Project: 1976 911S
#1
Given the full restoration that's already been done, I'm not sure this qualifies as a "project" but whatever.

Full story: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://chris.derecola.com/2013/03/a-porsche-family-again/">http://chris.derecola.com/2013/03/a-por ... ily-again/</a><!-- m -->

It started life as a 912E and had ~50k miles on it before it was completely gutted, rebuilt and upgraded with a 2.7 L 911S engine. Given the only real difference between the 912 and 911 of the era was the engine, it’s now titled as a 911S. It’s got a bit under 6k miles on the rebuild, so it’s about as fresh as you’re going to find a 37 year old car.

The Plan
-remove front plate holder
-panoramic rear view mirror or right side mirror (see below)
-window tint, maybe (requires both mirrors, by law)
-airbag, maybe

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

As in, an aftermarket driver's airbag? That sounds pretty crazy. Explain.

I'd seen some info on retrofitting from a newer 911, but I can't seem to find it. It's likely to be entirety too expensive to do it without it being dangerous... I need to do more research. I really just threw it out there as a list of possibilities.

The paint is the original color (for the 912). It's called Speedway or Ascot Green. I can't say I went looking for it, but it's definitely better than the most of the 1970's brown ones out there for sale. It's grown on me; party because everyone has a reaction (good or bad) to it.

Nice! I dig the color, I'd love it with the wheel centers black and maybe the "Carrera" script on the rockers.

I've seen some cars (including older Porsches) with these pimpy RAID airbag steering wheels as well, might be an option. I'm guessing that you'd have to take into account the factory airbag-less seating position and belt too?

Good spot on the black wheels, especially since the window frames are black vs. chrome. I could probably swap them pretty cheaply. When the car is here, maybe someone can do a photochop for me.

I'm not sure the Carrera would be appropriate, given it doesn't have a rear wing... but I do like the way this looks.

Gorgeous car. I'll admit I have a soft spot for older 911's. I imagine this thing is pure bliss running through the gears. Congrats!

Yeah I'm not sure I could ever feel good about this aftermarket mount-explosives-in-front-of-my-face idea. :|
Anyway, cool car

There's something cool about levers, especially the one on the floor, to control heat.

With no AC, I don't think I could ever own this thing on the east coast.

You mean like floor mounted reversed pedals? Both this car and the 944 are the stock bulkhead type. Are you seeing something different?
