Yeah the styling doesn't do it for me, and unless it's very aggressively priced it's gonna have a hard time going up against the Mustang, Camaro, and Corvette. Another Japanese legend brought back for a sales fail.

Especially since the Z4 price figures have been released. Easy $45k base for the Supra. If we are lucky it will be between 40-45k, but at or closer to 45k is way more likely

It strikes me as an odd decision to offer the Supra with an automatic transmission as the only option. Toyota has to know that this car is geared only towards enthusiasts who want a manual transmission. I get that BMW would offer the Z4 with the automatic only for those uppity folks that just want a fancy BMW. Toyota WTF!!

That one was probably driven by the German engineers because, objectively, its better.

that's what the 86 is for.

its a halo car that has to be SUPER TRACK TIMES WOW FAST so its gotta have whatever automatic will deliver those instant shift times. manual sports cars or supercars will only exist as a niche anymore.

i hate it. the supra was a holy name in toyota circles. as someone already said, if this one didn't have a supra badge on it i would have just assumed its another lexus toy for rappers and rich golfers to hard park at the local clubs.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

I've found that for some reason some of the Japanese companies have a really, really hard time with product planning for performance products.  I'm not sure what the cause is either.

I don't know if it's that they defer too much to engineers who may not understand the target customer very well.  Or if it's that their market research is fatally flawed.  Or if it's that they look at the competitive landscape and turn their noses up at what the frontrunners in each segment are doing.

In a vacuum I could see how Toyota could look at how a lot of customers prefer an automatic and a ZF 8speed is probably as fast or faster.  I could also see how they might think that the Mustang, Camaro, and Corvette are crude, heavy, and/or unreliable compared to their Supra, so people might choose the Supra based on that.  Especially if their impressions are based on the versions of those cars available in the 90's.

But if you're living in reality and you honestly evaluate what's out there, what Toyota is doing with the Supra doesn't make a lot of sense.  Maybe the car will be pretty light and push more power than the Z4.  But even then they're gonna have a hard time selling to sports car buyers without at least a DCT.

So... I have to ask, was the OG Supra much of a handling queen in the first place? I seem to remember them and the 3000GT as more GT cars - fast in a straight line, didn't fall all over themselves in turns, but not the #1 choice for The Ultimate Corner Carving Machine.

Seems like the 86 is the handler and the Supra is the GT car, so who cares about a quick-shifting ZF8.

They should sell the Supra used from the factory in a brown wagon with a 13 speed manual.

Having spent some time previously in the last generation, no is the owner to you question.  I found it very bloated to drive, much more of a GT car.
