Project DD moonlighting as trail rig

JustinG Wrote:Remove plastic bedliner......insert painted bedliner

Once again I have to agree with this man.

I'm sure there is a way to get rid of the oil but "roll" on bedliner would be where I would go if you were going to replace it anyway. I think a gallon is like $50-$65 or something. I've never considered drop in liners any good and my dad opted for spray on when we got our truck and never looked back. That thing is indescructible and we got it when it was still a pretty novel thing. Granted, don't spill oil on it I guess but there is definitely a way and a chemical that'll get that oil out. I think part of the problem at this point is how long you let it sit originally. It probably leeched into the plastic Berliner.

Yeah, I might have to go ahead and paint one in. Ugh. I actually like the drop in because of the way the bottom is ruffled. Impossible to dent the metal in the bed.

Wheeled today with a buddy and some JMU people up at Flag Pole!

Had a blast. My buddy and I stayed after everyone left and we had some fun with the crazy amount of rain and mud. My tires, locker, and sliders all came through for me. Only thing holding me back is ground clearance, which will be addressed as soon as I order my new leaves and shocks after the car show!

If I were you, I would replace my intake box with one that does not have a hole in it.

Yeah, I'm going to try my damnedest to seal it up better. Honestly, it may just need a little more silicone. It saw standing water to the bumper probably 30 times yesterday and splashing water and over the roof 10s on times. Long enough to hold out for a snorkel.

You should be very careful around water if it's leaking like that. A hydrolocked motor aint no fun.

Yeah, it's a little worrying. I'll get some silicone and seal it then spray it with some water be for i do anything again. It's never leaked like this.

Not sure if I want to do that just yet, though. Cutting a huge hole in your fender is a huge commitment.

Measure twice, cut once. Snorkel is something to think about.. I'd consider it myself if a quality one wasn't $350+

if you dont have a waterproof battery and/or ECU a snorkel doesnt do you any real good. you are going to do a lot more damage to things other than your motor if you are getting to the hydro lock level on an offroad vehicle.

True, but still a snorkel is going to provide him with some safety in knowing he's not close to hydro locking it. I'm not sure how the Taco's are built but the XJ's have a nice little air inlet which, while not going to drown electronics yet, does in fact have the good chance of pulling in water depending on depth.

But, agreed in that the things you mentioned are indeed a big concern.

if they made a cowl snorkel like they do for jeeps that would be as high and as crazy as you need to go before issues occur. I guess sylvia has never had mud/water up that high before.... shes just been below the door line on her jeep.

automatics with trans computers, you need to be REALLY careful with.

You know, I've never thought about the trans until now...

Didn't think about a cowl snorkel either!

Not worried about that. I don't ever go up to my doors. Only water the upper half gets is splash.

I did notice that the passenger side of my engine bay was WAY muddier and wet than the driver. I wonder if I'm missing some flaps or something in the fender which would explain how I got so much mud in the airbox. The airbox is on the passenger side.

Looks like my oil was really really gross. Maybe I'm being paranoid, or maybe I had mud in it. Anyway, I changed it. New purolator air filter in as well.

Now, I'm wanting to get an even louder muffler, as the one I have now isn't noticeable at all unless I'm WOT at 3k RPM (Which sounds like pure SEX), which doesn't happen much in my truck. I want a deep rumble at idle to like 2.5k.

I have an 18 inch Magnaflow center in, offset ouch, oval body on it now. Decided I'd go with the 14 inch, which I planned on getting originally, but I was worried it would be too loud. I went to look up some pricing on the 14 inch, and realized that the link I have saved from when I bought my current one says "Body length: 14 inches"

Now, I have to wonder, did I buy the 14 inch? If so, this is WAYYY too quiet. I can't even imagine the 18 inch and how quiet it would be.

I would crawl under my truck later today and measure it, but this rain is nasty, so we'll have to see.

I also need to figure out something to mend the loss of exhaust note from me cutting off that last foot of exhaust piping out to the side exit. It seemed to have lost a lot of tone.

You will eventually learn to hate mud and deep water. I blew up a transfer case back in the day when Salt Shed was open in GWNF. My transfer case was full of muddy water. Start playing in some rocks. Fixing a broken axle shaft/ u joint is MUCH more fun (and cheaper) than changing fluids every time you go out, replacing wheel bearings/axle seals/ ball joints etc. from water/mud full of sand and silt, or worse case (like me), replacing a t case or (in your case) a third member because the bearings are toast.

You don't know how much I preach "Rock crawling is better than mudding"

I didn't plan on mudding, it just so happened to start pouring down rain at the beginning of my 6 hour trail ride.

I totally agree.
