It's Friday and I'm bored

thought the exact same thing. what happens when you need to like...replace a wheel bearing? who makes the magical carbon compressed unicorn-jerky brake pads for that? whats a shock rebuild cost?

i got sad when i read that progress to get it on track was slow because they ran out of funds....they're in way over their heads. the only realistic way to own one of these as a track toy is if you're so rich that the only reason you don't have the funds to get it properly prepped up is if you're busy closing the deal on a tropical island you just bought or because your learjet needs an interior renovation.

i have a feeling that if they get it complete it'll be run a few times and then either sold off or put in the garage under some spotlights as a neat conversation piece.

If you have the money for the F1 car, Coleman can make you any hats/rotors for actually very cheap (like less than $1k for 4 rotors), and Wilwood does custom pad shapes.

what I worry is electrical and bodywork. Better make molds of those panels now...

Yeah thats the reason it costs less than a new formula ford chassis.
Its really only a fancy attention getter in a shopping mall or a richguy race simulator seat
though that Porsche LMP resin roller went for over $100k, so I guess you could say a real F1 car for less than $60k USD is a pretty good deal.

as long as you go into it realizing you have to gut everything from the car, and run the drivetrain and electrical completely custom i think its reasonable to think you could get it running.

body parts, even if you took a mold and could reproduce something that looks similar, are going to perform very differently under downforce which could turn the car pretty dangerous.

does honda have a customer F1 program like Ferrari does?
Hi Honda, I need a new nose for my 2007 F1 car.
Sure, that will be $100,000. cash or credit?

Electrical is easy. You could get custom machined alloy motorsport hubs. You'd have to replace all of the suspension arms and bolts because they have a fatigue life thats probably past its sell-by date. You'd have to sort out engine mounting.... I guess at that point you have an "F1" car? not sure the point.

Yeah I think the big danger is starting to replace suspension and aero parts with 'sorta-right' parts that weren't designed to work with the original package, which could make the car an open wheel coffin. The bright side is that Joe Trackday is very unlikely to have the skill level or physical fitness to start taking a F1 car to the limit.

Evan Wrote:does honda have a customer F1 program like Ferrari does?
Nope. As far as I know the only team that does that is Ferrari. Lotus has the T125 program which is a quasi-F1 car with a Cosworth V8 engine but that's the only other program that comes close. If someone has the engineering chop or knows someone with engineering chops and has a enough cash for the money-burning furnace, then they can make this work. If you don't have some combination thereof it's gonna be an expensive scale model.

I have to think that just that Honda 3.5L V6TT is gonna set him back at least $40k, if not more. Then once you start getting into custom fabbed this, CNC'ed that, $100k is gonna be in the rear view quickly, on the way to $200k and beyond More power to him if he's able to do it but that sounds like long odds.

So, I saw this post on Reddit earlier. There's a live stream of a Roundabout in the Netherlands. There have been some interesting things people are doing now that people have realized there's a stream of that particular area.

You guys done any Kickstarters,IndieGoGo, etc?

I did the IndieGoGo for Super Troopers 2.

Just saw this and decided to get in on it, given that we have 2 Firesticks upstairs that cannot be controlled by a common universal remote, and way cheaper than a Harmony. It snaps onto your existing streaming device's remote so you can control the TV.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1895389752/sideclick-streamline-your-streaming-experience-0?ref=nav_search">https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/18 ... nav_search</a><!-- m -->

The first design failed to get funding, due to one remote could only work with one type of streaming device. They redesigned it and made it to where you can buy adapters for the remote as you change/upgrade your streaming devices. I did not realize that with Kickstarter, I am only out the $ if they fail to deliver, funding goal not met, my card is not charged, I am ok with that.

We will see.....anyway, what have you guys funded, anything cool?

I haven't funded shit on any of those sites. Everything I see never seems to work out. Usually they are stupid ideas or something that is already available. I know this probably isn't true, but it always strikes me as odd when people want to crowd fund their invention ideas. If your product was good and your business plan was sound, why can't you find a real investor or get a loan?

between the comps you give up to get people interested and the fees you pay to the website... they take a hunk out of you. these should be more of a "boost" and not a "get off the ground" kind of venture.

with a bank, its a business loan with crazy ass requirements.

I funded a ton of stuff. the original Pebble, sticknfind, almond+, a 3d printer and some other stuff im forgetting.
They are *always* alwaysalwaysalways late. Not a couple weeks, not a couple months, at least 6 months.

-pebble probably came closest to being on time (6 mos?) and was a good product. Thought about getting their new version via kickstarter a couple months ago.

-sticknfind was a year late and downright fraudulent. did not work AT ALL.

-almond+ was over a year late and is still missing significant functionality almost a year after *that*. I wrote a professionally (ie not rant) requesting a timeline (Im a contributor, not customer after all) of what functionality i should expect and when. I got a snarky nasty response from the ceo that im so ungrateful and I should sell my almond+ on ebay.

-3d printer. was supposed to get it in may, now they say september. who knows if it will suck, but it was cheap enough to write off if it does.

Im totally done with crowdfunding.
until the next cool thing i really really want for relatively cheap comes around......

I gotta admit I really like the idea, that stupid firestick remote is small, easily lost, and never by the harmony.
But Id really prefer a new harmony remote that supports firesticks since my decade old harmony is on its last legs anyway
