Finally got some time to myself this weekend, so I went for a two hour ride out of and around the city. I didn't venture to any twisty bits, partly because I was lazy and partly because I wanted to avoid any summer/eclipse traffic, but I did manage to get some solid driving in on all kinds of roads... and even did some grocery shopping. You can check out a video of some tunnel action (with crappy audio - thanks google) at the link below. Everything was within the speed limit, I promise.

The drives much better since I had the front calipers replaced. I'm pretty sure there was a significant drag on one rotors and a slight drag on the other. The car floats quite a bit at higher speeds, but that's part side aero and part tires. It definitely makes things interesting when you feel like you need two hands at 70 mph. Nevermind the fact you have to look up at GTI drivers because the car is so low. I've been considering tinting the windows for awhile, so that's probably something I'll do next spring.

I've always liked the rally look and recent auctions have had me looking into adding lights. Part of me thinks it's total euro ricer, but then I tell myself this is some James Bond shit and I want it. I'm not sure I'm ready to go full stupid, but I don't think it matters if I did because the car is already an outlaw (914 nosy, 911S engine, 924 doors, etc). Am I crazy enough to drill holes in my hood??

Like this? Honestly, I'd like to work towards doing a few days of the Quick Tour class of Targa Newfoundland. I could run the car as-is in this class, but it would be cool to work towards something that would be a little more suited to drive for days on end.

Exactly. That's one of his Safari builds. I think he is up to 8-9 of them and started a nice little business. He's got a waiting list of people/911s already selected.

don't safari it - go Targa style, or tarmac rally if you want to call it that. rally lights, flaps, maybe a roof vent.

the safari cars are cool only for the motorsports pedigree, and only if you drive it on dirt all the time and actually use those 75-series all terrains. otherwise you're just driving a 911 with its handling completely ruined for pavement. the actual 911 rally cars never looked that retarded, Porsche only make the 911 into an exo-caged monster truck for the Africa rallys. it always amuses me how the safari cars have caught on, considering how ridiculous they look out of the motorsports context.

the normal rally cars looked a lot tamer.

here's the same car in tarmac form - love it. very purposeful, but not "HEY I'M PRETENDING I'M A RACE CAR"

here's the final caveat - you need to actually DRIVE IT to maximize the cool factor

Tarmac rally is where I'm thinking of heading. None of these cars have the crappy US bumpers, so maybe the first thing to think about is getting rid of them. It's possible to look good with them (first pic I posted) but they look so much better without. It's already got underbumper fog lights, so maybe replacing the nose and moving the wiring into the trunk for a set of lights could work. The rear defogger has never worked, despite replacing solenoids, so maybe that's a good time to get it better looked at.

I'd like to leave the wheels and suspension alone, but it floats pretty good at highway speeds. It's not a big problem, but if I want to money pit the thing this is where to spend it. Maybe I'll just put some flaps and baseboard graphics on to pretend it's got a lot of money dumped into it?

On the driving bit - I need to find actual events that force me to get out of the city. There is no car culture in Seattle proper, so everything is a drive outside the city in the early mornings. I'd rather find some family-friendly events that let you unwind the car a bit, but without being timed. The real problem is I don't want to have to choose between my kid and the car, because there's no way to get him safely in the car. The wife doesn't care if I do car stuff, but she ain't gonna bring a support vehicle just so my son can come with. I you really want to feel sorry for me, I'll tell you I got fly fishing gear for Christmas and I haven't used it yet.  Sad

Good luck with that. One of the reasons I got rid of the vette and got the E36.  I wanted something my wife/son could also come when we did events like MM car show/cars and coffee/drive to the mountains.  Now that he is born I kind of want something safer than the E36 and have debated selling it, no way I would trust a 1970s built ANYTHING with my kid, even a 911.

Yeah, even if I couild fit a carseat I wouldn't put him in it. The car is really small, even compared to things like GTIs and Minis. There are just too many 6,0000 lb vehicles on the road for cabin entry not to be the outcome of an accident. Replacing the car isn't an option I can consider for some personal reasons I'd rather not get into here, so I'm kinda stuck. #firstworldproblems

We're gonna start looking at a local kart league next year. Hopefully that'll satisfy the itch for kid stuff and then he'll be old enough that I don't feel like I'm missing out by attending a car event without him. Either that or I need to change a lot more diapers to convince the wife she needs to follow me in the swagger wagon.

Don't drill your current hood.  Get a different one, paint it black and drill away

So I Fb messaged the shop I take the car to and said I wanted to start moving to tarmac rally, including a few pictures from this thread. His first question is what I thought of the ducktail and then said he's a CIBIE dealer and they are definitely able to "add a couple well placed lights." I need to catch up with him in person or over the phone about options, because I want to get rid of the impact bumpers but all the pictures in this thread have entirely different front ends to achieve their style (the blue one above is similar to my front end). I'm pretty sure I cannot afford to completely redo the front end. Ducktails seem to be somewhat reasonably priced, so I may start with new bumpers and a ducktail.

Also, I've watched that lotion (or whatever) bottle way too many times. It's mesmerizing.
