If you want to go into a Project Mgmt IT/Ops role get an entry level Project Coordinator role via a 6month to 1yr contract somewhere with hopes of getting hired by the company. Most Proj Coord roles have admin like job responsibilities (Schedule meetings, track/create documents in Word/Excel, manage a shared mailbox, etc)

I got my role at Capital One via S3, which is a contracting firm that places people with companies in the Richmond Area. If you haven't already, hit me up on LinkedIn, and I can put you in touch with some people.

Discalimer: That is the path I took, YMMV

well, I lost my 4 paragraph initial post, but i'll give the high-level details:

JMU Class of 2005 - B.S. ISAT (information management, telecom, and energy)

1st job post college - interviewer and I had about an hour long conversation about Madison Motorsports and automotive subjects (nothing related to the position). hired. left after it got boring and I was being under utilized (DoD contract).
2nd job - SAP Americas hired me under a bootcamp initiative and I traveled to client sites (private industry) implementing solutions of varying software products. ok salary, nice bonuses, lots of hours. left because I didn't want to travel so much (pretty much every week). left just shy of the 50% payout date for employer 401(k) contributions... don't do this... Pay attention to your vesting schedule! (left between projects)
<4 month period of unemployment - the first few weeks were great, but it quickly got boring>
3rd job - DHS contract in the DC area after not finding employment offerings in locations (fall/winter of 2008/09) I was interested in moving to. basically fended for myself since I was the only one doing what I do on the team. SAP PI integration, some SAP Portal work, and some Android/iOS application work.

Currently our team is looking for a veteran ABAPer for our O&M contract. I doubt the audience is here, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Just a heads up, I gave the recruiter guy I know everyone's info who reached out to me and provided it but I have not heard from him since we spoke last. I asked him if it was fine for me to give out his phone / email info so you guys can connect with him directly but don't have an answer yet. If I hear from him I will let y'all know!

A little late to the party but this thread is relevant to my interests currently - definitely looking to make a move in the near future so if anyone knows of any related opportunities in the DC area (ideally along the 66 corridor) let me know. More than happy to discuss further or pass along a resume.

2011 BBA in Marketing

Got an internship with a consulting company (read gov't contracting) in 2010 and got a job right out school and been there ever since, but ironically have never done government work. My experience has mostly been in project management and requirements analysis - focused on delivery of software applications mostly but have done a bit of pure consulting/strategy work in the marketing and customer experience areas as well. My work has focused in the financial services and professional education areas, but at the end of the day web applications are web applications and the skills and techniques for PMs and requirements analysts are largely transferable. Been promoted a couple times but starting to hit a bit of an artificial ceiling so time to make a change.

Happy to answer any questions anyone has about the DC contracting/consulting space - or to pump a resume to a recruiter if someone is interested.

That's brutal. Sad

I've sent out more than a few cover letters only to notice typos later. Not a great feeling.

It's a good idea to send your resume, etc. to three people to pour over it. The more you read things, the harder it is to spot mistakes.

Funny thing is, I did. I sent it to two of my friends and my fiance for critiques and none of them caught it but I guess they weren't really looking for it either.

Makes me feel sick. I'm wondering if I missed out on my top choice that happened to have an opening in my area cause they called and found out it was a wrong number and moved on. I mean maybe they just didn't think I was the right person but I'll never know. At least one like screener emailed to setup a call and when he got the wrong number, he emailed and said the number was wrong.

As a matter of fact, anyone who would like their resume reviewed I'd be happy to look over. I'd also appreciate it if somebody could give me feedback on mine.

I think with the amount of candidates they likely don't have time. But if it was me, and sorry Sullivan, that resume would go right into the trash if you can't even get your own number right.

+1

People make honest mistakes, but most employers have the luxury of moving on to the next one in the stack.

I would also like to point out how broken interviewing/hiring is in so many companies.

I had so many unreturned calls after being asked to follow up, as well as weeks of no communication and then a call asking for another interview almost 3-4 weeks after the initial one.

Da Fuq?

In so many instances I had much better experiences with the 3rd party companies hired by the company to do recruiting than I did when I'd interact with the same company, different role, but an in house recruiter. I am sure it had to do with the 3rd party getting paid for placements vs in-house not, but Jesus. It was mind blowingly bad.

Yea. I don't blame them at all and fully expect them to trash my entire application because of that which is why it makes me sick to think i did something like that.

And in all honestly, I think my resume is kind of shitty. Maybe it's not and I've had people tell me they thought it was good but to me it just seems like it's on the shittier side of resumes.

But yes my email was correct and a couple of the companies didn't have online things and I simply attached my resume and cover letter in an email.

But also yes to what Justin said. My biggest problem with the entire job search thing is that a company won't take the 30 seconds to shoot out a email saying they're moving forward with someone else. I had to contact them and a month after my application, they tell me they're in the final stages with two other candidates. At least shoot me an email. I mean shit, your job is hiring (or not hiring) people.
