So, we do a lot of salary maneuvering in pricing and I meant to follow-up on a recent discussion about moving salary into bonuses. The PM was talking about this very thing, that the tax withholding being much higher on a bonus and how that makes execution (hiring) difficult once the job is won.

A pretty smart guy made the comment that at the end of the day your total tax paid is the same. I surmise form his statement that he means as long as your bonus doesn't put you into a higher tax bracket, you either get a refund (or smaller liability) at the end of the year. For example, if you're in the 28% bracket and your bonus doesn't push you over the limit, if that bonus had 40% withheld, at the end of the year when you file taxes, you get credit for the 12% additional withheld. So at the end of the day, you pay 28% of taxable income, you just paid it at different withholding rates based on the type of pay.

I tried looking into this briefly a while ago and thought the info was heading towards "true, but depends on the other 4 trillion tax regs". Got any smart tax people here??

I pay a really smart accountant / former IRS auditor to square me away every year, but no matter how you cut it when bonuses make up a huge chunk of your income you are floating a massive free loan to the fed until they decide to give you your refund the next year. The amount that comes out of your monthly checks is large and is not income that you can live on or invest. It doesn't surprise me at all that people balk at receiving big bonus chunks as their income. That is also aside from the fact that bonuses can be variable (based on personal performance or company performance or as Jon found out, changed arbitrarily at any time by the company).

When I took my current role I negotiated pretty hard for a significantly larger base salary as I am no longer held to a personal quota and my bonuses are partly dependent on company performance. It minimized my risk and increased my guaranteed take home income. It also helped me plan a little better for tax season.

We usually don't plan for a huge chunk, just enough for retention after training and certifying and they are suddenly worth more other companies.

There is definitely the perception among many that they never get that money though.

Good move- good friend of mine with a great track record did the same at his previous company. He has greater earning potential where is now but is back in the hot seat!

BTW- TurboTax beats me every year (by about $~50-100) when I do my taxes by hand. I still am clueless how they get the foreign tax exemptions on some of my investments correct.

Changing exemptions does help but it's not a silver bullet to fixing a bonus-heavy comp structure, trust me. You could consistently achieve 100% of plan and have a good idea what your bonuses and total comp would be year over year...and then destroy it the following year and instantly jump 3 tax brackets. I regularly saw reps at our company go from $140k YOY total comp to $250k-300k+ and at the highest level $180-200k YOY total comp to $800k-$1M+...with the vast majority of that coming in the form of bonuses and a HUGE chunk of it coming as a year end bonus. Obviously you're super stoked for that kind of year but everyone jumps on the phone with their accountant in January :lol:

Oh man. I've been wearing glasses since I was about 5. My vision coverage has always been okay, not great. My most recent pair cost me about $400. But they are the fanciest zeiss astronaut anti-glare shatterproof smudge proof lenses you can buy so that makes it okay, right?

I was prepared to spend a few hundred bucks, I just didn't realize i was going to need two pairs. In retrospect maybe I should've gone for the bifocals, but since you can't exactly try before you buy, I thought I would prefer having my whole field of vision in focus for a given task and deal with the inconvenience of having two pairs, over having to adjust the angle of my face to bring the computer screen into focus. :dunno:

$600 later, I've got a nice pair of metal frame long distance glasses on the way that'll get my vision back to 20/15, and plastic tortoise shells for when I'm on the computer.

All I know is my checking account is quivering in fear, I want a drink, and in a week I'll probably have less headaches.

For sure. When replacing a pair I usually get the cheapest lenses they make ($75ish) for my old pair (since it's an old prescription and the lenses are usually janked up at that point). Saved me this. Since I was on vacation though, having a pair of contacts with me was the hugest savior. If you don't have contacts, you should. I wear them for rough activities.
