Wife's been pregnant sick with a cold the last week so I booked us a quick getaway to Charleston.  She already got us reservations at our favorite brunch spot High Cotton.  The menu:

been there a few years ago (still have the match box somewhere, heh).  nothing on the menu is bad.  i think i got shrimp and grits and its excellent.

Fleet Landing in Charleston is also an excellent spot for lunch, especially for seafood. The building was an old Navy procurement building or something along those lines. I believe one of their cooks was on an episode of Chopped too, pretty cool

Day 4, we hop on the train to Alicante with my sister in law, I swim in the Mediterranean (cross that one off the list!), it was cold as a motherfucker and I was HONGRY. 

So we hit up this literal hole in the wall. No kidding it smelled like piss in the street just outside, and graffiti in the square just below said (forgive my poor translation) "I shoved Franco's skull up my ass". 

We are met by this old fucker who does NOT habla inglés, fortunately my sister in law speaks it just fine in her weird lispy Galacian accent, and manages to order for us.

He first brings some fucking like, tiny eels and shrimp in olive oil. "Anguilas al Ajillo" basically eels and garlic. Fucking delicious.


Course two, Jamón ibérico and sheep's cheese. 




Holy crap. I know it, like, doesn't look like much. Ham and cheese, BFD. 

Nah man. It was...almost unbelievable that something so simple could taste so. goddam. good. There was a little crushed tomato with herbs and olive oil on the side, and two different cheeses though I couldn't tell you what they were. For dessert they served some kind of fragile layered cake with a thin custard on top, no idea what it was, didn't get a picture of it because it didn't last long enough. It was outgoddamstanding.

We had other food while we were there. It all pales in comparison to this fucking HAM. Weird how different the "same" things taste. Never had such tasty grapes in my entire life, and who knew raspberries could taste sweet and floral instead of just kind of bitter. 

A+, 10/10, worth spending 3 hours in a fucking customs line in Jersey for.

I ate a bigass chocolate croissant with espresso for breakfast no less than twice, but I'm a big fat fuckin' american, and I always seemed to eat alone, soooooo, cant' say really. 

They do keep a weird fuckin' eating schedule. And, like, "Times things are open". Ask yourself: Is <place> going to be open right now?

I think its just more of their business schedule. Its like "do I feel like working today? no, I am le tired" and then the shop does not open. Food in Spain does not disappoint though.

Speaking of good eats, and Spain, my wife bought us a wine paired dinner at some trendy spanish restaurant downtown tonight, but the whole thing was just an advertisement for the winery that came to the event and the food was cold and I liked the cheapest wine the best ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I remain a rube, I suppose.

Well, I got back from Chicago last night and I have a travel hangover. Although it could be from drinking Mon through Wednesday as well. The main eating highlight was obviously beef. Chicago is a beef town after all. 

First lunch stop was a local chain called Portillo's. Not only are they one of our customers, but its been around since the early 60s and now has 50 locations with more opening. I had to get an Italian Beef sandwich with hot peppers, dipped in gravy. First time having one of those. It was really good. Although I think I prefer a French Dip with the cheese and toasted roll. Would eat again though.

The highlight of my eating was the bacon double cheeseburger from Small Cheval which is a stripped down menu from the flagship restaurant Au Cheval. My coworker brought this place up and it triggered a memory in the deep recesses of my brain. I think I saw their burgers on Instagram or an article somewhere. Thank god I stored it away and remembered because this was me as I took my first bite.
 

Something about the combination of the bun, seasoning on the beef, bacon, cheese house made dijonaise, thinly sliced pickles, and chopped onions was like nothing I have ever had. I eat burgers everywhere. It's how I like to judge a place. If you can't make a good burger then you likely can't do anything else well. This is the best burger I have ever eaten. I'll give it a 9.5/10 only because if I give it a 10/10 and someone else comes along with a better burger I am screwed. 

Disclaimer: I am much more of a fan of a smashburger style patty than a big ole' half pound or larger patty. I find the crispy exterior is just a better mouthfeel than biting into a thick patty.

Wish I'd known you were headed to Chicago, my brother was a Chef there until last year when he moved to Canada. We went and visited him a year or so ago and he took us to some absolutely amazing Chicago restaurants. I asked him one afternoon to take me to get the best chicago-dog in the city and, surprisingly, he took me to a food truck that parks outside of a Home Depot near Wrigley Field. I tried several hot dogs while I was there, but that one was far and away the best. Man, lots of good eats in Chicago.

Yeah I skipped the Chicago dog due to lack of time. Wish I could have tried one though. I also skipped deep dish because fuck that. If I want a lasagna I'll eat a lasagna.
