They have a surprising amount of room in them. I guess it's just the way the car looks, but they really aren't that small. I think the mk7 is even bigger so I'd go check one out before you rule them out based on storage space.

Good idea on this thread. My thread could definitely be split off into this and a personal finance thread.

Honestly all these threads boil down to these suggestions:
GTI Miata Some variant of BMW 3 series Mazda 3 Mazda CX-5 TSX Wagon even though no one can ever find a decent one (price or condition) but suggest it anyway. Focus ST even though it's always immediately shit on Lexus IS WRX/Outback/Forester BMW 5 series And, when people ask for more sport focused: Mustang Corvette Miata again S2000 E36 M3 So, peruse through that list and you should be good.

I think a VW is the answer here but I would say take a good look at a FiST or FoST. There are huge rebates on them now to where you can get a brand new Fiesta ST for about $16k and a Focus ST for $19-20k. Has me considering going to two cars again.
EDIT: Didn't realize GTI's were going for $20k new, that's almost a no brainer. Much nicer interior, strong performance, DSG. Win, win, win.

I was looking at used hatches and Mike/RJ told me to just buy new because they're going for cheap. I really don't like the depreciation hit, but used were only like $1000 cheaper than what I got new.

See also why I'm going to buy another new car. With the cheaper financing, its more expensive to buy used.
