I'm recognizing the seller's username (RVAE34) as the same guy that built the brown LS7 E39 wagon a few years ago. That was an amazing-quality build, so I'd wager this isn't a polished turd.
Re $40k: I'd take this over any new Euro muscle sedan with puke-inducing styling and 18 obtuse infotainment screens any day of the week. I suspect a lot of others would too, & its likely the only one out there.

It'd be great if you could get me on the short list to buy his old cars for like $15k before they get all 'spensive n stuff

I dont understand why the fuck that 20 year old 7-series, with its shitty steering, is bidding at double what a comparable E39 M5 goes for? What am I missing here? Why not just buy the M5 which is not exactly a small car?

You're not missing anything. The people that shop on BaT are all on crack. That literally makes no sense at that price.

That's it... If you have a niche car, in good shape with low miles it'll likely fetch a fair amount.

Ehhhh it's a little bit of column A and a little of column B here. On the one hand, yeah, if you do the math the car doesn't make "sense". You can buy faster/newer/better handling for less.
On the other, if you're a rabid E38 fan with cash to burn, who are we to balk at you spending it on a supercharged, S62 swapped low mile 1 of 1 beauty? Enthusiast cars are subjective, emotionally-driven purchases. One man's wtf moment is another man's dream ride. FWIW I'd rather have a M5, yeah, but I don't even take the time to bat an eye at most sales, BaT or not these days.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth (02-12-2019, 02:54 PM)Beej Wrote: I've seen that car at C&C and it's pretty damn clean - hopefully the quality of work is as good as it looks. i've followed a couple of this guy's builds; @rvae38. they're all amazing. he's currently doing a Z31 300ZX that should tell alot about the quality of his stuff. $58k for the M7 on BaT. I'm still not at all shocked or mystified by this:
Low mile (rare) white/caramel (extra rare) supercharged S62 swap (megabucks, awesome, makes the car 1 of ~1 in a very desirable way) top shelf build. Even has iDrive infotainment installed for retrofuture factory finish (admittedly not sure if this is a bonus but you know it got somebody's rocks off). Add all that up and a vehicle such as this was going to cost some monies. More if you built it from scratch. You get fractions on the dollar back if you sell after a build, yeah, but you're also on crack if you dilute a build like this to thinking "this car has 4 doors and a v8 you can get a cheaper CTS-V at Carmax why buy this" because they're the same thing, right? Especially to modern-classic BMW fans? What I find funny is that we don't give two shits if a bonafide classic car like a '63 Corvette or an old Porsche sells for lots of money, b/c we already accept that they are sought-after items with a large pool of buyers vying for limited examples. But if a car is....I dunno, new enough? And has a very top shelf, high quality, performance & aesthetic build done to it, it's crackpipe for similar money as the above classic (even though they're much better & usable cars and can be just as cool & even more unique) because all of a sudden we start comparing it to xyz new or other car. This one totally stands on its own as worth the outlay in my mind.

But the fact that there was rust, paint chips, some stuff didn't work (sunroof) to me says that there are probably other little things (or possibly big things) that the previous owner either let slide or missed entirely in the build. If it was a full on restomod with all of the swaps done and everything was literally perfect on the car I could maybe see close to $60k. It shouldn't be sugar coated though, someone just paid an extremely outlandish amount of money for another guy's project car (albeit a well done one).

its rare, and its interesting, and well done. but i still think you have to be a BIG 7 series fan to actually want to pay that. without the BAT hype machine i doubt he could have found a buyer willing to pay 40 for it, which is still respectable IMO. keep in mind here, that's not a cheap car to maintain, or a cheap powertrain to care for. running costs will make it a toy.
i bet its a thrill to drive, but the thing about people paying big money for performance classics like a vette or 911 is that those are legacy cars and have a major motorsports heritage. the 7 series really doesn't carry that history...it was always just at the pointy end of the sporty luxury segment.
