This thing looks great and sounds like a blast to drive. I'm getting the impression that this gen is not built for tracking/racing very often. Is there a reason?

I have a little bit of a rub near lock but if you are turned to lock on a track there are other problems already...

So, a Mazda Motorsports hardtop is ordered after some technical issue with their site prevented me from ordering last week. Let's see if I can get this hardtop delivered and MAACO'd by Hyperfest (May 19th) if not I guess it's going to be the white shipping primer. Supposedly they should have some in stock to be shipped out. Let's hope so...
Something just doesn't want me to get a hardtop for a track weekend I guess haha.
Oh, I set up a PayPal dispute for the DG hardtop and won. They didn't respond to the claim.

Bravo. I say we vinyl wrap it in something obnoxious like blaze orange..

No. It'll be the hotness painted body color
Vinyl wrapping those compound curves is not going to be easy without a lot of experience. MAACO job will be cheaper than the material and time you'll waste trying to wrap it.

I'm not expecting much of a good job from MAACO, but if the paint match is worse than expected I'm probably just going to plasti-dip it black or something.

FTFY
Why not just get an actual paint shop to spray it? If it already comes pimered, they won't have to do much prep work and it shouldn't cost that much.

It's a track/race top not OEM. Also, it's shipping primered not paint primered. It's just a protectant.
If someone can logically explain to me why I should spend $600 to get a nice prep + paint job (hardtop was only $1k, so half it's value in paint) that will be probably 90% of the time a track hardtop that will get damaged due to just being a fiberglass shell, chipped, etc vs. just MAACO'ing it I'm all ears.
MAACO and be done with it.

How much does maaco want?
For track use, I consider maaco a luxury :-p
Personally Id probably just order a few cans from paintscratch and rattlecan it myself.

I would hope $150-200 max? I haven't checked. This is based off ScottK's whole Miata spray cost lol.

Probably more like 250-300. Setting up for a spray is pricey, after that its easy to just go full hog.

I think it was like 250 for an actual paint shop to repaint my rear bumper and diffuser on the M3. I can't imagine a top would be that much more. Granted that's Harrisonburg prices. Same shop did the Evo hood, front bumper, and blended into the fenders for 750.

Early on there was some trouble getting a rollbar to work with the softtop, so it never took off as a hybrid street/track car.
It never took off for club racing because SM exists so if you're racing a miata, you're racing SM.

Having Maaco paint my SM only cost $350 (or maybe it was $300, I don't keep track) for the entire car.

They actually do, just not with NASA. SCCA T4 class has really taken off with the NC Miata. I think they are expecting close to 30 of them at VIR in a couple weeks. Most of those are old converted MX5 cup cars that aged out with the ND cup cars came along in the series.

Looking forward to seeing the top on, they look so good on NC's. Also, not all Maaco's are created equal - some do an awesome job for the price, some suck. Case in point, the Maaco local to me (Chantilly) always got really good reviews for doing actual prep work and delivering quality jobs.
