If we come in as dirty as I did last time I went out, we might be sleeping in the unfinished basement.

3rd ride: comfort and speed are coming up a bit. I'm turning easier, I have more balance, and just feel better on the bike. Cardiovascular endurance is lacking as I get gassed pretty quick. That'll take a couple weeks to get in check. Overall I felt like 1000 times better today. Actually looking ahead instead of down is much better. Fell again as I went through a puddle and hit something I couldn't see and ate it into some mud. At least it cooled me off and it broke my fall. Cabell followed the 2nd time on the trail so he can comment more if he cares to. I can see now how people can bomb trails with speed. Just seat time helps significantly.
Picture Cabell took after the mud fun haha
How often do people actually ride?
It's much easier to get up and go when you have a buddy. Like today I got Cabell to ride. The other day was Cabell getting me to ride

Bring it!
Signing up for the Poca Go Mountain Bike Race in August. Looks like it will be a lot of fun.
"Enduro-style XC MTB race to be held on the single-track flow trails and XC trails at Pocahontas State Park in Chesterfield, VA. This race will involve multiple timed stages on downhill portions of the Swift Creek trail system with non-timed transfer segments in between. Racers will start in 30 second increments."

Balls! Very nicely done. You might be disappointed in my pace if you come down and ride with me.
Edit: On a side note, I was locking up my road bike at Whole Foods yesterday and some guy walked by and said "nice oldie but a goodie" (I ride a Cervelo P2SL). I suddenly felt 90 years old riding a steel 70s bike.

11 years (or around there) is a long time in bike tech. i feel somewhat the same with my 2011 Ridley Noah. Mechanical shifting, narrow wheels, 10-speed, and an integrated seatpost. Kind of amazing how quickly bicycle tech gets outdated. It's so devalued from what it was once worth i'm thinking of just keeping it after i get a new road bike.
At least you could transfer all of your parts to a new road bike.
Mountain bikes.... nope.

Rode this 3-day route this past weekend with some friends - https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30692201
These were some of the hardest days I've had on a bike, mostly because I've put on some weight and climbing 15k feet like a lead balloon on a loaded bike on tough trails doesnt go so well... the terrain out in the blue ridge is really amazing and tough.

Unlikely, I dont feel like I'm in the kind of fitness that would allow me to enjoy the race. I may go hang out and volunteer & ride out to an aid station or something like that.

Was this all singletrack or a mix of fireroads too? Also, pics of the bike??

Multisurface.... If I remember it was something like this - singletrack -> road -> gravel -> road -> gravel -> road -> gravel -> road -> fire road/jeep trail, i.e. shitty doubletrack littered with boulders -> road -> gravel -> road -> trail...
First day was 44 miles / 5100 ft climbing, next day 46 miles / 5100 ft, then 3rd day was 36 miles / 4000 ft. Ding, turkey's done.
I rode my SIR 9 - dont have a picture of it assembled so this is what you get. Rigid, 2.3" tires. Given the mixed terrain this was the best compromise I could come up with. A gravel/cross bike would be unrideable for long sections and a real mountain bike would be miserable on the long road stretches.

The mileage wasnt an issue. I did a local weekender trip 2 weeks ago that was more mileage, 1/3 the elevation and nearly all flowy park singletrack & paved/canal trail and it was a breeze, rolling into camp at 2-3pm. On this route even the descending was tough and slow in a lot of parts . We camped downstream of panther falls on the 2nd day if you know the area.
