Lulz yup bought an SM.
No junkyards; built transmission arrives Monday. The new OEM Mazda transmissions have inconsistent quality issues and I was able to get a discount on a well built one.

TL;DR Went to Dominion this past weekend. New PB of 1:34.6 and the tires fell flat on their face. Roasted some pads. Ran a 1:35.0 on Sunday
This was my second time at Dominion. First time it decided to rain 80% of the time and I didn't have proper rain tires so I didn't drive. So, my lack of seat time showed along with my lack of wanting to pay for mounting new tires, but with my great bench racing skills I new a 1:34 was easily achievable and a 1:33-1:32 was a stretch based on last years times. The good thing is I still got 4th out of 7 on Saturday and 3rd out of 7 on Sunday. Top 3 on Saturday were 3 fully prepped BRZ's with aero. On Sunday I managed to beat one of them
For sure time left on the table, but I couldn't put down a solid lap with these tires. I tried pretty hard, but the car would refuse to put power down and actually power oversteer the car and the front end decided to randomly not have any grip on turn in. It kind of hurt my confidence and I was afraid to really get on it. 38 heat cycles now after the weekend and it showed! It was for sure an exercise of car control and it did give me more confidence in correcting the car
Tires are good for another 2-3 events, right? /sarcasm
I also have managed to crumble a set of front G-Loc R18's. I noticed the crumbling started after inspection before the August event. After visual inspection of the pads at the track they were crumbled a good bit but still had like 50% life left. Haven't had time to take the fronts off as I was afraid to at the track of them crumbling, but it sounds like metal on metal squealing. Will grab pics when they are off maybe Thursday or Friday?
So, that leaves me to decide on what pad to go from here.... I went with the G-Loc's to help with consumable cost and to not have such an aggressive initial bite that it instant ABS engagement. All of those held true minus the issue with the crumbling. Hawk DTC-60's were on the backing plate after 3 weekends, but never crumbled. The G-Loc's were so nice and modular and still had plenty of life left after 5 events if they didn't crumble.
Do I try DTC-50's which are Hawk's new endurance pad equivalent? Do I add brake ducts and hope to help with pad crumbling issue? Do I try another pad brand and hope for best of both world's (ie. Pagid as that's the Spec MX-5 brake pad)? G-Loc's were highly regarded, but for some reason aren't happy on my car. I have no issues with braking even after the long 20-30 minute sessions this past weekend at Dominion on ATE fluid without brake ducts. Consistent brake feel and pedal even when the pad was sorta failing which is good..... lol
Next events will be Watkins Glen and VIR, which are both in October. Still deciding on NJMP in October. Looking forward to new tires and pads though!
take a look at the Raybestos ST41, 42, and 43. they come highly regarded, but at a price.

Do well engineered set-and-forget brake ducts exist for the NC miata, or is it a build-it-yourself kind of thing?
My research into cheap-ish track pads for my BRZ led me to 2 pads worth trying

Raybestos crumble too when hot. Seems like a lot of pads that will last a long time will crumble when heated to what is supposed to be a temperature range they should be able to handle. Carbotech does it too...
Brake ducts are easy bolt on item. C6 brake inlet to save money compared to apr, ducting tube, and bolt on apr duct to flow on the rotor. Still a couple hundred bucks just to solve for pad crumbling that shouldn't happen kinda sucks

A side benefit to ducts would be that your wheel bearings and just about anything connected to the hub should last longer.
My personal problem with ducts are that poorly designed (or DIY) ones always seem to need care and feeding, start rubbing, come loose, etc. If you have a well engineered option it seems like a no brainer.

was thinking this too. cooling the hub is going to prolong your bearing and caliper rebuild life since they ultimately heat soak once the rotor gets hot enough. i'm sure it would help rotor scoring too.
i didn't realize the Raybestos will crumble too. is that widely known or just an NC thing? the civic Si crowd (8th gens have horrible brake overheating issues due to the aero) has seemed to like them, but maybe they just don't send it as hard as you do!

Edit: Apparently DTC-50s arent made for the NC anymore so I guess it's back to DTC-60's. Just going to add brake ducts to hopefully make them last longer. Contingency for the pads has my mind changed to just deal with the Hawk's

Did they actually? Will be running the same thing. The rear pads always last like 6+ events which is awesome. Hoping the ducts help extend the front 60's another weekend. That + actually filing for Hawk contingency means mostly free pads all the time. Which I'll deal with the wear if I'm not paying much money
Also, there is a reason why I upgraded to RX8 fronts. So they'll last a bit longer. I can now upgrade the rears to RX8 with ease due to the Spec MX-5 class out. About the only problem child of the NC's is the rear hubs like to fail, although it's not hugely common (not the bearing, the actual hub/flange the studs mount to). They can fail because they are solid rears vs vented, but that's why hubs, bearings, and studs are considered wear items.
Maybe you got a bad batch with the Hawks or something? Take some pics and email them.
My rear pads have lasted a full season and only are like 50% gone. I've gone through 4 sets of new and used Hawks on the front.

2 different sets had the same wear; 3 weekend to the backing plate on the fronts. Pretty normal wear that I've seen and read on most cars
