I don't think we have one of these and it doesn't really fit in the guilty pleasures thread so I created this. If we have a TV thread feel free to merge.
Anyone watch S2E1 of True Detective last night? I enjoyed it. It definitely echoed the first season - many confusing pieces coming together with little explanation while very interesting at the same time. I really like Colin Farrell's character (Detective Ray Velcoro) and his grittiness. Looks like he is pretty self destructive just as Marty (Woody Harrelson) in S1. I'm still a bit confused as to what Vince Vaughn's character actually does for a living. I'll probably rewatch the episode tonight to try and catch some details I might have missed.
Did anyone watch The Rock's new HBO show - Ballers? It looks really good. I will probably give that a shot tonight.

Lol this received some great response. I don't watch True Detective. Collin Farrell still acts?
I binged watched 5 episodes from season 3 of lesbians in jail (orange is the new black) and i actually didn't mind it and it was kind of funny and watching one short haired fat chick fuck another not fat long haired chick with a strap on dildo was....entertaining....i was also drunk...but I might try to catch up from season 1.
Anyone got anything on Better Call Saul. If it gets better, like really better, i'll go back to it. I stopped watching after the 6th episode or so. It was just starting way too slow.
We should start a movie thread instead of a TV show thread. Dude, have you seen Interstellar?!

I watched True Detective last night, loved it. The first episode sort of seemed like a prologue, giving us a nice little bit of backstory on each of the characters before they find themselves at that last scene like "So are we a team now?"
I'm not sure what Vince Vaughn is supposed to be either, I'm guessing the mayor or a congressman or something but if they gave a specific hint I missed it.

Yeah I think the "team" will turn out to be a pretty good story. Even if they aren't a team it seems like they will be having run ins with each other that should create some good drama.
Watched the opening episode of Ballers last night. Only 30 minutes which was a little disappointing, but nice at the same time. Looks like it will essentially be an Entourage-esque show with athletes - I ain't mad. I loved Entourage. I'm a fan of the Rock - he stays in rolls that fit him which I think helps him succeed. Will continue watching.

Ballers has no appeal to me but I did watch that Brink show that also started on Sunday. Pretty funny, has potential, nice to see Jack Black acting again.

Quote: And Cigar Aficionado cover model Vince Vaughn—not a detective at all, it turns out—plays Frank Semyon, a loose-cannon business operator with a troubled past who happens to share a name with a 20th-century Russian philosopher.

I finally watched the s2 premiere of True Detective last night. I know a lot of viewers didn't like it but I have faith - they're getting the character backstories fleshed out more than most shows right off the bat, so we have something to work with later. It should be good.
For me though, the real mystery worth solving is, what was going on in Rachel McAdams bedroom?

Just started watching "Orange is the New Black" and I'm surprised by how much I like it. I've been looking for something to draw me in since I finished House. I ended up watching the first 4 episodes in a row.
Be warned the second season kinda blows but the 3rd one gets some of the charm back.
Lauren and I started watching "Ascension" last night. Like a lot of recent Science Fiction it's a great concept/premise but there are some plot points and dialogue that feel like the writers just said "eh, fuck it, good enough."

Man I can't get into Orange Is the New Black anymore. Watched season 1 and enjoyed it. Season 2 dragged on. Finally gave up on season 3 after watching a few episodes with Emily. I do need to find the episode with the Ruby Rose shower scene though..

Sounds like me with Breaking Bad. I think I've been in season 3 for over a year now.

Like a lot of recent Science Fiction it's a great concept/premise but there are some plot points and dialogue that feel like the writers just said "eh, fuck it, good enough." Did they come out with the actual show yet or are you just watching the 3 episode mini series preview thing? I kinda liked it when I watched the mini series. The premise was pretty cool. I'm not sure I like that they gave it away so soon though if they are in fact coming out with a multi season show. It definitely seemed like it was a b list show with some of the dialogue and acting and special effects but maybe if it picked up enough interest, the show would get a bigger budget.
Edit: after googling it. It looks like its not going to series. I'm not sure why it lists 9 episodes and two part episodes. I'll have to go check and make sure I've seen it all. I think they were long episodes when it aired so maybe they just broke it up on Netflix. Originally it was 3 nights, 3 episodes.

There were 6 episodes on netflix, 3 chapters in 2 parts each. We finished it last night, it gets a solid "meh." from me.
What is wrong with the sci-fi genre? I feel like almost every sci-fi that looks worth watching has a good overall concept with mediocre acting, shitty plot points and shitty special effects.
**WARNING SPOILERS** (Although it wasn't very good so whatever)
My major complaints with it were 1.) Why were there "upper and lower decks" its a government funded project, there's not going to be a social class system and fucking economy inside a deep space vessel. They could've kept the exact same plot and just had the antagonists starting to go stir crazy (because they live on a freaking spaceship and never have and never will see dirt or feel the sun, reason enough to go crazy) instead of organizing a coup on the "lower decks." Stupid.
2.) The girl with supernatural abilities thing wasn't the best or worst plot idea for a sci-fi show, but they sure fucked it up with the cheesy orb of electricity and mediocre child actor.
3.) I guess you kind have to accept that it takes place in an alternate reality but some of the technology shown on the ship was way too advanced for the 60s. A handheld wireless device with an LCD screen?
I really enjoy the sci-fi/space genre, I don't understand why all the shows in it have to suck so bad.

im a fan of Falling Skies on TNT, if you are looking for a decent SciFi show. Season 5 starts this weekend and is the Final season.
Cool, I'll check it out.

Yea I agree with most of your points although it didn't bother me about the classing that much. It didn't rustle my jimmies but I didn't really think it was like a great needed part of the plot either. I would have liked to see some more development of the show and for it to go a bit further to be honest with better special effects, acting, and a bigger budget overall I guess.
To your third point, yea I see what you're saying, and I'm not sure I'm remembering everything correctly but I think they said that the scientists on board invented all our modern technology because they were inside their bubble with no distactions so that could explain that. However, where did they get all the materials. Like the ship could have only left with so much stuff on board, how do they keep inventing new things or 50 years. But thats a little deep for a show that doesn't get very deep into plot on its own.
