Tyler you need to have some confidence in yourself. You're a smart guy. With the proper reading and patience you should be able to put it back together yourself. I've seen you put bikes together and yes they are less parts but same idea. Your crazy OCD will help to make sure everything goes together the right way

sorry to hear man...if it makes you feel any better, i've been down the engine destruction road myself thanks to some oiling problems, and made a similar mistake in the shop i dealt with. that was like 10 years ago and it still stings. yeah, 3rd party insurance works really well at taking your money in exchange for nothing most of the time. F them and F the shop that boned you over as well...i'd feel no guilt in dropping a deuce on any ratings/feedback sites for their business. don't go near them again for the favors they did you.

i would take solace in the fact that the LS is so ubiquitous that there's probably more shops that can rebuild one in their sleep than any other engine type in the country save the 302. i don't think i'd take the job on yourself if this is your first time and you want it reliable, but regardless of who does the work if you lunched a bearing i'd echo what Adam said and have the block stripped and punched out. get yourself some oversize bearings + pistons and i'd get those LS3 heads since you don't know what kind of shrapnel might have gotten up into the stock heads. i'd also get a new timing chain to go with the new oil pump too.

being a big fan of the Roadkill/Engine Masters series on yout00bs, i've noticed they love blueprintengines.com which has LS crates starting at like $6K for a base 364 6.0 that makes 470hp. might be worth a look with that 50,000 mile warranty.

i'd keep the car like you said and make a long term project out of it. they're not getting any less rare and they still do what they do best (high speed grand touring) better than almost anything of that age/price. make it yours :thumbup:

That's the good thing about this situation is that there is plenty of aftermarket support for the LS, motor rebuilds and ideas are abundant and it seems like there are new vendors everywhere I turn selling pretty nice builds. I've heard blueprintengines is good, I'll see what it's like. I think that the rebuild may be the cheapest option and if I do a cam upgrade and an ls3 swap i may be in it for less than 6 but until I open up the motor and see what this is going to take, I have no idea. The OCD and peace of mind in me says go for a newer motor but there is something alluring about doing a rebuild and learning through it. I'm still trying to get a good way to get the motor back to my garage. I'm such a newb at this, I'm googling ways to A hoist an engine and B safely transport it on the flatbed of a truck.

3 friends can lift an engine into the back (you and 1 friend can do it but its easier with 3 people). LS motors are strong enough to sit on the oil pan, but may be nice to have a pillow underneath it or use wood block underneath the motor mount arms to help support. Then use straps and its easy.

If the oil pan is on the motor, I'd assume you can just sit it in a tire and strap it down.

on a stand, in the garage. they took out the tranny, driveshaft and everything attached with a few boxes of bolts and said "here". charged me 1400 to completely disassemble my car. whatever. i must have done something really fucked up lately. anyways. thus begins the research. still havent decided exactly what I'm gonna do but I got a few books im gonna read this week so even if i have a shop do it, i can talk the talk.

Just remember, buy once cry once. Especially true for a build you're planning on committing to the grave. It might take you a little longer to put together but will be well worth it in the long run to use the best parts you can afford
