We're going to be relocating, but the company that is doing it does not ship firearms or ammo. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience flying with long guns or has shipped guns they own with a company. We will be flying via commercial airline, so stashing them in the trunk and driving isn't really an option. Yes, the internet has answers... I'm looking for personal experience and recommendations. Thanks in advance.

I worked for an airline for about 3 years, but its been a few years ago, so I'm not sure what changed. Basically any gun is no problem as long as it is not loaded, and is in a case designed for carry weapons (can't just be in your checked bags zipped compartment). The ammo has to be in a case designed for carrying ammo, or in the original container from the manufacturer.
It used to be you had to present the weapon(s) to the ticket agent, but I dont know what the deal is now, or how accurate any of that info is.

well UPS will ship guns and ammo. I don't know why you couldn't ship them to yourself. :dunno:
Normally you have to ship a gun to a FFL, but that's for sales, right?

Yeah, I knew I could ship them to myself. I more looking for personal experience with these sort of things, like "OMG don't ship UPS they effed my shotgun up!"
I'd also be interested in recommendations for packing. I mean I know I could hard case it, but I'd rather not spend a shit ton of money just to spend a shit ton of money sending it. I'd like the most cost effective (emphasis on effective) way of doing it.

didn't it come with a hard case? Just check it at the airport.

No. It came in a cardboard box. I also have my grandfather's gun that only has the equivalent of a burlap and flannel case.

Still, go buy some wal-mart hard cases, check them. I think you are overthinking this. Ought to have halfway decent cases (not burlap and flannel) for your gats anyway.

ok so no PERSONAL experience, other than experience with baggage and experience with UPS as well as shipping odd car parts and ammo. *I* would ship them. In a gun sock or soft case, nice and tight with foam, cardbord scraps, bubble wrap, whatever, in one of these babys

I was told today that if we pack something ourselves, we have to leave it unsealed so they can inspect/inventory. I get the impression this isn't their first rodeo. :lol:
The more I think about it, and I do agree I might be overthinking it, the less I want to take them to an airport. We have a host of bags and cats to carry with us as it is.

I traded a guy a rifle for a set of wheels once and he was in Washington state. Its been a loooooong time, but if I remember right I put it in its hard case, got a big cardboard box the case would fit in, wrapped it all up and did a little special paperwork at the UPS drop off location. I may have had to ship it to the guy's local gun dealer, can't really remember. I don't see why you couldn't UPS it to yourself if you're moving though.

I personally wouldn't try to bring a firearm into an airport nowadays for any reason, I feel like it would be a lot less hassle but a little more expensive to ship it.

packing a gun in your checked baggage is an awesome way to make sure they dont lose your bags. I have read of frequent travellers who travel with track&field starters guns for this reason.
although a long gun probably wouldnt fit in your suitcases, either way checking a gun at an airport isnt a big deal.
Turns out I was misinformed. The moving company will move long guns, just not handguns.
Now on to getting the cats on the plane...
