So, I want a REAL camera.
#1
I don't want to get into photography, but I do take a TON of pictures. I like to document everything I do, kind of. I want something that's better than a smart phone, but it doesn't need to be something that'll win me awards. I'd love to be able to capture all of the awesome stuff I see when I go on my trail riding trips, or at the race track with you guys.

What are some good cameras around or under $100 that'll get me some nicer the average pictures? What should I look for if I'm scouring craigslist?

Is it reasonable to try and find something better than your standard "cool pix" camera for around $100?

At that price point, you're talking point and shoot. Canon PowerShot or bust. S, SX, or IS models.

I have a Canon PowerShot something-or-other that I haven't used in a few years. Will send you details when I get home but it's in great shape and uses regular AA batteries. Yours for $50.

I would recommend spending a little time here, you can do side-by-side feature comparisons on a lot of cameras and the comparison articles are great

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.dpreview.com/articles/4259691750/camera-roundups-2013-what-to-buy-and-why">http://www.dpreview.com/articles/425969 ... uy-and-why</a><!-- m -->

I've found the "travel zoom" category to be a good fit for me, since a decent optical zoom is something a phone is never going to do. But these are still ~$200+ for refurbs:

I picked up a micro 4/3 camera a few weeks ago for $200.
its a 'real' camera with a large(ish) sensor, very good image quality and real lenses.
much much better than a regular point&shoot

if that deal comes up again I would highly recommend it.

anything cheaper and youre really just talking point and shoot, which aside from a real zoom, isnt dramatically better than a recent high end smartphone.

+1. Honestly, for what you want, you can literally walk in to best buy blindfolded and purchase the first point and shoot you knock over and probably be happy with it, but I still like my trusty ancient powershot.

If you want "better than a smartphone" but "around 100 bucks", you need a nice-ish point and shoot.

Good news is they're pretty cheapsoooooooo

Just bite the bullet and get a DSLR. Nikon D50 or something of the sort. With an 18-55 you can find them for a few hundred bucks. If you decide you like it you can advance and get more nice lens if you don't like it then you can sell it for exactly what you paid for it.

Anyone else share this sentiment? ^^

Is a DSLR any more complicated to use?

A $100 P+S is a waste. Your pictures will look marginally better than a modern phone. Save your money and do it right once.

Eeeehhh... disagree. There's a lot to be said for optical zoom, which is basically what you're buying for $100.

Remember that DSLR while better for high speed stuff (like motorsports) and lens options, they are very bulky and to the average picture taker, you won't find it worth carrying around. I think someone mentioned the smaller bodied cameras (look like point and shoots but with big lens) with interchangeable lenses. Im not a camera guy but have a DSLR and never use it because I don't feel like lugging it around.

I think the whole point of the point and shoot is a larger lens/sensor. That's what holds smartphones back. That and the zoom.
