grown on me. This looks really sharp and I would not hesitate to whip it to Costco.

Yeah, I was interested some of comfort / convenience features. Like Chris mentioned, my passenger side mirror has suddenly decided to dip on reverse. I like it, but it's too far to be useful. The kids like to play with the iDrive so it might have been them...

I do have Sport+ and now that you mention it, it would be nice to have an option to just do the chassis settings (like you can do in Sport), then engine/trans settings in Sport+ are reallly aggressive.

It only dips if the driver/passenger "side selector" switch for the mirrors is in one position. I can't remember which one makes it dip vs. stay upright in reverse but flip it to the other side from where you have it now. I think flipped to passenger side makes it dip down.

When it's dipped down, use the mirror controls to adjust the dipped position to your tastes, it should remember them.

Dope, especially in red. Good riddance Prius and welcome to the dark side!

You folks with inconsistent side-mirror-reverse-dipping...you sure it’s not because of the L/R toggle switch for mirror adjustment?  It’ll only dip in reverse if the toggle is on the driver’s side (I think). There’s also a way to make it remember where to dip down to. That’s just assuming that 15 years after the introduced the feature that they got it right.

that car is a find. i think its safe to say that most owners who would choose to pick their car up from Germany are the kind of owner that likes to take care of their car.

the red looks killer. if you, Steve, and RJ all show up at the MM car show you have the potential to make the most patriotic looking BMW wagon section ever.
