The worst Roanoke area traffic issue is the percentage of people that come to a full stop at the end of an on-ramp. I swear you need 350hp just to do the ramp from 460 W to 581 S safely, because there's a 2:1 chance the person in front of you is going to freak out and stand on the brakes so they can wait until there's no traffic for half a mile so it's safe for them to "merge."

That whole area is a cluster fuck. Coming off of 460 you think you need to be in the right lane, then you realize that's the ramp to go North, then you have a truck next to you so you need to DRIVE DOWN THE SHOULDER to get to the 5 foot long lane to hit the ramp, then you're driving the piss out of your Miata trying to not get ran over after that hair pin of an on-ramp.

I may or may not have done this after an autocross at the Berglund Center. The best part was how they had scraped up the pavement right up to the start of the ramp, so I basically drove over a 3 inch cliff.

yeah, like if you're leaving tanglewood and then trying to get to I-81. it always aggravated me even more because its such a ridiculously wide ramp that you can really haul ass around it only to find out you need to come to a screeching half-sideways stop at the top because everyone is stacked up like a bunch of idiots

Oof. There is an on-ramp near my house that merges from Edsall Road to I-395 South, which I occasionally have taken to get down to Dominion or VIR. In the truck, with the car on the trailer waggling behind me.

The on-ramp is all of about 50 feet long before it becomes an off-ramp. There are four lanes of traffic to your left going 65 mph. And the fucking ramp is metered, so there is a red/green light that is intended to space cars out for the sake of merging. It only operates during rush hour times, but goddamn. You come to a full stop, and then are tasked with getting 12k lbs of 'Murica and Schnitzel up to any sort of reasonable speed as a battered Chevy Express with ladders falling off of it wants to exit the highway and some dipshit in a Sienna won't let you over.

Oh, and you have to get at least three lanes to your left to make the I-95 South lanes, otherwise you end up going to Tyson's Corner.

My strategy is basically blinker on, stand on skinny pedal and merge with one hand ready on the horn. People will move given enough of an impetus. It's terrifying.

Both true. This is a challenge. I may-have-a-few-times :oops: actually passed the stopped person on the right, squeezing between them and the barrier. For fuel efficiency's sake! Won't someone think of the children?
This problem also manifests itself in that when I am merging, and someone else is coming down off the highway, they *reasonably* assume that I will be going <20mph or stopping. So they go for the pass and heavy braking instead of tucking in behind me. But, surprise, I am already going 60 in my POS Miata or loaded down van.

I'm going to make broad sweeping generalizations. Like any large company, it depends who you're working for/with.

That said, its an old boys club, and its very much a 'who you know' culture if you want to succeed and you have to be 'all in' as a company man and expect to spend many years overworking yourself and getting shit on before turning the tables. They expect tons of (billable) hours, rather than delivering good work and going home and having a life. If you're ever without a job or off a project the onus is on you to go find yourself more (billable) work inside the company and get on that project. Gotta wear a suit every day. That said, I did work with a team there at Booz who were prime on a contract and they were great to work with.

This all goes the same for most large consulting firms, with the same original caveat. YMMV. It may be great for you, but I have known enough people that have gone through that company to know it wasnt for me.

I don't really care to work for a consulting firm, but they invited me to an interview and I forgot I even applied. Showed up with no tie and not in a suit and it went very well. CarMax called me today and said I'll know before December. That's my #1.

I know people who have work at Accenture, Deloitte, CSC, and a number of others who've had better experiences.

Running a small consultant group right now with a hyper focus on high quality work, it makes me laugh when I think back to conversations with some acquaintances that worked at the big firms in DC. None of those companies are immune from the political BS and immense douchery of so many people up there. I knew one kid working at one of the big four who did blow on the weekends and then "would put together some BS spreadsheet that these idiot clients paid like $400Gs for that basically said nothing". Right but your daddy invented some heart machine and has friends all around town so he locked you up this job? Right :thumbup:
