Anyone watch S2E1 of True Detective last night? I enjoyed it. It definitely echoed the first season - many confusing pieces coming together with little explanation while very interesting at the same time. I really like Colin Farrell's character (Detective Ray Velcoro) and his grittiness. Looks like he is pretty self destructive just as Marty (Woody Harrelson) in S1. I'm still a bit confused as to what Vince Vaughn's character actually does for a living. I'll probably rewatch the episode tonight to try and catch some details I might have missed.

Did anyone watch The Rock's new HBO show - Ballers? It looks really good. I will probably give that a shot tonight.

So we pulled the trigger tonight, for the second time on a new vehicle without even seeing it in person or meeting the sales guy. I have been shopping around for a while for a replacement car for Rachael's Elantra. It was a fantastic car but after reading back through the contract we needed to get out of the lease before they shred us. We needed something we can put some miles on, is reliable and better for us to take up to the mountains to see her family and to our farm in VA. And it would be nice not to have to borrow a friend's SUV/truck when we need to pick up something big. Rachael's only requirements were that she can adjust the seat so she can see out of the windshield, it drives "fun" and has leather seats. I needed AWD or 4WD, comfortable MEMORY seats (see short wife) and long-term reliable since I think we are closing the revolving door and paying it off (for once).

We looked at a WIDE range of stuff...trucks (Tundra, F150), Grand Cherokees (we liked this the best but Jeep dealers and their customers smoke crack for how much they value those things used), RR Evoques, Q5s, CX-5, MDX (my favorite next to the GC) and what we ended up in...a b00sted CPO 2012 SH-AWD RDX! :mrgreen:










So why the pre-facelift RDX you say? We actually test drove a 2014 and for a couple of specific reasons actually:
- It's certainly not winning any beauty contests from the front but it looks the best in black and the rear end looks MILES better on the 2012 than the newer models
- The interior subjectively feels nicer too for some reason. The seats in the newer models are harder / less supportive and the leather feels thinner than the 2012. Also wife's #1 requirement couldn't be met for some reason in the newer models but she had no problem adjusting the seat to where it needed to be in the 2012. shrug!
- SH-AWD was the big winner for me over the facelift. After 2012 Acura plopped a detuned version of the MDX motor into the RDX for more power + better fuel efficiency even over the boosted 4 banger, but in doing so also switched to a conventional AWD system used in the new CR-Vs to save weight. The torque vectoring SH-AWD I have read is vastly superior (same system on the MDX & RL) and we really want that extra insurance for the trips to WV. Having been stuck in a freak blizzard crossing the mountains from WV to VA last year in Rachael's car and only barely making it out thanks to my rarely used but still capable snow driving skills, this was paramount for me. With snow tires this thing would be beastmode
- Because turbo. The car puts a huge grin on your face, it really does. The most fun to drive out of all of the SUVs we test drove, including the 2014 model which felt softer and less responsive. It has a stock boost gauge built into the cluster? My Subarus didn't even have that! Yes Hondata has a tune for it and there is a suprisingly healthy aftermarket. Yes I have already been looking :lol:

We opted for the Tech package in black because the UI is vastly superior (that is an understatement, the base UI looks like my alarm clock), better sound system and nav which is whatever. Car has just over 31k miles so I hope for a long productive life out of it. The dealership is actually up in Hoodbridge so we are heading up Friday night or Saturday morning in wife's car to trade it in and see the family

No big plans yet other than tintz because million degrees in the south and dunno how I feel about the chromed wheels but not super worried about that. OEM step rails would be nice. More pics to come once we pick it up!

okay who is going? I'm 50/50 right now. I have a line on a trailer to borrow... I'm just trying to line up the logistics (hotel or camp, how much food to pack so I don't pay VIR out the nose, where to get an extra fuel can, etc etc)

Polaris SLT 750 3 seat Jet Ski, solid hull with no repairs but some cosmetic scratches. Starts and runs but needs a piston replaced (burnt a hole in it from running too lean) and a carburetor rebuild (see burnt piston). I will include a used piston and cylinder housing in the sale. Lots of newer and upgraded parts (triple outlet fuel pump, high performance flame arresters, high performance reeds). $400 without trailer, $750 with trailer. Have titles for both the ski and trailer.

This is a great deal for someone who is willing to put about 1 day of work and $400 bucks into it. Replacing pistons on this ski is super easy (I know, I replaced the same piston last season but didn't rebuild the carb :oops: - it takes about 2 hours taking your time.) Ski hits about 45 -> 50 on the water.

Purchased a new TV the other day so looking to sell my current one. Nothing wrong with it, it outputs a beautiful image just took advantage of a deal for a 4K TV that was well reviewed for it's upscaling.

It's super thin, even compared to today's TV's - 1.2 inches at it's deepest and very light. Perfect for mounting.

So I ended up trading the Miata for an 03 Wrx wagon with a blown motor then he put some money on top as well. Going to pull the motor and throw a new one in, then some wheels/tires, tb exhaust, accessport stage 1, and maybe lowering springs, then gonna call it a day and have a fun quick reliable-ish daily.

We bought this Passat TDI 6spd a few months ago. Fairly stripped down model is pretty fancy to us. We both really enjoy driving it and it gets 52 MPG. Which is good, because Jess puts ~24K miles / yr on a car. This won't be a project thread, but maybe a "watch this guy embarrass himself trying to figure out this dumb VW" thread.

1) Let's start with the worst oil change I've done. And that includes the Previa I had with engine under the driver's seat.
Buy filter and fancy VW 507.00 approved oil that no-one has. Thankfully it only needs 4.5 qts.
Remove plastic undertray. Because hey, why have a little hole in it so I could change the oil? Sawzall says it's gonna have one next time. 8x T25 screws seems "reasonable"... Oh, but the back is 3x T45. Yeah they need to be really super strong to hold up the plastic tray there, let me go buy one of those bits.
Ok I'm back. And I got the 32mm for the oil canister too. Should be easy peasy like BMW...

OHH so neat! A remote, easy to access oil canister that you could have mounted anywhere in the engine bay, but let's bury it under some stuff so I have to tug at wire harnesses and loosen some other line to get it out! And of course there's no way not to get oil on that braided whatever during this, nor to have the new filter and cap go back in without a few extra minutes of massaging and praying that I'm not cross-threading the cap.
In looking at other VWs, apparently this is just the hipster place to put it. I guess I should be thankful. In 2015 they moved this canister to back under the damn car. For additional irony? And the oil drain plug is PLASTIC?@!. :lol:

2) Fuel filter. Surprisingly easy especially since I've never changed one. A very refreshing 10 minutes later and I'm done.

3) Let's rotate the tires. Weelllllll..... what are these 9 point star drive do-dads holding on the wheel? I don't have that.

Well that's a first. After asking the internet, I had to bust out the owner's manual to get the wheels off with this fancy heavy duty paperclip that so elegantly pulls off the wheel bolt COVERS to expose the good 'ol wheel bolts. Well those little guys aren't going back on WTF. Why. :evileye:


That's all! Hopefully it'll never have a boost leak, I cannot even follow the intake piping as it loops around and under the engine and through this neat-but-almost-handbuilt-looking air/water intercooler (#83).

Will I be able to change the air filter in less than 2 hours?
Will changing the trans oil or coolant require flipping the car over?
