  1999 BMW M3
Posted by: Scott - 05-29-2019, 10:09 AM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (15)

In a move I'll probably regret,  it is time to move my 1999 M3 on.  I bought it in December of 2017 and have only put about 2k on it during that time.  Between a 1 year old, changing jobs, moving, race cars, etc I haven't had the time to enjoy it as much as I hope. On the plus side, it's sale of this will help fund a detached garage at the new house.  It currently has 141k on the odometer.

It has had a ton of maintenance as well as some upgrades done over the past couple of years with the majority of the "E36 things" sorted.  The one interior issue is that the liner for the sunroof has detached, but is black underneath so it's hardly noticeable.

To be completely transparent, the not so good. The Carfax has a "total loss" listed in 2013, 20k miles ago.  I've communicated back and forth with Carfax over the last year to get an understanding of what happened with little response as the car does not show any signs except the LF fender is a DOT-R replacement.  Underneath everything is straight and the even the radiator support is OEM and shows no sign of ever being removed.  Autocheck does not show any previous damage history.

Also, the price is copy and pasted from another forum.  If someone is seriously interested and ready to pull the trigger, we can have a serious talk about the selling price.

  OEM Miata Wheels
Posted by: jmwhtzl - 05-27-2019, 01:05 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - No Replies

Set of OEM steelies with center caps and a set of OEM daisies. Not a good tire between them all. Theyre all in good shape, just need a good cleaning. Make me an offer, I'll trade for any integra parts or maybe other stuff, I just need them out of my garage.
I can meet around the Harrisonburg Area but beyond that buyer must come to me.

Pulled off an E30 325is with 4-5/32nd tread each. Slight cracking as they are older but I wouldn't worry about it on a street car. Rubber is still soft.

Anybody need a brokeass project or parts car for $1200
Luther picked this up from a local guy who got it from Copart I think. Whatever his plans were to do something with it aren't going to happen so I'm helping him advertise it.
I think it's got like 200 or 212k miles and pretty sure the wheels are different now, but not sure what they are.
Clean VA title, can get the vin.
It's on the trailer and ready to get delivered.

  Well That Was Quick

How it all began:

So I started off this journey looking for a fully loaded, 2015+ Jeep Grand Cherokee. Preferably a Summit for the sound deadening glass, leather trim, and HK surround sound.

I had sold the Porsche about three weeks prior, so I was without a car and just relying on my motorcycle as I stayed in Harrisonburg for Maymester. This was all fine and I wasn't in a rush but as time went on, Hyperfest came closer, as well as my internship in DC which I would definitely need a car for, all loomed around the corner. This made me step on my search, nudge my budget up, and find a car that was specced just how I wanted. It was a white on brown, without any of the chrome mirrors or handles on the outside, only thing was it was on Iowa. I remember Jake saying how he used airline miles to fly out with a friend and road trip the car back, so that's exactly what I did.

I flew out at 6 am Friday morning to Des Moines, Iowa with a friend who decided she'd tag along 6hours before we left. I don't know how I could have kept my sanity doing this trip alone so glad I have some friends as crazy as me. Anyways, we got to the dealer and got the paperwork done pretty quickly. Noticed a few things that weren't online, like minor curb rash on a wheel, panel gaps, squeaky belts, and a small tear in the driver's seat. Oh well, this is what you get buying a car sight unseen, and I was already there with no ticket back home, so we made a deal and I was on my way. I know, I should have gotten a walk around video of the vehicle but even then I might have missed those things not seeing them in person, lesson learned and not a huge deal.

We then proceeded to turn a 16hours straight drive home, into 24 total hours of driving, 1,300 miles covered, 3 days on the road, and 5 main cities visited. Had some fun and put together a "vlog" of sorts for the entire trip, it's long but if you want to follow our adventure, here's the private link.

Now onto the spectacularly bad:

So we got back home on May the 12th, everything is fine and I go about using the car around town. Hypefest is that Friday so we pack up the car with three people, and head off for the weekend. Had a great time all weekend, and Sunday rolls around so we again load up the car and get on our way. Mind you, no crazy stunts were done in the Jeep, I wanted to take it on the off-road course but never got a chance, all this car has seen is highway and city miles, around 1,500 at this point after 10 days of ownership.

So after about two hours of driving back from Hyperfest, we stop to get food and I notice it smells a little like coolant. Pop the hood, and it still has full coolant and no signs of leaks, cool. Sit down for an hour to eat, and get back on the road for about 20minutes. Here's where it gets fun. All of a sudden the temp gauge spikes all the way to the top, fans go on full blast, and the engine begins to knock. Nice, I'm still 100miles from home on the highway with two other people, and a car full of luggage. Within a minute or two I get "Service 4wd system, Service Throttle Cable Actuator, Low Oil Pressure" and a flashing CEL as the car loses power as I pull off to a truck weight station along the highway. Pull up behind a truck that's stopped on the scales, and the Jeep clacks and clutters to a stop. Try to turn it back over, no luck, the engine is completely seized up.

At this point, I have semi trucks behind me trying to get onto the scales, meanwhile, my car is stuck pouring smoke in front of them, and it won't let me put it into neutral because of FCA's wonderful shifter design that only lasted a handful of years. After a few frantic minutes of YouTube, I find an emergency latch to put it into a neutral mode (some sort of lockout that can't be undone apparently), and we push it into the lot behind the weigh station. State trooper there was pretty understanding, and we called a tow truck and waited.

I have towing under my insurance so I thought all was good until I realized that we were 100 miles from Harrisonburg, and insurance only covers the first $100 worth of towing. Good thing I canceled AAA 6 months ago :/ So I have a difference of $250 to pay, whatever, get us back home man.

Then we realize something else, tow trucks normally don't have space for three people, especially not for an hour and a half drive back. So we just waited to see what they would say when the truck arrived. The guy shows up, then proceeds to tells us he's been up for 36 hours and only had one hour of sleep in his truck last night, this should be interesting. We came up with a plan though, trade the case of Monster we got from Hyperfest, in exchange he lets us sit in the Jeep while it's on the flatbed getting towed back to Harrisonburg. Somehow he agrees to this ridiculous plan and off we go.

So here we are, in my brand new broken car, less than two weeks after buying it, sitting on top of a flatbed, sending it down 81 at 11 pm on a Sunday night. So what else do we do other than crank the music until the battery dies, and go through all the leftover beer we had from Hyperfest. This in itself was hilariously fun, and a story I will absolutely tell my kids one day, the ultimate booze-cruise.

Where we are as of today:

So the dealer that sold it to me, Acura of Johnston (part of Lithia Motors), included a 60day and 3k miles warranty. This covered the tow bill as well as the loaner I am in right now. The local FCA dealer in Harrisonburg (Dick Myers) has the car, but can't get to it until next week to even see what was going on. I don't really trust them to do any work on the car, especially something this big. The fact that the tech they sent out to jumpstart my car found a way to mix up positive and negative wires, then set my fuse box on fire was not very confidence inspiring.

I called a shop back home that I normally take my cars to, to get a ballpark number for a new 5.7Hemi drop in. They said anywhere from $7,500-9,500 for parts and labor. Seems about right given a new engine alone is close to $6k, and who knows if the trans is good. It should be, but that service 4wd system was kind of odd given the other things going wrong at the time.

Here's my thought process, after just 10 days with this car, it had an absolute catastrophic failure, and I don't really want it to get fixed just for this to happen again outside of warranty. My ideal situation is for the dealership that sold the car to me, to buy it back given the experience I've had so far with it. I already know they are going to fight this, but that's what I'm pushing for. Since the dealer here can't look at it until next week, I'm just sitting and waiting. I got the quote from my shop back home last night, so my plan is to call the general manager today, put on my best Karen wig, and talk things out with him to figure out what will make this right.

If y'all have any suggestions for this, I'm all ears. Other than that, this might have been the shortest car ownership I've ever had (I think the e23 was about two weeks so maybe I'll beat it). Oh, and this is probably the last non-German car I ever buy seldom maybe a Ford truck. Womp womp, sorry America.

Hello all! uHaul trailers suck and my financial sense sucks even more! I'm looking for a good deal on a decent trailer. Budget is around 2k or less if possible. 18ft or more but not super big. Toolbox and tire rack is a definite plus.

thx.

Hi current and past MM!

My name is Chase and I am a rising senior at JMU! Wow... time flies Sad

Anyway, I am a marketing major with a concentration in European business and a minor in entrepreneurship. I have owned an auto detailing business since I was 12 (https://www.facebook.com/detailinginva/) and now own an online mastermind group for mobile car detailers (https://www.facebook.com/groups/mobilede...astermind/). Have since taken a more managerial role in my detailing business since I no longer am in Williamsburg very much.

In Harrisonburg I am interning with a commercial real estate firm and really enjoying that. Strongly considering RE in some capacity as a career path.

Currently, I am in Columbia, Maryland interning for Fiat Chrysler's Mid-Atlantic business center in sales, marketing, & business operations. Any current / past Maryland MMers I would love to meet up!

  Taylor Goes Platinum - 2011 Ford F150
Posted by: Senor_Taylor - 05-02-2019, 03:38 PM - Forum: Member's Projects - Replies (57)

Hello all,

The door continues to revolve. This time the GTI is gone and a much older truck is in its place. First, let me say that I think the GTI was the best car-based decision I've made. I was in a bad place mentally (stressed), physically (back pain), and financially (old broken cars and no money) going into 2018 and the GTI really solved a lot of those problems. It was a great car and I think it's completely responsible for not only letting me get a leg up on life and really start enjoying a less stressful, more fun-filled life, but it also allowed me to finally dive into track work. The GTI was fun and reliable enough for me to finally do some DEs without much worry while I saved money and had time to get a track build going. Now its watch has ended and the track car is in full swing, so it's time for it to go. I'll miss it and I'll always appreciate what it allowed me to do, but this is the way it's got to be.

I've wanted an 2011+ Coyote F150 ever since riding in Jake's grey one at Summit point a few years ago. At the time, it was one of the nicest vehicles I had ever ridden in. I knew at that point I'd like to have one someday. My initial plan was to drive my E36 to the track and keep the interior in it for at least a year. That didn't happen. I don't know if I'm 100% committed to towing to every event due to cost reasons, but I determined I at least wanted the option after having my tire fiasco at VIR and then trying to get to the track at night in the rain on R Comps at the last Summit event. Thus began the truck search.

I already knew what I wanted. 11+, V8, Crew Cab, HIDs, 4x4, Bucket Seats, Back Up Camera, and minimal chrome. This equated to an FX4 package. For the next few weeks I scoured online listings and called just about every dealer from NC to PA asking about their trucks. Eventually I spoke to Jake and he got me hooked up with the Sales Manager at Battlefield Ford and that became my main base of operation. I test drove all manner of trucks ranging from base model work trucks all the way up to a 2017 Platinum, prices ranged from a 20,000 White FX4 that I almost would have bought if Jake wasn't there to 40,000 on one of the newer ones. However, I stuck to my guns, knew my budget, and knew that I wasn't going to make the same mistake I've made in the past and buy something crappy because I was impatient. I continued to make trips to dealers and check out their stuff, each time passing on one or two trucks. This was until my third trip to Battlefield ford. I woke up this Sunday morning and immediately checked to see what inventory had come in. I found a couple EcoBoosts in the trim I wanted and a 2015 Sport package with all the bells and whistles that caught my eye, but was out of my price range.

I showed up around noon and the Sales Manager ran out to meet me. He said there was a truck he knew I'd like and was perfect for me that was just traded in 15 minutes before I showed up, so they already had it pulled up for me. It was just about everything I wanted, but it was an ecoboost. However, I had an open mind and took it for a ride. All seemed well and I was on my way back, about to consider that truck strongly, and I decided to really goose it. Hesitation, stuttering, check engine light. I limped it back.

On to the next one. The red 2015 sport was just about out of my price range, but I was going to consider it due to it being the new aluminum body style and everything I wanted. I took it for a drive and it felt great, but for some reason, I didn't love it. Maybe it was the price, maybe the car had some hidden problem that tipped off my spidey senses, I'm not sure but I had some reservations. About a mile from the dealer on my way back, the tire went from 30 psi to 0 in the span of a traffic light cycle, so I pulled off the road and waited 30 minutes for the salesmen to find me. He picked me up in a base model work truck and I was delighted at how the cloth seats helped ease my back pain, whereas I had been quite uncomfortable in the slick leather before.

I came back to the dealer and asked the sales manager if there were any trucks that were slightly outside the parameters I provided, maybe even with cloth seats. He searched the system and found that the commercial Ford shop across the street had a white 2011 traded in that morning but he didn't have any information on it. At this point, the dealership was really busy, so I decided to enjoy the weather and just walk over to this other lot. After walking down the street and realizing I went to the wrong place, I found my way over to where the truck was. There on the lot sat a beautiful white, F150 Platinum. They tossed me the keys and I went to check it out. From the moment I got in and turned the key, I knew it was the one. This truck hadn't even been through the shop yet and it still felt better than every truck I'd driven so far. The seats didn't have any cheap leather conditioner on it yet and it hugged my back very well. The power running boards and AC vented seats were such a delight. The truck pulled, stopped, turned smoothly and confidently, and I even noticed a distinct rumble when getting hard on the gas. I pulled over to get a good view of the truck halfway through my drive and found that it had a roush intake on it. Someone clearly had a truck they were proud of.

I went back to the dealer and put a deposit down after finding out that they were asking a price that was near the low end of my budget (I don't know why) and asked when the truck may be ready for me to come back for. The swore to me it would be ready the next day by five even after I told them I was in no rush. They doubled down and said it would be ready no matter what. We talked numbers some more and they offered me more for my GTI than any other dealer had yet, well over what I owed on it. I asked if I could just leave the GTI there and take a loaner since I wasn't risking anything happening to it and they gave me an Audi A4 that smelled like ball sweat and cheap cologne, but it was nice enough. I requested PTO and planned to come back the next day.

Well, my bank and this dealer entered a battle to prove who was more incompetent. Granted they both were as nice as can be, over the next 2 days, I had to speak on the phone with both of them a ton of times. They couldn't figure out when the truck would be ready, who to send paperwork to, or what the right paperwork the other party wanted, etc. It was frustrating and tiring. I ended up being told I'd have to wait until Tuesday to come get it, which was fine except for how many times they told me it would be done Monday even though I said it didn't need to be. I ended up at the dealer on Tuesday and politely mentioned that the process was a bit more difficult than I had hoped and that I didn't appreciate being rushed through the process like they were trying to do. The GM of the dealer ended up getting an attitude with me and going on about how he didn't need to sell it to me, how my sale wouldn't make or break him, and how he could sell the truck for more money to someone else that day if he wanted to. He implied he was insulted that I would say such a thing after he so "generously spent $3000 on parts for the truck, answered all of my questions, and got everything ready for me quickly", none of which I asked for. At this point, I almost walked out and asked for my deposit back, but I figured I'd made it this far, I could suck it up for the perfect truck.

I suffered through another hour of people fumbling paperwork, taking forever, and generally being unhelpful, and I ended up driving home in my new truck by 4.

Details:
2011 Ford F150 Platinum
SuperCrew Cab, short bed
85,000 miles
Purchased, owned, and traded in locally
5.0 L coyote V8
4wd
Heated and cooled Leather front seats
Heated rear seats
back up camera
Power running boards
Backflip bed cover
sun roof
Roush intake
Navigation
Factory Tint
Sony sound system with Subwoofer under rear seats

etc, etc, basically every single option you could get on the truck in 2011. It drives very well and I've found nothing wrong with it. The paint seems fairly clean for its age and the bed has minimal wear. It has new brakes, good tires, and everything works as it should. I'm excited to have this and have lots of things I've needed a truck for that I plan to knock out soon. The payment is more than the GTI, but it'll depreciate was slower and I feel good about that. Waiting to see what the HOA says about keeping a trailer at my house, and that will determine how quickly things progress from here.

  WTB: 20' foot enclosed
Posted by: rherold9 - 04-30-2019, 01:23 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (39)

If you see one, shout one. I've looked on CL, Racing Junk, and NASA Forums.

I'd rather not spend money on a new truck, atm or rather not shit my pants with a trailer too long for the F150 like a 24'. 24' is probs doable, but may not be the most fun.

Budget ~$6k. Hoping for a somewhat finished trailer. Aluminum frame preferred

Ideal:

Cabinets
Winch
A/C
Tire rack(s)
Finished floor or walls

Taylor wants a trailer so I may sell him the open if the right enclosed trailer is found
