I like loud noises, so I bought a Roush intake for this thing. It was used, it was cheap, and I need to get some filter cleaner soon. It sounds amaaaazing, particularly in tunnels around DC

Heh, I mean, all I've done is a head unit, speakers and intake.
Oh, and I guess FlimFlam is going to tune it this weekend. :dunno:

In celebration of the truck turning 60k miles (and also not driving as well as it used to) I spent today getting some maintenance items checked off my list.
Ford claims spark plugs are a 100k item... FlimFlam told me they are not. I was having some weird "vaguely misfire-y" feelings particularly cruising in a higher gear and adding throttle. Kevin > Ford.
Runs way better now. Fun quirk: I ordered 8 Motorcraft plugs through Amazon and they came from a Ford dealer. Opened everything up and there were only 7 (in two boxes of 4). So, had to run to Advance and buy another.
Also did half of the brakes. Had to first buy a bigger jack that could lift the truck high enough, because this thing has some mondo suspension travel compared to a car. Thanks, Harbor Freight.
The front pads were worn pretty thin, and rotors were rusted to the hubs which took some creativity to undo. I used some of my Hawk Bucks (yay, contingency!) and had them send me Hawk LTS pads for front and rear.
This pad was the worst offender:
I have the stuff to do the rears but was running out of daylight and motivation, so I'll get to 'em soon. When I had the truck at Ford for an oil change, they told me the rear pads were lower (by about 3mm) compared to the fronts... so I suspect even more thrilling photos will follow.

Pete has/had great success with the LTS's on his egoboost FX4.
weirdly, i ran them on the front (rears are drums) of my xterra and they were hot garbage. grindy, squealing coal-dust monsters. bedded/installed just fine on brand new rotors with new fluid, and never had an issue with Hawk's products otherwise. ended up getting Akebono Pro-ACT ceramics as replacements and they've been what i hoped the LTS were.
hope mine were a fluke!

Did the rear pads and I suppose the dealership wasn't lying over the summer when they said they were down to 3mm back then. Note to self: listen more.
That was the worst offender, the other pads all had a little bit of material left but not much. I left the old rotors installed because 1) I was kind of rushing to finish the job and get on with my Saturday and 2) Rock Auto sent me only one of the two rear rotors. I think the other one is a third front rotor. So, I need to call and bitch at them. Thankfully, once I do get the correct rotors, it's a pretty easy process to pull everything again and install them.
One of the rear caliper slide bolts on each caliper has this goofy "vibration dampener" screwed onto it. Made me look at things all funny until I figured out that it unscrews by hand and allows you to get a wrench on there.
It stops WAY better now. If I get a minute in the coming weeks, I have a ton of unopened DOT4 brake fluid and I should really bleed the system. Would be great if I could get at the bleed valves without yanking the wheels - I think the rear is doable but not sure about the front.

Finally cleaned the heinously dirty air filter with a K&N kit. The water ran a disturbing shade of dark gray for a while when I was at that step in the process.
Between the cleaned filter, new plugs, and fresh brakes... I forgot how good this truck was to drive. Been commuting in it the past couple days while I wait on E46 parts and the difference in before and after is amazing. Good reminder to keep up on routine maintenance.
Only other thing I ought to do here soon is transmission fluid. Maybe transfer case and diffs, maybe.

Just do it.
Doing a fluid flush on an auto trans is awful. Outsource that one.

Don't flush... just drain + fill + new filter. Flushing is a scam anyways... most torque converters operate in bypass mode at idle, so a machine flush is not going to get the extra fluid anyways.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

So far, they've been great for all the surprise brake-checking that is part of my commute. Haven't done a tow with them on both axles yet, just on the front, but they were solid for that too.

Jake, did you have any issue the LTS pad for the rear of your truck? I can't seem to find an approved fitment for mine anywhere. Would you mind sharing the part number if you still have it?

Oh, also, I took the truck for an oil change on Friday, which is an entirely uninteresting topic for a post. Although, thanks to coupons that come in the mail, paying $30 for a 7-quart oil change and VA safety inspection was kinda nice. Thank you, Ted Britt Ford.
While I was there, I drove a new F250 Lariat. Wanted to see how they compared to the outgoing generation and if I'd want to keep them in mind for a potential future upgrade (not anytime soon, don't get any ideas). Some basic impressions:
- Damn this sits high up
- This particular truck needs running boards, stat
- Which dealership employee ordered a Lariat and didn't specify heated seats?
- Why don't all Lariats have heated seats?
- The switches for the headlights, memory seats, door locks and adjustable pedals are down by your left knee, it's a small ergonomics nightmare in an otherwise-nice interior
- I like the rest of the interior - nice big Sync 3 screen, easy to use climate controls, big glove-friendly buttons, many large cupholders sized appropriately for Monster cans and 40's of OE
- The 6.7L diesel is pretty quiet
- Plenty of power and torque, it scoots along even at low RPM in a higher gear
- Rides pretty stiff when completely unloaded (which I expected over my F150), would probably be great with 8k+ lbs on the back of it
So, yeah, it's a truck. The cab is shared with the F150, only difference really is that the F150 has a console/floor shifter and the Super Duties have a column shifter, which I prefer. The floor shifter is HUGE.
Not making any moves soon - coming up on one year with the F150 and I still really, really like it - but good to know that the "next step up" option is a nice one. Also, new trucks are really damn expensive and the incentives are massive. All of the Lariats have a MSRP of high $50k's (to option one the way I'd want it, roughly $57k?) but then they have so many discounts that get combined, THEN you can add X-Plan through your employer. They had a black 6.2L gasser F250 Lariat that the salesman used for the sake of numbers with me... MSRP was $52k and he got it to $37k before I would have started negotiating at all (and before X-Plan). I bet I could have been a jerk and taken it home for close to $32k OTD, had I wanted that particular truck.
Just insane how much markup they have on 'em.

Hmm, odd. Their website is so, so awful to try and search through. They have so many options listed for "Ford 150" versus "Ford Truck F150" and then you have to pick how many lugs and drive wheels you have (every 08-14 F150 is a six-lug... seven lug was on the 2001 generation). It's miserable.
I just checked my receipt from Hawk and I ordered the 705's, which did fit. I don't think Ford changed anything about the brakes between model years, unless the EcoBoost has a different brake specified in the rear.
