***The Official Time Trials/Time Attack Thread***
#1
In an effort to keep debates out of the build threads this can be the new playground. There is theory on building cars, debate on what parts are helpful, issues with time trail cars that need to be solved within the rules (and points 99% of the time), and Ill even try to keep rules updated here.

NASA Time Trials: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.nasa-tt.com/Rules">http://www.nasa-tt.com/Rules</a><!-- m -->
SCCA Time Trials: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.scca.org/contentpage.aspx?content=44">http://www.scca.org/contentpage.aspx?content=44</a><!-- m -->
Redline Time Attack: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.redlinetrackevents.com/">http://www.redlinetrackevents.com/</a><!-- m -->

NASA has more local events, the SCCA has limited events locally, and Redline is a west coast thing. SCCA has the ÔÇ£solo1ÔÇØ which is sort of like time trials. There is also ÔÇ£One Lap of AmericaÔÇØ I would deem a huge time trail style event.

If you study the rules long enough, youll always be able to find that gun you can bring to the knife fight! It takes time to get good with Time Trial rules, so feel free to ask questions but try to read the rules first. And by rules, I mean the rules and the point sheet. One of those two documents might have the answer.

if BMW made a FWD it would be the biggest fail... oh wait... its a mini cooper and its not too bad for autox. your next build should be a TTU Mini Cooper!

My stack of parts and shit pile for a car as an example this is based on a true story!

NASA TTC 1990 KRX Si

I asked to be dyno reclassed to compete in TTC as my final goal. I also had to provide my intended OR actual dyno HP, as well as the competition weight I would like. The swap information also had to be provided. The engine, its rated HP from Honda, etc. My two BASE CLASS options are:

1. TTD*: 180fwhp/2450lbs
2. TTD**: 181fwhp/2350lbs
(each * is equal to 7 points spent)

With 225/45/15 (vs the 245s at TTD base tire) I gain back 4 points. To go from TTD* to max out TTC (to include my tire size points) I have 36 points to spend. Points burn up quickly!

- Hoosiers/BFG R1s/etc = 10 points
- Transmission Gear Change (required due to swap) = 3 points
- Limited Slip (required because well it is) = 3 points
- OTS Koni Shocks = 3 points
- Ground Control sleeves/springs = 2 points
- Swap Bars = 2 points
- Front Cross Member Modification/Replacement (swap requirement)= 2 points

Total: 25 points 11 points left in TTD* and 4 points left for TTD**

So you get out on track and see what the car is doing. You want each of the next points to really count you need to pick up time because DJ the front wheel drive hater is still a little faster. Do you need big brakes? Some theories say thats a waste of points! Do you need aero to keep up with his HP on the straights? Do you go with TTD** to save weight and only play with 4 points? There is a ton of crap to go over!

- Big Brakes: 2 points
- Front Lip: 3 points
- Side skirts: 2 points
- Bumper holes: 1 point
- Wing: 3 points
- Etc

This is how I have attacked the epic need to bench race while I assemble all the required parts for the swap!

I had some bad luck with motors. I also refuse to over extend my budget. <3 if you saw the gear in my garage right now, you wouldnt question who will be BACK on track.

check craigslist for the weights, people always trying to get rid of excercise equipment on there.

well if you are going to do this on your own...
1. lay out the scales where they need to be to fit the M3
2. mark the loations on the floor with tape... box them in
3. use a big level and find the highest scale (your garage floor is not level)
4. shim the scales with metal plates to make them all level (you can come borrow all the flat metal i have)
5. keep the scale pad wtih the metal, remove he pads/metal and roll the M3 in
6. jack up the M3 and replace the metal/pads
7. corner ballance your shit

***put weight where it helps... you had too much in the trunk and it was pushing the car around. be smart and remember that "too much" adjustment on a corner might hurt alignment adjustability. so try to mix it up, spin a collar, move the weight, etc... small steps. also, before you "place" your weight, make sure you can actually mount it there without some crazy drilling and cutting.***

Yeah I already have places in mind for the weights. My biggest concern was levelling out the scales, so I may need to borrow those metal plates from ya.. IVe done it before, just sucks cause you have to roll on and off the car like a billion times.
