As it stands, the video footage you posted going through all the "mud pits" on Flagpole is considered "Off-trail" and illegal as defined by the Forest Service. I've had several encounters up there being followed by Game Wardens with verbal warnings that evening going through the pits to get to the other side is illegal. I know it's tempting to whip through there, but as a friendly ask for the wider 4x4 community, any publicly available footage of off-trail activities is the fastest way to closure of public lands and access for all. Please be mindful and cognizant of these activities in the future. +1
Unfortunately a lot of this falls on deaf ears for people getting out there their first few times. On recent trips I lead, it was hard to get people to not do stupid stuff and not tear up the land.

Definitely unfortunate. The message will be loud and clear the next time you go out for a day of fun and are greeted by this:
The trail network used to be huge about 10 years ago. It's been slowly and slowly disappearing as people go off-trail and abuse the land. I'm all for a little romp through some puddles, but technically all those mud pits up there are in fact off-trail and illegal.

You just need to know. Remember that these are forest fire trails first and NOT trails for having fun on and it's easy to figure out what's legal and what isn't. If it's something that causes damage or worsens the trail conditions, it's probably not legal. Most every side trail that has whoops/bumps or hill climbs is off limits.
The way you know is go with someone experienced and listen to what they say. That’s a load of sh*t. Sorry, give people real ways to know. There has to be guidelines or is this more “hey you can play on this but it’s not technically legal; so don’t mess it up and everyone looks the other way”.

Hey, I don't make the rules. Blame the government or go somewhere other than a national forest to off road.

Mostly through word of mouth and learning by going with experienced drivers. See if you can wheel with a real org like Core4x4 or Shenandoah Valley Crawlers, or whatever they're called (Colton's Group)

No, DJ. It's not.
Get on Google Maps and follow the forest road via GPS. If your little icon is off the legal forest road your ass is off-trail. That's pretty damn clear.
If you want more "technical" documentation get familiar with the USDA MVUM (Motor Vehicle Use Map). This will tell you what are legally the roads you can access as well as other roads that rotate with seasons for hunting or fire fighting.
All Maps:
https://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/program...maps.shtml
GW&J Map:
https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/gwj/maps-...ev3_000547
Example: Flagpole knob. If you're off dicking around anywhere but FR85A you're illegally off trail.
Example 2: The hill climb everyone tears up at the Union Springs entrance. Is that Union Springs road? No. It's illegal.

Perhaps we should make a "So you want to go Wheeling?" Thread that explains these things, and the general dos, don'ts, tips and tricks for wheeling?
