We liked our Elantra, but wifey wasn't looking for something fast or sporty. It was dead nuts reliable and that one is still under factory warranty.

It looks like you can find Mini Coopers in that price range, but that seems like a terrible decision

Dodge Dart? Don't know much about these? <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=460361517&zip=28277&referrer=%2Fcars-for-sale%2Fsearchresults.xhtml%3Fzip%3D28277%26listingTypes%3Dused%26startYear%3D2007%26maxMileage%3D75000%26sortBy%3DderivedpriceDESC%26maxPrice%3D12000%26vehicleStyleCodes%3DHATCH%252CLUXURY%252CSEDAN%26incremental%3Dall%26firstRecord%3D0%26endYear%3D2018%26searchRadius%3D100%26transmissionCodes%3DMAN&listingTypes=used&startYear=2007&numRecords=25&maxPrice=12000&vehicleStyleCodes=HATCH%2CLUXURY%2CSEDAN&firstRecord=0&endYear=2018&searchRadius=100&makeCode1=DODGE&modelCode1=DODDART">https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sal ... e1=DODDART</a><!-- m -->

Personally, I would love to see you trick out a Fit and rallyX that beast. You would certainly bring all the boys to the yard:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=461366324&zip=28277&referrer=%2Fcars-for-sale%2Fsearchresults.xhtml%3Fzip%3D28277%26listingTypes%3Dused%26startYear%3D2007%26maxMileage%3D75000%26sortBy%3DderivedpriceDESC%26maxPrice%3D12000%26vehicleStyleCodes%3DHATCH%252CLUXURY%252CSEDAN%26incremental%3Dall%26firstRecord%3D25%26endYear%3D2018%26searchRadius%3D100%26transmissionCodes%3DMAN&listingTypes=used&startYear=2007&numRecords=25&maxPrice=12000&vehicleStyleCodes=HATCH%2CLUXURY%2CSEDAN&firstRecord=25&endYear=2018&searchRadius=100&makeCode1=HONDA&modelCode1=FIT">https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sal ... lCode1=FIT</a><!-- m -->

They do make a sport model apparently:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=462549606&zip=28277&referrer=%2Fcars-for-sale%2Fsearchresults.xhtml%3Fzip%3D28277%26listingTypes%3Dused%26startYear%3D2007%26maxMileage%3D75000%26sortBy%3DderivedpriceDESC%26maxPrice%3D12000%26vehicleStyleCodes%3DHATCH%252CLUXURY%252CSEDAN%26incremental%3Dall%26firstRecord%3D75%26endYear%3D2018%26searchRadius%3D100%26transmissionCodes%3DMAN&listingTypes=used&startYear=2007&numRecords=25&maxPrice=12000&vehicleStyleCodes=HATCH%2CLUXURY%2CSEDAN&firstRecord=75&endYear=2018&searchRadius=100&makeCode1=HONDA&modelCode1=FIT">https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sal ... lCode1=FIT</a><!-- m -->

These are weirder than a two-headed dick and it's probably a bad idea ot rally a hybrid, but it's a Honda?
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=457512527&zip=28277&referrer=%2Fcars-for-sale%2Fsearchresults.xhtml%3Fzip%3D28277%26listingTypes%3Dused%26startYear%3D2007%26maxMileage%3D75000%26sortBy%3DderivedpriceDESC%26maxPrice%3D12000%26vehicleStyleCodes%3DHATCH%252CLUXURY%252CSEDAN%26incremental%3Dall%26firstRecord%3D25%26endYear%3D2018%26searchRadius%3D100%26transmissionCodes%3DMAN&listingTypes=used&startYear=2007&numRecords=25&maxPrice=12000&vehicleStyleCodes=HATCH%2CLUXURY%2CSEDAN&firstRecord=25&endYear=2018&searchRadius=100&makeCode1=HONDA&modelCode1=CRZ">https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sal ... lCode1=CRZ</a><!-- m -->

And last but not least, probably the worst idea of them all and only two doors, but it's got a snail and the hoon factor is probably off the charts:

Jake and I talked about 1st gen Fits the other day. Maybe too small for Scotty + Fam, but darn it I think one of those at an Auto or RallyX would be a hoot with tires and an upgraded sway bar.

I'm laughing at how fucking similar this search is to mine right now hahaha.

Difference is I'm staying closer to the side of higher mpgs and less fun.

I just drove a civic si yesterday it's a great fucking package if you ask me and the dash/tech is good when you use it. It's not as bad as you think. Go drive a few.

Or just go buy a GTI since apparently that's what all the cool kids are doing these days.

Personally I'd like a Mazda 3.

unfortunately. i don't think it would be enjoyable for a 6 hour drive with 3 people and a weekend's luggage. i'm not a fan of mini's reliability and the fit is super weak....i'd LIKE 200hp or thereabouts

FiST / 500 / CRZ are all out for the same reason....either too small or 2 doors short

Senor_Taylor Wrote:Not really a car to be proud of, unless you're Polen

don't take it the wrong way, but i'm not pretentious about cars. everyone my age around here drives either a Responsible Family Car™, a BMW, or Canyonero Quad Cab.....all $40k+ cars. i never gave a shit in my poverty-spec impreza, because i was having too much fun. i picked the cars on that list because i'm already comfortable with the idea of owning one.

OK dingdongs, give me some actual information. how reliable are they REALLY. if i'm picking up a car with some miles, will it have been dumped because the intake is caked shut with soot and throwing a christmas tree of CELs? are the windows going to drop into the doors like the old mk4's? if the seats are plaid, does that mean i can go the speed of plaid?

i've wanted an IS300 since forever, but they're officially getting pretty old now and the mileages seem to be super high. IS350 y u no stik shift

Jake Wrote:Applebees? Who the fuck eats at an Applebees?

that was an honest joke, i'd never do that

damn, thought so. not sure i want to deal with that. LSD stock? i like the idea of pissing off purists, but i wonder if a 330i might be more sensible for the money

It's no older than a E46, which you seem to have no issue with. IS250's came in a stick as well, made 200hp, are cheap.

I've been researching the MK6 GTI's because I'm probably going to get one soon. None of these issues are all that common except the water pump which has been fixed by a newer part. Overall the mk6 gti is supposed to be a pretty solid car.

Common (ish) issues:
Water pumps - They used to have a ton of problems with these, but a newer part has fixed this
Intake valve cleaning - It will need to be done on any direct injected motor. Not doing it will cause misfires. Not too hard to do. Needs to be done roughly every 50-60k usually. A catch can may help somewhat.

More uncommon issues:
Intake manifold flappers - These things somehow break I think you just have to replace the intake mani. It's only $150 so not too big of a deal.
Timing chain tensioners - The early ones (before 2013 i *think*) have issues with this in higher mileage motors. Will destroy the motor if it fails. Not terribly hard to replace with the newer part. This is a pretty rare issue.
Mechatronics unit - Only relevant to the DSG trans. Not common, but sometimes these cause weird jerking/shifting issues

If you modify:
Manual - Any tune will eventually kill your clutch. The stock one is super weak.
DSG trans - Unless you're running a big turbo, you don't have to worry about any issues with the DSG holding power

Seriously, the Si checks a lot of boxes for most people and Scotty in particular. 4 doors, stick shift, decent leg/cargo room. Reliability for days. They are fun cars to drive every day and I bet it would be just as fun flinging it through the dirt. In case you missed it, Scott was driving a 2.5 impreza. No offense to Scott but that car doesn't scream out anything but econobox so I don't think attention grabbing is really the main goal here.

I would have sold Scotty mine....

On the GTI's and DI intake tract coking up, its real and its a problem. Have a shop do it, they'll clean 'er up for $500-600 and then after that install an aftermarket PCV & catch can setup - my A4 had that and no problems.

They will leak oil and coolant out of every o-ring in the block once your are north of 100k miles. Will be a few hundred in parts to get it all sealed up.

The HPFP followers wear and if you dont swap them every 30-40k they will eat the intake cam. Any car you buy, demand on a PPI and check the HPFP and intake tract, and use that to negotiate price/repairs.

They are GREAT cars and you are hard pressed to beat the value for money.

Mazda CX-5
TSX Wagon even though no one can ever find a decent one (price or condition) but suggest it anyway.
Focus ST even though it's always immediately shit on
Lexus IS
WRX/Outback/Forester
BMW 5 series

And, when people ask for more sport focused:
Mustang
Corvette
Miata again
S2000
E36 M3

So, peruse through that list and you should be good.

The TSI engine in the mk6 GTI's doesn't have the cam follower issue. That's only the golf r and older mk5 gti.
