Every more modern car I've owned with traction/stability control has been like this. Pressing the button once will turn things "back" to a point, but it takes a press-and-hold to let you have full access to the powerz.

My 3 minutes of googling it indicates that VW makes it typical VW difficult to accomplish; basically you have to put it into dyno mode

That disables as soon as the car moves.

AFAIK, the only way other than the below is coding it.

Traction Modes

On - This is the standard setting with ASR (your traction control and ESC (all your braking and stability assistance features) fully activated.

ASR Off - Press the bottom right button near the shifter for a couple seconds. The MFD will display "ASR Deactivated" or something like that. This switches off traction control but leaves your stability features fully active. This is most useful if you need a little wheel slip to get started in the snow, if you're trying to rock the car to get it unstuck from snow or mud, or any other reasons you need the power wheels to be able to spin.

ESC Sport Holding down the button for longer will bring up something like "ESC Sport Activated: Driving Control Reduced" in the MFD screen. This reduces how aggressive the stability control features are and will allow you to have a little more fun before they intervene. This mode also switches off ASR, so be prepared for lots of tire squeal if you're still on all seasons.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

+1. Never had this issue on my old GTI. Plenty of North East snowstorms, no problem.

Holding the button down does not allow wheel spin. Maybe some chirping and squealing, but I assure you my car will not break the wheels loose.

Also the manual mk7.5 cars don't rev above 4k and build 0 boost when in neutral or with the clutch in if you're stationary. I held the button and let it turn off everything and it still cut power.

I'm not an idiot. I have been foot to floor and dumped the clutch in the pouring rain and all it does it spin for a fraction of a second and cut power. I've spun a LITTLE bit leaving a stop light at full tilt in the rain, but mainly you just get wheel hop and then it rains it in quickly.

Joey, you're more than welcome to come do a burnout in my car and I'll eat my hat.

How did we go from, muscling out of snow to, dumping the clutch and attempting burnouts. These are not the same thing.

Getting back into my spot on the street. Got stuck on snow that was pushed up by the plow. Had no trouble actually driving anywhere.

So.... This car can't stay warm. If I put the heat in anything above 2/6, the temp will work it's way back to zero. It will get up to temp if I don't run the heat, but in anything colder than 40 degrees ambient, using the heat slowly brings it back down from 195 to zero. I've been observing this for weeks now. I've never had a car struggle to stay warm like this. Is it normal?

The car was at 195 after 5 minutes of running and I turned on the heat full blast which dropped it right back down to 140.
Sitting in traffic. The heat is on 3/6 and the car has been running for 17 minutes according to the dash and the temp just now peaked over 170. It's 21 degrees outside. No wind.

I figure a bad thermostat, it wouldn't ever warm up at all, but it warms up just fine with the heat off.

I expect the 190-170 fluctuation to MAYBE be because it's a real gauge and not buffered, so please don't flame me there. Perhaps it's my short, stop and go commute. I always figured the car gets hotter when it isn't moving.

This. When it's Really cold, unless you've driven a while (20-min+) it'll drop to being colder. Mine and my wife's car does this.

The heater acts as a mini radiator, so its pulling heat out of the engine like a radiator would even if the thermostat is closed.

My jeep had a broken radiator fan that I was too lazy to fix. It would overheat in traffic in the summer, and I'd turn the heat on and the temps would drop right down.

Story time :

That reminded me of the time I drove cross country with my mom in 2005. We were on our way to Vegas from LA and going uphill near a bunch of sand on both sides (death valley?) with the A/C cranked up because it was so hot. I was passing a bunch of people who had their windows down and thought, 'wow, why would they do that' (it was 117* outside). I then saw my coolant temp Guage start to rise. I told my mom that we needed to turn the a/c off and roll down the windows, she questioned it, but we did that. The temp Guage stopped rising, but it wasn't going down... Then I told her that we needed to turn the heat on full blast. She freaked, but as I did it I explained why and the temp Guage finally started to fall back to normal. I could have sworn that the heat coming from the vents was slightly cooler than the heat coming from the windows...

Yeah, I get how the heater core is a mini radiator, but I've never had a car that couldn't hold temp. I remember my Tacoma in zero degree weather keeping heat easily. Maybe it's just an efficiently cooled 4 cylinder thing.
