Totally different. Even in your 'opionion'. Nobody's deceiving anyone about the nature of bitcoin (or eth, or major altcoin). "Yeah man, it's just some math proofs." The Mortgage Crisis was active deceit of investors with the assistance of shit-ass government policy in the name of "equality".
Mt. Gox isn't a good example, it was a "bank" that was managed shittily. It's not like somebody hauled off with everyone's bitcoins, it's that they had shady and shitty management practices.
I have no money in BTC or ETH or anything else. If you want to buy some, you should know what you're getting into, know the history and the reasoning, and do it. But if you're just like "HEY THESE TULIPS ARE SELLING LIKE HOTCAKES!" then maybe, you know, don't.
Except they did though:
" On 19 June 2011, a security breach of the Mt. Gox bitcoin exchange caused the nominal price of a bitcoin to fraudulently drop to one cent on the Mt. Gox exchange, after a hacker allegedly used credentials from a Mt. Gox auditor's compromised computer to transfer a large number of bitcoins illegally to himself. He used the exchange's software to sell them all nominally, creating a massive "ask" order at any price. Within minutes the price corrected to its correct user-traded value." You realize that's the equivalent of someone hacking the NYSE, buying up thousands of shares of AMZN after changing the share price to $0.01 (and being unable to track where they ended up) and then allowing the stock to rebound to its normal share price. Regulation is not a bad thing when dealing with currency / investments on this scale. Like, it's staggering to me to think about how that happened.
That along with yeah, mismanagement.
That was my point though, these "exchanges" that have been set up are run by God knows who and it seems like for the most part have absolutely no oversight or regulation. So yeah, agreed that if you're gonna get into it right now, until something changes, know what the risks are and keep your coin on a hard drive that's not connected to the internet and in a Faraday cage or something

It's amazing how much faith people put into using the exchanges as a bank. That hasn't been a good idea since ever. Bitcoin is more like gold and guns; lock it up yourself.

I've put a few hundred in the bitcoin market to see what happens. My brother is guiding me through this (he watches actual markets daily anyway) so he has some experience with investing. So far so good. I doubt I'll invest anymore money and just ride out as much profit as possible with what's in there.

I think this is the biggest block for it being treated a proper currency vs a commodity (as it is currently).
A Swiss National Cryptocurrency Exchange would be fucking tiiiiiitties. But I doubt any nation with a state central bank wants to see that.

Any recommendations for a lightweight android stock chart / watcher app? My favorite, "Stock Watcher" seems to have stopped being developed and working. I just want something that plots SMA correctly, the 5 others I've tried so far do not.

Actually me everyday.
Luckily my brother guessed right and we pulled into alt coins just in time. Made some good bank profits today in the crypto market. Hopefully, it continues until the next bitcoin surge. Then move to all to btc again. Then move back to alt coins near btc peak, rinse and repeat.
Late to post, but I know a good amount about Bitcoin. The price of gold fluctuated wildly immediately after the dollar was taken off the gold standard. Eventually the trade in actual gold came to more or less a halt, and people had gold that wanted it. It has more or less kept pace with inflation at some intrinsic value that doesn't mean shit except to what the believers think it should be. I think that this is sort of what is going to happen with bitcoin. You have a limited supply store of value, that is intended to be deflationary at approximately 4 percent a year. Eventually it will stabilize at a value of what people think it should be worth. I won't pretend to know what that dollar figure is, but it's not there yet.
Keep in mind, probably 1/3 of previously mined bitcoin is already lost forever. Own one. You'll do alright, and won't lose your house if it shits the bed.

Just to be clear, hacking an exchange is not the same as hacking bitcoin. I would only use very reputable online wallets for only the bitcoin you need to have in circulation at any given time. Offline storage is the way to go for long term storage.

When your Uber drives starts trying to sell you on how solid Bitcoin is and how you should invest, you know it's a poor idea.
