At the end of the day you have to decide what's going to give you the best quality of life. My decisions have definitely impacted my career growth, but I dont regret giving myself a shorter commute and working fewer hours.

Let him at least get settled in and experience NoVA before you all crush his soul with the reality of it

Congrats on accepting the job offer dude that is super exciting! I used to build houses in Kirkpatrick Farms right down Rt. 50 from the "Lots of apts down here, not much else going on" area. People paid stupid money for them back then, I wonder how much they are selling / renting for now

Wait what is wrong with Vienna? There are plenty of cheap places to live in homes there with driveways and street parking if you have a few roommates. I did it my first year out of college and was paying like $550/month to live in an old house. I even had two jeeps there at one point in time. Not to mention you'd have like a 10 minute drive to Tyson's corner and plenty of food options in downtown Vienna and the Mosaic District.

Trust me, you'll appreciate living closer to work and things that you need (grocery, beer, tools). You can spend a whole damn day just running around for errands.

Seems like a no brainer?

(I'm biased in that I lived in Vienna and commuted to Tysons, and then moved to Dunn Loring and did that commute until switching to Rosslyn via metro.)

Jake Wrote:5. Parking 2 cars can be doable pretty easily. Most apartments will give you one parking space for free and you can pay per-car otherwise ($50/car seems to be the going rate). You may find an apartment complex with private garages for rent (as I have now). In that case, you'll probably pay for the garage and get one other spot for free. Townhomes, obviously, will have parking/garage space assigned per-home.
.

Well, fuck you guys then. I won't accept parking complaints from friends down there anymore. I pay $30/yr for the privilege of parking on the street and moving my car once a week for street cleaning (which btw, is impossible to find to start with.) Only other option is garage parking which is, at minimum, $250/mo.

Ummm have you looked recently? A 3br townhouse is like $3,500/mo.

I did tell him that if he stumbles across something for a good price in Vienna he should probably jump on it because of the reasons you mention, but I believe it's gonna be out of his budget unless he manages to find a big house of kids looking for their 4th roommate or something.

It ain't so bad... There are apartments by me (Fairfax Corner area) that have detached garages from your actual apartment that you can rent for another $100 a month. A miata and moped will easily fit in there, and then park the truck wherever in the complex.

If you can do "flex hours" the commute from FFX to Tyson's isnt terrible, 30-45 mins. If you wanted to do a bit cheaper you could do Centreville apt complex's but that will add onto your commute.

Also, maybe make a post and you'll get lucky: https://www.reddit.com/r/novarent/

Also another idea is maybe call up those apt complex's and see if you can just rent the garage space w/o living there. Keep the miata and scooter and get them when its nice out.

Plenty of those on CL.. $800 or less all day. Was there even a budget amount listed?

There are cheaper rentals in Vienna, especially sharing rooms, but they are getting harder to find I think. If you can swing that location in your budget, its going to be the best compromise.

Sharing rooms like sharing a bedroom with somebody?

Spoke with Papa Thiewes today. Thinking Vienna, Sterling, Ashburn, Reston, some other places I don't remember. 1 bed, bath and up (if I find roomies) with at least a garage for me. Looking around $800-$1350 a month.

One random tip I thought of last night - download Parkmobile and set it up when you get a chance. It lets you pay for street parking around Arlington and DC with your phone (you store your car and credit card info in the app) and makes life super easy. Parking is generally free on weekends, but on the off chance you end up needing to pay to park at 6 PM on a Wednesday, you'll be glad you set it up ahead of time.

$1200 (for the whole house) would easily get you a 4br house with a garage if you look around in Harrisonburg. If you have roommates that's about as cheap as you're going to get. Rent/housing in general is pretty damn cheap in Harrisonburg.

Yeah my 2bd 2bth apt is the lower end of that range, but if you look at 1bd places they also fall into that range. Its weird. Anywhere of decent quality that is. I figured my entire place would equal half a smaller place up there. Shit, my friend rents one small ass room in a shit house and shares a bathroom in Fairfax and pays more for that than I do for my entire place and technically I have 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms but there's only 2 of us.

That kind of pricing is mostly "with roommates" up here depending on location (heavily dependent). A 1 BR with no private garage is more like $1400 minimum, at least the last time I looked.
