WTB: Mini van to do burnouts with
Posted by: Senor_Taylor - 05-07-2018, 01:19 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (37)

Hey all! Time to let the cat out of the bag, Tyler and I are buying the cheapest mini van we can find that will make it to VIR and back and we're going to do some stupid shit with it.

Requirements:

  • Less than $750
  • Can be bought this week or next, driven to VIR, driven back, then thrown off a cliff or sold to someone else for more than $5
  • Can fit a Moped in the back
  • Relatively simple to work on (Nothing ancient, nothing like an E350) Preferably a Honda Odyssey or the like
Thanks!

  Photobucket image link fix
Posted by: RawrImAMonster - 05-04-2018, 09:29 AM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (1)

Anyone that has looked up any DIY guides on car forums recently has probably ran into the issue where any pictures hotlinked from Photobucket no longer work.  When Photobucket made that change a while back they single handedly killed thousands of automotive DIY guides on car forums.  Luckily there are smart people on the internet that make workarounds for this kind of thing.

I just found this today and so far it seems like it actually works, who knows for how long though.  Chrome and Firefox links below.

Edit: Replaced the link with a version that doesn't do shady shit with Amazon affiliate links.

  MM Road Map
Posted by: V1GiLaNtE - 05-04-2018, 09:18 AM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (16)

Based on Taylor's PTO dilema and some suggestions about going out and exploring it sparked my creative juices to start what I'm calling the "MM Road Map".

I use Google Maps heavily for documenting 4wd trips, motorcycle rides, and life's grand adventures. So it occured to me that we should start a collaborative map for MMer's to document roads, points of interest, etc. as part of the greater journey of being an enthusiast.

I personally have a map I call "Life Map" which documents anything and everything I've visited and thought was note worthy (food, coffee, temples, lodging, etc.) It's been really fun to use that as a reference when people are traveling and need suggestions.

Below is the link to the "MM Road Map".

MM Road Map

Some guidance:

  • Use Orange for car/motorcycles under the "Drives" layer
  • Use Blue for 4x4 under the "4x4" layer
  • Use the other layers "Points of Interest" and "Food & Beverage" for the obvious reasons
  • Make sure to DRAW a line for the route. It appears Google Maps limits the number of layers to 10

Here are a few personal examples of mine:

Motorcycle Routes

Life Map

Budapest Trip

As a way to utilize these maps here is the system I have used for a long time:

1) Download the "maps.me" app

2) Export the MM Road map via Google to a KML/KMZ file. These files are GPS files which are easily digestible by most GPS's.

3) Download the map and email it to yourself

4) I'm not 100% about Android, but for iPhone you can open the KML/KMZ file with maps.me and it will have the entire route there for you to follow

5) Walah!

Miata A/C and Cooling issues with questions
Posted by: balactm - 05-04-2018, 09:02 AM - Forum: Technical Discussion - Replies (21)

Ya'll...I'm confused.

Yesterday I recharged the a/c in my car (feels great!). Then I proceeded to have some overheating issues ALL day. At speed, at idle, everywhere. on a clock-type guage, normally the needle is just to the left of 12, it went to about 12:30/1 position at most. I had to go over 2 mountains on my way home (rte 211). I overheated on first one, pulled off, and I had no coolant leaking anywhere. I did notice quite a bit of clear liquid coming from around the heater core area, and then noticed that the a/c lines were condensing like crazy. Which is weird, because the a/c switch hadn't been on in over an hour. I had noticed some water dripping the other day, but didn't take much note of it, but now it got me thinking...Is my a/c on despite my switch being off? So I unplugged the a/c comp from the harness, started the car, and then plugged it in with the switch off again, and boom, a/c comp kicks in. Also, both fans are running....So, a couple questions:

Would a constantly running (not cycling, just ON) a/c comp cause the car to overheat? I know these have relatively weak cooling systems, but I feel like the cooling system should be able to keep up with the a/c. but what about if the a/c is constantly running?

Why is the a/c comp on, when the switch is off? Relay? interior switch? A/c clutch or comp?

Moreover, now the car feels completely different. Like it has a few extra hp (makes sense, since the a/c is DEFINITELY off), idles quieter, runs smoother, doesn't stall sometimes coming to a stop.

I also noted this morning that the heater seems to work differently. Up until this morning, if I had the heat on anything other than full heat, the upper vents would blow colder while the feet vents were blowing hot. Now, there is much more variation in the heat level on the upper vents.

I believe the a/c has been stuck on since I bought it, but it hasn't been a problem since it's been cooler. Suprisingly, there is very little on a/c's being stuck ON in miatas, usually they are stuck off apparently. Has anyone had experience with this type of issue?

  FS: 2003 Ford Ranger XLT - 4.0 SOHC V6 + 5AT
Posted by: Jake - 04-26-2018, 09:36 AM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (17)

The title has arrived from Washington so I can legally sell the ol' girl now. If you don't know the story as to how I acquired the truck, read all of this.

Basics

  • 2003 Ford Ranger SuperCab - bench seat up front, opening rear doors with jumpseats
  • Arizona Beige paint, tan interior
  • 4.0L SOHC V6 - 208 hp, 228ish ft-lb
  • 5R55E 5-speed automatic transmission
  • 2-wheel drive for sick burnies
  • 6' bed, unlined and well-used
  • 214k miles
Options
It has some. Lots, actually, for a Ranger. Leather seats, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, keyless entry. Sliding back window. Factory tow package. Leather-wrapped steering wheel. I added a JVC head unit with Bluetooth to replace the stock 6CD changer. Factory speakers (4) actually sound decent and aren't blown. It used to have a bed cap on it, so the wiring is there in the bed pocket to extend the third brake light.

The Good
It runs like a top. I put 3,000 miles on it sight-unseen and drove it cross-country, only adding fuel and washer fluid. The drivetrain will average 21ish mpg highway - I saw a high of 23 and a low of 16 over my trip.

The interior is in good shape and everything works. No dash lights are on.

In the last 4,000 miles, the Ranger has received new drive belts, a new fuel filter, new wiper blades, new cabin air and engine air filters, two oil changes, and fresh transmission fluid/filter (drain and fill, no flushing). The transmission shifts well, especially given its age and mileage. Tires are Hankook Optimo 725's with nearly new tread. Brakes are solid and last you a while.

The truck is a two-owner vehicle and spent its entire life in the PNW. I looked it over when I was doing the transmission fluid service, and there is no rust underneath, save for little bits of surface-y stuff on the driveshaft/exhaust. It could pass for a much newer truck.

The Less Good
My uncle was a smoker and died from COPD. He smoked in this truck. I have cleaned it extensively and will be steam-cleaning the carpet this weekend. The funk is largely gone, but in the interest of full disclosure, it was smoked in.

As mentioned above, the bed is un-lined and it was used as a work truck. A DIY bedliner would make it look nice and newish, or you can keep using it as a work truck and not give a shit about the painted bed.

Money and Formalities
I'll be putting this up on Craigslist shortly with an asking price of $3,500 OBO. Feel free to make offers. It's a nice truck and should serve someone well.

I am spending Sunday cleaning this thing up a bit and it'll be officially available after that. You will receive a clean Washington title, one key, and one remote.

More photos to come but it looks like this:

Track Night at Dominion Raceway (May 17)
Posted by: G.Irish - 04-25-2018, 03:35 PM - Forum: Events - No Replies

I had a pretty good time at the first track night this year at Dominion, thinking about doing another one next month.  $150, an hour of track time, and you only need to take a half day from work to partake.  The SCCA folks were pretty chill at the one I did, and the car counts were more than reasonable.

Anyone interested?

SOLD: 2010 Honda Accord LX-P, auto, needs nothing, 127400 miles, MM price $6500
Posted by: BLINGMW - 04-22-2018, 01:59 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (10)

Well maintained and needs nothing (but a bath). All struts replaced this year, brakes and serpentine belt last year, tires have good life left. Tow hitch added last year for bicycles. Dent under passenger side rear door, paint scuffs, and whine from power steering after cornering are the only thing keeping it from being perfect. Listed for $7400, MM price $6500, could deliver to NoVA or Harrisonburg. Hides in any parking lot!!
