I'm just curious, how did you find yourself in an interview without a suit and tie?

I decided not to wear one. I wore a sport coat and and a nice shirt. If some place won't hire me because of not wearing a tie, I don't want to work there. I'm not a finance major. If it's a job I'm dying to get, I'll wear what's appropriate, but at this point I have too many interview offers to take.

I appreciate the heads up, everyone. I was just wanted to see what I got offered from there. Like I said, I'm not too keen on consulting anyway.

I would recommend wearing a suit and tie to every interview. You never know what might happen or what you may like when you think you wouldn't. Everyone else is wearing suits. When I was interviewing candidates at my last job and they didn't wear a suit it definitely put them towards the bottom of the list.

Just my opinion but I don't care what the job is I want to represent myself the best I can and make the best possible impression.

In seriousness, I would echo what Jon said. You only get one chance to have a first impression and like it or not, you will be judged by it. Always put your best foot forward in your professional life. You may get hired somewhere even if you don't wear a suit to an interview but you also might miss an awesome opportunity because the recruiter or hiring manager was put off by the fact that you didn't think it was necessary to show them your level of professionalism.

It depends where you are and what kind of job you're applying for. In the programmer type jobs I've interviewed for up to this point, you would be way overdressed if you wore a suit and tie to an interview. The most anyone interviewing me has ever been dressed up is a dress shirt + tie. The least was jeans flip flops and a Hawaiian shirt.

In the DMV area I'm sure things are different, but like you said, I wouldn't ever consider working for a company where a suit/tie was expected.

I wore a suit to one interview and the interviewer was wearing Jeans and a polo, and since then, I haven't donned the tie again. One company even told me NOT to wear a suit. CS majors wear shorts and flip flops, CIS majors are more professional because we at least wear a Hawaiian shirt to match.

I've shown up at very casual places in a full blown interview suit and stuck out like sore thumb/been teased for it.

That being said, I still always air on the side of being over-dressed for an interview. If I know for a fact that every employee comes to work in torn cargo shorts and flip-flops at a particular place, I'd probably scale it back to a button up and/or sweater and khakis/slacks. If I don't know, or if the places requires business-casual or higher of its employees, then I'm definitely suiting up.

Exactly, at worst you are given some gentle teasing. I would always rather err on the side of being over prepared/over dressed. Unless you are specifically told not to wear one I would always do so. There's no real negative.

Here's the thing about the tie. Don't think of it as, "I don't wanna work for a company that wouldn't hire me because I didn't have a tie on." Sure there are a few where no-tie = hard veto, but that's not the norm for hiring college grads. Instead, consider that there are many applicants out there with the same degree and as much or more experience as you. If it comes down to you versus another guy with the same degree, same skills, and did just as well in the interview, the company is gonna have to look for something else to be the tiebreaker. That might be, "Well, candidate A dressed more professionally and might be better in front of the customer..." and that's it.

If you're doing something competitive, why leave anything on the table if you can help it? I mean if it's that important to you to not wear a tie, then fine, but if you have ties why not wear 'em?

I'm with Taylor - GTFO with your ties. If I lose a job because of a TIE-breaker, then I'm clearly not the best person for the job.

Then again, my parents told me I'd never be successful if I wasn't willing to wear a tie. I've spent the 15 years working hard to prove them wrong. :lol:

Or just get your head out of your ass and be an adult and wear a suit to an interview. Walk in there and own it. It's honestly, really not that hard to do. Welcome to being an adult where we just sometimes have to do things we don't really want to do but are expected to.

A bit harsh, Cabell. Being an adult also means making my own decisions. I'll get a job, don't worry, and I'm going to make boat loads of money and do a great job. I've worked hard and succeeded and I'll continue to do so. Not all of us have to be cookie cutter business people and work at a consulting firm and wear a suit.

For my on site interview, you know what I did? I asked the recruiter what to wear. My head isn't in my ass. I don't want to consult, so I didn't put on a suit for an interview on campus for a company I didn't care to work for.
