Just FYI, I didn't take a good look at the job description, but if that is internal services; it's pretty hard to get promoted quickly and you seem impatient. They changed the model so you have to wait till someone dies/leaves or gets promoted themselves. I have been at my job for 4 years now and not a single person in my sector has left above my level since I have been here... (the gig is pretty fucking cushy, just shit pay compared to what guys on here pretend they make).

Edit: Nevermind, that looks like Deloitte Consulting client side. Be prepared for minimum 50-55hour work weeks and lot's of "firm contribution" work. You can however get promoted quickly doing so and make really good money.

Also, the commute to Rosslyn is pretty fucking abysmal and parking is expensive, take that into account for "pay" unless they put you customer side.

That's fair. Interview practice isn't bad and I'm throwing a wide net. Want to avoid consulting. There just isn't much out there where the commute isn't ass or the pay isn't pathetic.

I don't want to deal with the hours and culture. Maybe some smaller firm, but definitely not big 4 or top 10. Jake seems happy doing what he's doing so maybe a place like that.

However, an internal position at a software company seems more appealing. Maybe I'm off base, there's no way for me to really know.

"Consulting" is a broad brush. Often it means working on real problems/work at a client site, on their projects (like Jake's company) - which can be really fun and rewarding - and you can be much more affected by the client's culture than yore own company but that can also put you out on an island and you have to make your own way any learning/growth/career advancement.

But, do your research and proceed with caution because it can end up like DJ describes, too, a 60 hour week of suit-wearing powerpoint bro-culture and wondering "what the fuck am I doing here". I interviewed with Booz last year and turned down an offer because I didnt like what I was hearing for org structure & learning.... and they offered me a pay cut.

From talking to you though, I think you'd be better served for now looking at a smaller company that's financially healthy that can help you grow quickly and recognize your contributions better. Just my $.02.

Yeah, I can see that. I think at this point the word is just so emotionally charged that it's hard to escape the negative connotation many people have.

Yeah, so Slalom is an interesting one. We're a 6k person company but DC only has ~130 employees right now. They are HUGE on keeping the vibe like a smaller company - everyone got a personalized Christmas card from our office's general manager, and the entire company got a holiday card from the CEO (not personalized, but a pic of his family and such). The president comes to every office's holiday party so he can at least get to know faces. We're pretty strict on 40 hours billable per week, and our culture comes with us to client sites for the most part (flexible hours/location are the big aspects). We're very much not just a staff-augmentation type of place, so everyone works on strategy and/or deliverables on every client, instead of just churning out widgets that the client already knows they need help with.

You don't find your own clients a la Booz, that's what your manager is for. And you can say no assuming there's a better fit coming. Everyone can help with proposals or sales but you don't have to. Lots of autonomy and ways to grow, so long as you don't just dick around all day. If you want to get a certification or go to a conference, there's budget for it.

I truly have nothing bad to say about being here so far, and it's been almost a year. We don't hire entry-level, though, at this point.

This might be an odd request, but I thought I'd do what I could to help out. My dad recently switched from Polycom (Those spaceship phones in the middle of your conference table, face tracking cameras in international conferences, and the main competitor of Cisco) after 25 years to a smaller SaaS company. After 9 months they decided they didn't want to pursue gov contracts and dropped him like a stone, sweet. So I thought I'd ask here if any of you know of positions within your companies that might be suited for him. He managed contracts with DoD, FCC, CDC, VA, HHS, etc for video conferencing suites. Basically everything from the hardware and back-end servers to software services with Microsoft and with internal support services from Polycom. Obviously, this was his career, and not mine so there's a lot I don't know, but I figured I'd try and help him find another job.

Edit: By the way, thanks for all the tips on my internship this summer with Booz!

Man this shutdown has put my contract in a really weird place. (un)Fortunately they switched our newest maintenance contract to a fixed-price contract a couple months ago. Probably so they could have more control over everything and justify forcing us to justify every hour. But now they're shutdown and we're still technically supporting them. Of course they didn't really think ahead and give us any work to do while they're out...

The good news is we also kicked off a tech refresh recently. They didn't put me on that contract so I'm just billing the government to learn modern javascript, React/Angular and Node since I'll need it once that's done anyways. This stuff feels like child's play compared to all the old JEE stuff I'm used to. "You know that thing that used to take a dozen files, hours of config and hundreds of lines of code to do? We're just gonna do it in a js file or 2 with 50 lines of code because it's 2019 and not 2009"

No wonder JEE job postings are buried under a sea of "full stack" Javascript postings.

Well management came in today, and told everyone that we are closing the bigger part of the plant and moving the production to Elizabethtown. They are meeting with everyone individually to tell them what their new jobs will be, or what their severance package will be. I've been retained. But the real question is for how long. My job description will be changing for sure, and part of me is glad, and part of me isn't. So I'm for sure looking for a new job. If anybody knows of any kind of administrative type work here in the valley, I'd appreciate a nod my way. Got a lead on something already but who knows. I'd like to have options.
