Audi 80?

So I was doing my usual pursuing of CL this morning at work while on hold with Cisco and came across a 1988 Audi 80 Quattro... anybody know anything about theses cars.. Did a little googling and figured out they came with a I4 or I5 motor.. Thought it might be kinda different to have one.. like I said was just bumping around CL and it caught my interest.. could be a fun beater/autox saloon.. Opinions?

they use a 2.2 I-5 IIRC. the driveline is extremely robust, unfortunately the electrical aspect is not. expect to chase lots of BS nickel and dime problems for a car this old. they are very odd cars as well, with a longitudinal I-5, side mount radiator, battery under the rear seat, etc, so they are not going to be naturally easy to work on and parts are getting tougher to find. the fanbase for these cars is mostly a small cluster of rabid audiphiles that will not drive anything else. that said they are among the last of the truly unique, mostly overbuilt audis and are becoming more and more rare.

cheap/fun auto-x'er? nay sir. maybe a "fun" project car or rally-x'er though.

Looks interesting... Here's a good read about a different, but similar vintage, Audi Coupe GT. I would wonder about the ease of maintenance and how reliable it would be. Granted, you have the Passat.

Yea I was reading that a swap to them that is relatively cheap and more reliable is the Audi 10Vt?? Couldn't find much about it but I think it was from the really old s4's....?? Who knows the guy who was selling wanted like ~$1000.. it was a 5 spd and had a little cosmetic damage but what the hell....

that is not the S4 engine, which is the 20Vt and is very rare. i believe the motor code for the 10Vt is AAN (maybe 3A?). it's been a while though. they are both very stout and i believe externally wastegated from the factory so lots of easy tweaks for more horsepowars. you can always hit the easy button and just fit engine parts from the RS2 and make an easy 350 to 400 horses.

they are certainly different in good and bad ways. nose heavy but light-ish, 5 cylinder engines that are known to go over 250k without even wearing the cross-hatching off the cylinders and sound like God's trumpet, a weird sharing relationship with VW and porsche parts, and all the handling goodness that comes with crude, mechanical 4WD and struts.

i will say i've only ever seen a Ur-S4 on the road once but it was white, lowered, intercooled and looked amazing. i don't want to know how much the owner spent to get it that way though.

Yea I was on Audizine and saw a pic of the Ur-S4.... my god.....

Well I guess I'll keep entertaining/imagining the idea of one of these.. reading the article for 034 was pretty neat... It may be a PITA to work on but it could definitely become a different flavor to the MM atmosphere.. plus with Blair and Paul being the VW gods they are... Most of that knowledge goes both ways...

I had and old 84 4000s quattro. NA inline 5. Cool car.

But I say you save your money and buy some wheels and suspension for the passat and F the POS old car :thumbup:
