Project bug eye Wrx wagon - turboneticsSS - 06-11-2015

So I ended up trading the Miata for an 03 Wrx wagon with a blown motor then he put some money on top as well. Going to pull the motor and throw a new one in, then some wheels/tires, tb exhaust, accessport stage 1, and maybe lowering springs, then gonna call it a day and have a fun quick reliable-ish daily.

JDM EJ207? (The correct answer is "Yep, rex, you got it!")

Re: Project bug eye Wrx wagon - Jake - 06-11-2015

You could've just bought a Prius and skipped the "miserable Subaru ownership" that all ex-Subie-MMers seem to be destined for.

But congrats, should be a fun project!

Re: Project bug eye Wrx wagon - Senor_Taylor - 06-11-2015

Today we mourn the loss of the Miata that took my 33 West V-card and welcome the birth of the project that drives Scott over the edge of insanity. It's a great day for MM.

Re: Project bug eye Wrx wagon - WRXtranceformed - 06-11-2015

Ahhh and the proverbial yin to the MM yang...when one Suby is replaced by a Prius, another one reenters the fold. Nice choice. I second Rex's suggestion with perhaps some beefed up internals. Keep an eye on that gearbox too. What color?

Stolen from the group chat.

JDM 207 is forged slugs. Because FHI hates America.

Re: Project bug eye Wrx wagon - WRXtranceformed - 06-11-2015

Ooooh yea I forgot it's been a while! I have Subaru alzheimers. Or I'm just drunk with boosted V8 horsepower

How many MPG does net over stock? Will it make power on regular fuel?

probably the same as stock at cruise. needs a tune for 93 because it comes straight from Japanland where they get 98.

+2 for a proper 207 swap. for those that don't speak subaderp alphabet soup, its the balls-out 2.0 that was only available in the JDM race-spec models like the Spec-C. forged internals, huge ports, EL manifold and twin scroll turbo with an 8k redline, all factory OEM. its the only engine that EVER made sense to put in a modern WRX but we got dicked over with the problematic EJ25 because "dumb Americans" want big bore torque at 2,000 rpm in everything we drive according to subaru.

there are 3 problems with a 207 swap, which is (A) you're going to need a harness merge which can be a pain the dick due to the 207's active cam timing, (B) all 207's were probably driven like bats out of hell so you'll want to buy from a very reputable selling and find someone to go through the engine carefully before installation, and © its a 300hp turbo engine that wants to be driven like you hate it, so your MPG will suffer and probably your transmission too. they also require a tune because if you drive it stock its going to detonate like crazy on our 93 fuel because its tuned for the 98 they get abroad.

alternatively, just buy an EJ257 shortblock straight from subaru, take it to a shop to get stock compression, forged pistons put in, and stick it back in the car with some boltons. enjoy your 350-375hp wagon for the next 100k miles.

ScottyB Wrote:[ (A) you're going to need a harness merge which can be a pain the dick due to the 207's active cam timing,

Well, you dont' HAVE to. The JDM ECU and USDM harness for the WRX will play nice, but if you want the active cam timing, yes, you will have to do some harness wizardry, but from my research it wasn't too bad. I think most of the headache is from Less Free States where you have to do, like, the OBD scan to make sure you aren't making Indians Cry, which of course the JDM ecu doesn't play nice with, so people have to make sacrifices to the electron smoke gods to make the USDM ecu work with the JDM motor.

I mean, OP should do his own research but if the car needs a motor, it should have the 8500 RPM forged internals monstrosity.

Re: Project bug eye Wrx wagon - WRXtranceformed - 06-11-2015

I always said if I had to do a Subaru all over again, forged EJ257 with water/meth injection and call it a day

Re: Project bug eye Wrx wagon - turboneticsSS - 06-11-2015

Just sticking with an ej205, it's just a daily, the Camaro makes plenty of power, and if I'm goin tb for power I'll just do one of the number of things I'm in the position to do to make it even faster, scooby is just because I've always wanted a bug eye and awd to beat on in the winter.

Re: Project bug eye Wrx wagon - ScottyB - 06-11-2015

awwww. well, it'll still be fun.

just be sure to run a good quality 5W-40 weight oil in it. if you haven't googled spun bearings in EJ205's, brace yourself. its a large cause of 205 deaths and 90% of it is caused by "its-a-subaru-appliance-car" abuse coupled with running thin energy conserving 30 weights.

dump Rotella 5W-40 in it with a good OEM/Wix/Purolator filter and do a 3000 to 3500 mile change. should be good to go for a long time.

Re: Project bug eye Wrx wagon - turboneticsSS - 10-05-2015

Ok, after replacing the motor, and trans, Ive spent too much money and its up for sale, of course I get it super solid and then sell it.

Re: Project bug eye Wrx wagon - Senor_Taylor - 10-05-2015

Are you ever going to put an asking price or are you just going to entertain offers? I helped with your clutch that day, so I think I deserve a 75% discount.

Re: Project bug eye Wrx wagon - CaptainHenreh - 10-06-2015

Lol, "I did some work, can't tell you exactly what. Would like to sell, can't say exactly for how much."

Well I'll start the bidding at 500 dollars, a 12 pack of PBR, and a great handjob from our very own Ryan Jenkins.

Re: Project bug eye Wrx wagon - turboneticsSS - 10-28-2015

So I sold this, on to the next thing, a buddy's buddy is selling a 97 e36 m3 with 150k miles, Ill be picking that up just as soon as I can get up to Jersey
