Good Eats - JPolen01 - 10-25-2011 Inspired by my latest food endeavor, I created this thread. Where are your favorite places to eat around Harrisonburg or whatever town you live in? No chains allowed in this thread. Hole in the wall, mom and pop shops only. I am a foody and always looking for new places to eat. I know I'm not the only one who likes to eat so let's see what ya got. No pics? Don't post. No one likes to read about some amazing food they can't see. I'll start this thread off with my lunch today. Took a trip to the taco truck off Resevoir St (near the intersection of Cantrell). I got 3 tacos. 1 Carnita, 1 Spicy Pork, 1 Chorizo. Cilantro, onions, and red salsa on top. Damn they were good. My friend got a quesadilla with chorizo. Only got a picture of mine but his looked damn good too.
Re: Good Eats - JustinG - 10-25-2011 Taco Truck is legit. Also a big fan of BBQ Ranch on 11 North of Hburg. Calhouns was good, but ive heard they are turning into a Capital Ale House, which is very legit, so keep an eye out for that. The obvious Dave's and Charro. Also a good place is the truck stop on the right as your on 11 headed South towards Bridgewater. Re: Good Eats - JohnC - 10-25-2011 Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I'm a big fan of Dave's Taverna (chicken souvlaki and fries!), and of course the Little Grill on the north side of town is great. Is the Indian American Caf├® still around? I loved that place about 10 years ago... Re: Good Eats - Goodspeed - 10-25-2011 Head over to the Sub Station & Rico's Tacos, in between 7-Eleven and University Motors on S. Main (near 243). They make cheap, good Mexican that kicks ass. I'm partial to their chicken/steak burritos - delicious and relatively light, i.e. you don't feel like a waddling sack of death afterwards. Jack Brown's across from Dave's makes a tasty burger and fried oroes that are awesome. No pics cuz I ain't in Hburg. Too much stuff to list for Nova. Re: Good Eats - ScottyB - 10-25-2011 JohnC Wrote:Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I'm a big fan of Dave's Taverna its not just you. i could eat there every day (thankfully i was poor enough not to, or i'd have gained about 60 pounds). i have no idea if its still there, but for cheap and plentiful i always dug Jess's Quick Lunch. around where I am in NC there is some great homegrown stuff. next time i'm out i'll snap some shots. Re: Good Eats - JPolen01 - 10-25-2011 Just remembered I had this picture on my phone. Again with the mexican theme. Local taco shop in my home town of Elkridge, MD has some of the most authentic mexican food and best tacos. Last time I was there I tried a torta (mexican sandwich). It had fried chicken, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, jalepenos, and sour cream on toasted bread. Rice on the side. One of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten  As posted earlier Jack Brown's does make some delicious burgers. If you like wings, the owner just opened a place next door called Billy Jack's. They've got ballin ass wings (3 sauces) and fresh donuts for dessert. Check it out sometime! Re: Good Eats - Mike - 10-25-2011 bbq ranch every time i'm down that way. Re: Good Eats - SlimKlim - 10-25-2011 BBQ Ranch is probably my H-burg favorite. So friggin good. I also like Pennybackers downtown, they have really good sandwiches, and when the weather is nice you can eat on the roof and soak up a pretty good view of downtown. Good times. Dave's Taverna is pretty good, but I tended to prefer my gyros in the middle of the night, so Dave's Express was a frequent haunt. God bless those glorious Greek bastards for producing something that good that late out of a gas station. Re: Good Eats - Jewels - 10-25-2011 Sushi Jako, not the best sushi I have had, but not bad for a Korean dude. Re: Good Eats - Evan - 10-25-2011 Jalisco's is great, better than Charro's IMO. never had BBQ ranch I dont think, im assuming thats not the place next to klines is it? that place sucked. ill have to try it next time im in town. Calhouns had pretty good food and good atmosphere. it was the go-to 'parents visiting' restaurant. JPolen01 Wrote:No pics? Don't post. No one likes to read about some amazing food they can't see.lol, nobody gives a shit what someones lunch looks like sitting on a plate. most people eat food, not look at pictures of it. Re: Good Eats - Jake - 10-25-2011 Evan Wrote:Jalisco's is great, better than Charro's IMO. +1 on Jalisco's. I've taken my parents there a few times and would go back. Pretty good and relatively cheap. BBQ Ranch is north of HBurg by maybe two miles. From downtown, you go north on 11 and it's on your left near an 18-wheeler shop. Pennybackers is great. Nice variety of soups/sammiches and the rooftop dining is cool. Daves is a good standby. It doesn't really wow me though. I think Jack Brown's is overpriced and serves marginal food. The beer selection is varied but paying ~$16 (iirc) for a smallish cheeseburger, fries and one beer is pretty outrageous to me, especially in a college town. I can (and do) pay that now, in NoVA, but you get considerably more food for your dollar versus JB's. I'm so bummed that Cally's (Calhouns) is gone. It was a nice place and the beer was good. Re: Good Eats - Mike - 10-25-2011 jaslico's is money (jumbo burritos on wednesday were a given for my crew). was never a fan of el charro, either. bbq ranch is well outside town. i never tried that place next to kline's. Re: Good Eats - JustinG - 10-25-2011 Jake Wrote:I'm so bummed that Cally's (Calhouns) is gone. It was a nice place and the beer was good. Capital Ale is leaps and bounds above Calhoun's, and I loved Calhouns, and from what ive heard, Calhoun's will have their beers available at Capital Ale. The restaurant stopped but the brewery kept going. Re: Good Eats - JPolen01 - 10-25-2011 Ate at el charro a few weeks ago. Not impressed at all. I thought it was mediocre mexican food for a decent price. I'll stick with the truck I went to today for my tacos and burritos. Main (me gusta) and 33 (no bueno). I'm still partial to Rico's but that could be where you went wrong. I became a fan of their Nachos Texanos. Re: Good Eats - JPolen01 - 10-25-2011 I hit the one on south main by Pheasant Run Re: Good Eats - Jewels - 10-25-2011 We actually ate at the one on 33 tonight. And discussed the difference between the two locations. Rex and I decided that even though the one on S. Main used to be superior, that has in fact changed. The one on 33 is most definitely the better of the two. Re: Good Eats - JustinG - 10-25-2011 Special La Casa #27 1 cheese, 1 beef Nachos Texanos Those are my choices... |
