Don't forget interest.
We took a pretty good hit on our Clubman, even though we owned it like four years and didn't buy new. No one likes to lose the money, but that's what happens when you have a hobby with cost basis in the thousands. I've tried to take up crossword puzzles, but they just don't do it for me.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
I lost 10k on the BMW owned for a year and a half not including the thousands in modifications I put on. Live and learn, and also pay to play.

Yeah I wouldn't beat yourself up too much on the loss man, almost everyone here could tell a story about money they have poured into on a car and not gotten back when it's sold. It's the nature of the hobby, pretty much universally. And if I'm being honest, it's one of the big reasons why I took a step back ... the benefits of owning a cool / fast car / multiple unnecessary cars *to me* don't generally outweigh the negatives until you get to the point in your life / career where money doesn't matter.
I agree with those above, just slow your buying / selling roll for a while and enjoy your brand new car.

Cars are a depreciating asset.
CX9 has lost close to 20g in value over 4 years. Mustang has lost around 17g over 6.
I also got to drive in new cars for those years. Got to pay to play.

Everyone has that one car....at least it didn't touch you bad enough to make you buy a Prius.

Yeah, I'm not too upset. Good learning experience and it's what pushed me to realize that buying a new car isn't really that bad an idea when you factor in maintenance.
I didn't really want to bring it up, but in an effort to change my life around, I'm definitely taking a step away from cars. I've really enjoyed being a normal 22 year old when I stopped trying to kill myself with my job and working on broken shit all of the time. The track can wait, my GTI is fun/cool enough to keep me happy, can autocross, etc. The DE was fun, but not Sell everything and suffer for a track car and spend $1000 a month trying to track it "fun".
I'll get back at it eventually, but I have zero desire to turn a wrench right now. I'd rather have money to go out with friends, or go on a vacation. Rather have time to golf or workout instead of keeping an old BMW alive. Honestly what car am I going to but that's more fun to drive than the Gti anyway?

I think most of the alumni can definitely relate and/or have gone through something like this before; others have gone further down the rabbit hole and I'm kind of envious of that (ie: Jake and DJ - so cool). We all have our priorities and you'll figure that out.
I went from hpdes (thinking I would turn my then mk2 gti into a track car) to motorcycles (tracking that and earning the chance to buy a racing license) to cycling and racing there for 4 years. Now I'm kind of doubling back since I do miss the people and the car scene a bit and modding my cars. I'd love to hit the hpde scene again, but my financial miser status is still there.

no shame in that. what Jayray said - look at how many MMer's dumped (or scaled way back on) racing/hpdes for other passtimes or forms of motorsport, while still being very interested in the car world...its fine and part of a balance in life. there are like a dozen alumni on this board that can tell you their own version of that story.

This pretty much describes 80% of the alumni.
We've all burned way more cash than we care to admit along the way.

We've all burned way more cash than we care to admit along the way. So true. I thought cycling was going to be cheaper than motorcycling... Boy was I wrong... I think I've dumped over $15k or $20k over the span of 5 years. The bikes and stuff are probably worth maybe $1k total? It's best not to think about it or make detailed excel spreadsheets of all your expenses... #ostrichdatbitch
Sold. Pending our banks getting together and making sweet hot fund transfers on Monday.
I'll attach the PPI invoice he sent me for the lolz.
Sold it for even less than listed. Many lessons learned. Excited to move on and make better decisions.

Has anyone else stayed in touch with people they sold a car to? The person I sold the 4runner to dumped a ton of money into it and drove it cross country a few times and sends me photos every few months.
Glad to see it's living the good life!

For the most part, no. But the guy I sold my green 325i to has passed it around locally over the last few years, and I hear it's going to some nutjob who wants to build a racecar out of it. Can you believe that?

I keep up with the guy that bought my 3000GT. He's done a lot of the mods I wanted to do...but has also done a lot of maintenance that I really wasn't looking forward to. Maybe now's the time to buy it back?
