So I finally called up the ducktail dealer and it looks like it's a straight swap with the stock hinges and latch. I mistakenly thought it would require a custom retrofit or tie downs; neither of those things appealed to me. I'm going to call up the shop in the next few days and see what their schedule looks like. They say they have a paint shop that can match the car exactly, so I'm likely to ship it direct to the shop and then drop the car off. I think all-in, this modification will run close to $2,000. The most annoying part is $250 for shipping.  Dodgy  I'm also going to order the rocker panel graphics while I'm at it.

This isn't happening at this point, but I was looking at CIBIEs again. It's hard to find decent examples of installs with the short hood and the impact bumpers. I finally found the two pictures below that show two different mounting locations. I'm not interested in a light pod, so it's either hood or fender mount. I'm generally partial to the fender mount, but a lot of that is because I'm skittish about drilling holes in the hood (velcro and tape??). What does the peanut gallery think?

The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

i really like the fender mounts, but i feel like they will cast a shadow from the headlights (i'm not sure if that matters or not).

The hood-mounted example looks extremely out of place and an afterthought. Please do not do that.

I was thinking hood mount, so if/when you got tired of it or switched things up you just have to replace the hood. Where fender mount would require 2 new fenders.

But the fender mount does look 100% better

So what's the point of this? Are you going to rally or are you going for some look?

I wasn't aware there successful Porsche rally teams? Can someone give me the synopsis?

I think it will ruin the look of this car to put those lights on but I might also love it once it’s all said and done. But, I think the hood would look better IF done right, unlike the pic you posted.

Can you update on the backstory of this car as in was it passed down, did you buy then restore, how did this all come about?

they both look awful but the hood mount looks less awful. fender mount just looks too busy and awkward around the headlights

Looks like the link in the OP got whored: http://chris.derecola.com/2013/03/a-pors...ily-again/

What's not written is my dad spends a vast portion of his retired life watching, buying, and selling 911 variants. In his search, this car popped up. It happened right around when the 911 market got ridiculous but high prices hadn't caught up with imperfect examples. This car was seen as a bastard because it was originally a 912 (they were still redheaded step children), an outlaw (it has parts from 911, 912, 924), and had the undesirable US impact bumpers. The previous owner had taken a 912 body, stripped it to the tub, fixed the rust, repainted with the factory color, put in a bunch of parts (including the 2.7L), and retitled it as a 911S. It was listed at $15,800 by a small classic car dealer in Ohio and my dad said if I didn't buy it, he would.

Sentimentally speaking, it's the replacement for my grandfather's factory original '67 911S.

He was big into the Porsche racing scene back in the 60-70s, but died when I was 13: http://chris.derecola.com/2008/07/where-i-get-it/

rally lights on a 911 are part of a package look to me...if you're gonna do 'em, you gotta have the door graphics and ducktail together as well.

either format looks cool, but practically speaking i'd bet money the hood mount will give you a better usable pattern at the expense of a little visibility down the hood.

That's a good read and cool website to get lost in, is it a blog of yours? Curious if the new owners of your grandfather's car have it all fixed and reliable now, or if that's too near impossible.

Also sounds like hell of a good deal so nice snag, I can see it going way up in the future when most "collector" examples are trashed, even if it is a 912 body.

That picture of Summit is crazy to look at...I can look at it and see myself on the other side of the wall organizing cars on grid and seeing cars that look nothing like #207 fly by. That's some awesome nostalgia.

Yeah, that's my site... although I don't really update it these days.

That car had a fuel problem that my dad couldn't ever get sorted. I'm sure someone took the entire fuel system apart and redid it... unless it's sitting in a garage somewhere not being driven. Fuel injection was added to the 911 between that model year and this one - I'm convinced RJ is a sadist 'cause he likes dealing with carburetors.

I don't remember the details, but I think my dad said that back then you could rent the track for like $100 and have the whole thing to yourself. I'm pretty sure that's why there are literally no other cars in that photo.

That listing is actually what pushed me over the edge on the ducktail. Last I read, all the commenters were freaking out because it got near salt water.

Those push bars are an interesting adaptation to the impact bumpers. I don't really want to spend thousands on fiberglass, just to tear the front bumper on a parking garage - the skidplate is metal and I scrape it like every third drive. I don't think you could do the bars without the rally/safari stance though. That said, I'd lean towards safari before I'd lean towards backdating to the long hood or making it a low strung PCA concours wannabe.
