You don't need Android Auto to do any of that. Just connect your phone to your car with Bluetooth and make sure your phone Assistant is trained to your voice in your phone.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

I'll have to play around with this more. I don't usually use the verbal commands to get the Assistant started, but I'd rather not mess with AA if i can get what i want from verbal requests to the Assistant.

I only ever use the Assistant in the car, so I sometimes trip over my own words, but it's actually more intuitive than, say, Alexa... and I'm not just saying that because I left Amazon to work for Google. We're still all Alexa at home.
There may be some small things you do that aren't supported, but I haven't had that yet. I use my steering wheel to change songs on Pandora and my voice to look up POIs while navigating Google Maps. I just asked her to "play music" while running Maps and she said, "Sure, which app would you like to use?" Alexa would try to sell me Prime Music for 10 minutes before doing shit.
Also note that not all cables are equal. Many of the older cables don't support data transfer properly or at all. This probably accounts for your wife's issue. I'd be curious if your phone has issues transferring files with your computer via the same cable. That would narrow things down.
Lastly, my USB port on my Pixel 3 died with a few weeks left in my warranty. It was getting a shitty connection and eventually stopped working 95% of the time. I got a replacement without much hassle, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's a hardware issue with your port. I guess if it's charging, that's less likely.
I think it's likely your AA is just fucked and the only way to unfuck it is a factory reset. Or, just stop using that app because all it really is, is a "low distraction" skin on functions that mostly exist elsewhere.

Did you clean out the massive amount of lint that's likely built up in the USB port? It's a common problem on USB-C and lightning ports. Mine got to the point of not charging at all before I cleaned the port out then it worked perfectly.

pressurized air, or a toothpick and isopropyl alcohol.
it didn't work on mine, but I think that's because it stopped working after I took it into a pool for like 5 min.

i used a staple on my oneplus2 and that helped. I was surprised with the amount of lint in the port. unfortunately i'm not having a problem with cord/port engagement and charging, so i'm going the route of BT Audio with steering wheel controls and trying that out for now. I like the idea of not using cords unless i need to charge the phone.

Upgrade your phone to one with wireless charging and you'll never use a cable again!

Isn't carplay/android auto mostly wireless now?
The Golf R uses wireless carplay right or am I remembering that wrong?
Edit: Apparently I'm remembering wrong. I know BMW offers wireless carplay at least.

What's a carplay? That some sort of app from the 90s?

Only a handful of cars have wireless carplay at this point. The 5 series is one I know of. I believe Kia or Hyundai is offering it as well. Not 100% mainstream at this point.

then you have BMW charging you for CarPlay after a year, right? that's crazy. no other manufacturer is doing that.

Can't wait until manufacturers realize they should be buying the infotainment OS from Google and Apple. Volvo and a few others have, but I want critical mass.

If only head units were standard. All of these things are going to be unusable in 10 years.

Added tint (35% for all windows except the small triangles and windshield). I've never added tint before, but the tint on the rear windows and back on the Ridgeline made me appreciate tint. Not as expensive as I thought.
Aspherical side mirror lenses also came in. I've LOVED these ever since I first saw them on the mk5 r32 I test drove. I had them on the mk6 gti and they're also on the wife's sportwagen
