What hobbies do you have OTHER than cars?
#1
I think it's always interesting when a group of people knows each other due to a common interest. You never really expect anything more than that out of the people. It's very easy to be surprised by what OTHER things people like to do.

So, what do you like to do other than cars?

I've got the regular things like playing golf and playing drums, but I also used to have my own webshow when I was younger. Around the time I was 12 or 13, I joined the website Twitch.tv, but it was called Justin.tv back then. I was one of the first couple hundred people on there really and I was pretty successful with it. It kind of took up a lot my life. I was pretty nerdy back then. I had a blast and even had around $1300 donated to me by one guy that REALLY liked my show. I also chatted a few times with founder, Justin Kan, and now he's a multi-millionaire. I still have the pages of e-mails from me arguing with the admins about features. Most of those admins are long gone now and the website is HUGE. It was a blast and I miss it some times, but I've grown up and moved on. Now that website is nothing but professional gamers and such doing it for the money. Kind of sad.

Right now the main things are:

Snowboarding
Photography
Brewing Beer/Other alcohols
Some gaming, not as much as I used to

I used to play guitar. I haven't done much with that recently. I definitely want to get a digital piano at some point and learn that.
Skimboarding during the summer when I'm at the beach. I would do this all the time if I lived closer. Love it.

Although to be honest with a full time grown up job, an infant, and a master's degree to finish the case is easily made that all my automotive hobby consists of is "Bench Racing", "Bein' a hater" and "wishing I had more money".

Good topic, Taylor.

My hobbies aside from cars, at the moment, tend to involve cooking/grilling delicious food, drinking good beer and wine (and trying to learn why it's good/I like it), and taking on these mud runs/obstacle courses that I curse myself for during, but love after the fact.

I'd like to start biking as a form of exercise. Need to figure out my "get back in shape" plan so that'll help.

I used to be a big fine-arts-nerd but MM ruined me. All of middle/high school was spent playing instruments and singing in choirs. Oh, and I was one of the theatre techies who ran the lights/sound/everything else. It was a blast, but cars are more fun.

Honestly the automotive hobby eats far too much of my time. I am involved in too much of the hobby. I am active in all of these concurrently; but need to pick 2.

There are plenty of things I find very interesting, but simply don't have the budget to get into, even casually. In high school I was really into mountain biking, photography, skiing and guns. I still like all those things but with all my extra money flowing right into the E36's veins I don't have any cash left for a new bike/camera or even a ski trip. I've really enjoyed golf the few times I've gone and think I could get into that too if it wasn't so catastrophically expensive.

I guess the only hobby I actively pursue is beer drinking and cooking. I love chasing down new beers, which is pretty easy in NOVA, and I've spent the past 3ish years honing my Chili and Filet recipes down to a literal science. I'm trotting the chili out for a Super Bowl party and I think for Valentine's Day I'm going to try Sous Vide Tenderloin.

90% of my hobby energy goes straight into the car though. For the past couple of years it's mostly been saving money and then spending a couple weeks under it to fix shit. Hopefully this year involves a bit more driving and a bit less wrenching.

I wouldn't mind getting into cooking more next year when I have a real kitchen off campus. I LOVE grilling, so I want to expand on that a bit.

Golf isn't that expensive after you get some clubs and can find some cheaper courses. Don't feel obligated to get a cart. Walking isn't that bad. You really only need to spend what you want for clubs. The price for old clubs drop very quickly.

Tools/home improvement
Guns
Defensive Tactics
Working out
Grilling

I've always been into guns but my interests have changed from "collecting boom sticks" to becoming proficient with them. This also goes hand in hand with the defensive tactics. My department and the local police academy offer a good deal of training in advanced defensive tactics, armed encounters, active shooter training, weapons retention techniques etc, etc. My Chief is pretty gung-ho about it and will let us attend any of the training we want. If I hadn't accepted another job a few weeks ago I'd only be a weeks worth of classes away from firearms instructor/armorer and about two weeks away from instructor for advanced defensive tactics.

What I should spend more time on:

Aviation: I looove airplanes/airports/air traffic control. I used to be an aviation major at my last school so it used to also be my career. I need to keep up with it and buy my first damn RC plane/jet and go to more air shows and keep up with new tech in the field.

Astronomy: I have a VERY expensive telescope i got for a birthday that I'm not using. Its at my parents house collecting dust.

What I actually do for the most part:
Eat, sleep, lab, class, work, homework, lab, sleep, work. Not joking, its all i do.

Cars: I'll squeeze in time to try and fiddle with something on it, but since its winter i spend most of my "car time" reading one of the many BMW forums.

Travel: I love going places and I was actually trying to see if somehow i could plan day trips every other weekend to a place within 6 hours of hburg and go see somewhere new. Its not too expensive depending on what attraction i choose and I love being in a new place. If anyone wants to take a road trip i am so down. All the cities I've been to are Charlotte, NYC (tryna do this again), Atlantic City, Florida (Jacksonville, palm bay, all of south florida except Miami cause my parents detest crowds) too much, Baltimore, some amish bush town in Pennsylvania, random parts of NOVA, DC, va beach, Charlottesville, FredVegas, Lynchburg. Ready to explore more.

Geology: The best major there is in college. Can't fReAkiNg wait for our field trips this semester. Minerals I think would be my favorite little area of Geology but its a tough call between earthquakes, volcanoes, hydrology and maybe even paleontology. I still have more to learn so we'll see how this favorites list works out.

Lol stick around the forum enough and come to enough events you'll catch on to everything. Usually they aren't as funny as we make them to be.

Isn't that the whole poing of an inside joke. Totally not funny unless you get it. Maybe once I have a car, and can afford to miss work, I'll come do some auto-crossing and stuff.

I think we need more MM offroad trips Big Grin

I was actually talking to a guy I met on TacomaWorld who goes to JMU and he said he had heard about MM but thought it was nothing but ricers. I had to educate him. Maybe we can get him next semester or something.
