How do you do your work?
#21
Considering I don't have a desk job. I walk at a very brisk pace the whole time. In an 8 hour serving shift, I easily cover 8 or more miles. Pretty rough on my knees, which is why I wear memory foam shoes with Dr. Scholes pads on the top of them. The only sitting I get to do is when I get in my truck to leave. No breaks, either, unfortunately, no matter how long the shift is.

School work, I just sit down. I need something new though. I can't sit for more than 30 minutes without my back getting all screwy. My shoulder blades tense up and my arms go a little numb. Even happens when I'm driving.

Your forearm should be level with the desk so that your wrist isn't angled up or down... and if you're still having an issue I don't know what to tell ya :dunno:
When sitting I also find a palmrest for the keyboard to be helpful, and I never angle the keyboard up, if anything I like it angled down like this guy

Same thing can apply for the mouse, maybe a wrist rest would help you there too, otherwise it's inevitable that your wrist is angled up a bit.

I sit all day, because cubicle-jockey.

My chair allows for shitty posture and I take advantage of it... I keep the chair at a good height, so that my elbows are at the right height for keyboard/mouse use. But, the back can recline and I typically sit in Gangsta-Lean mode for a large chunk of my day. It makes it so I'm not looking down at the monitor, but rather straight-on.

I have one of those fancy mesh ergonomic chairs at work so I slouch like a fuckwit all day, naturally.

I sit down all day in a cube, kind of sucks but windows right behind me provide a more open feeling. I also try to walk around a bit every hour. And when all the stars align - no meeting, no impending deadline, remembered my clothes, I might even run a few miles at lunch. It's amazing what that does for the rest of my day, should be more committed to it.

For the first hour of my day (daily meetings), I ride my trainer in the basement.
For the rest of the typical day I have a pretty regular desk with a Sayl chair (http://www.hermanmiller.com/products/se ... hairs.html). Eyes in middle of 30" screen, chair arms slightly below desk height because the chair is meant to lean so that gives me a nice straight shot at the keyboard.
I get up a lot to eat/check on cats/do chores/run errands.
I use a "Magic" Trackpad and couldn't imagine going back to a mouse. Has reduced so much wrist movement it's insane.

That reminds me, need a good chair for home. Usually home 2-3 days a week and on a normal day it isn't a problem when I'm getting up a lot but on busy days, current chair kills my butt/back. I'll have to check out one of the stand or sit desk options while I'm at it.

I'm laughing now looking at that pic, because maybe if the guy would pull those two cinderblocks toward him a bit, and upgrade from a 12" CRT, he might be able to see what he's typing too

I generally sit at a desk for 2-3 hours a day, normally in the mornings. From ~11am or so till the end of the day I do a mix of sitting in the car and walking/moving around.

My typical office posture look like
[Image: images_maninchair.jpg]

Low n slow is how I computer, desk is about even with my neck.

I'm sure my back will hate my in 5 years. Few people have stand up things on their desk but they take up a ton of room. Might have to try one of those exercise balls and see if that forces me to quit slouching.

At home, a couple years ago I bought a geekdesk electric sit/stand frame only, then put a solid butcherblock top on it and finished it with a few coats of waterlox varnish. http://www.geekdesk.com/ Ended up much cheaper and much nicer than the complete desks they sell.
Now Id probably buy the ikea electric sit/stand desk since its so much cheaper, but Id like to demo one in person first. The geekdesk is built like you could put an elephant on the desk.
One bummer about the sit stand desk is that while it helped one back problem it introduced another. Ive found that when I stand still for long perionds my lower back cramps up. I looked into getting one of those desk treadmills but spending 3x as a normal treadmill just to put the controls on the frame is too retarded for me to swallow.

For a chair I use the staples hyken chair. Its every bit as comfy as the herman/millers Ive had at work for about 1/8 of the price. Just not quite as durable or solidly built. The mesh bottom is key because my office gets pretty hot which avoids swamp-ass and having fart-through ability is a bonus.

Any tips to reduce eye fatigue? I try to take a break every hour and walk around/look away from the monitors, but some days when I get home I can feel how tired my eyes are.

are you craning to look at your monitor or not looking at it straight on?

i have the same issue and sometimes its because i'm working in detail and trying to squint like a foot away from the monitor.

otherwise just getting away and focusing on far away stuff out the window is probably the best way to relax your eyes after a long monitor stint

Not craning. Just staring at (2) 22 inch monitors less than 12 inches from my face. That might be the problem?

i have the same setup as you. twin 22 monitors, about 18in from my face.

i find i get the worst stain in high contrast times of day, like looking at bright monitors in a dark room. i don't know the solution other than just getting away from them as often as possible.

12" strikes me as really close :dunno:
I have mine at work more like 18-24", and the only other thing I can recommend is reducing the brightnness as much as is reasonable. I've also put a light behind my monitors, and I'm not sure if it helps with eyestrain, but it's less like looking into a cave and makes me happy.

I was just reading something the other day about how it's recommended to look away and at something in the distance for about 1 minute every 10 minutes. I also turned down the brightness on my monitors and inverted contrast on things like excel sheets so that it's white font on a gray background, which helps a lot.

if anyone works a lot at night or low light situations, I highly recommend https://justgetflux.com/
I use it on everything (or similar on android) and it's soooo much better than being blasted in the face with bright blue light late at night. Eyes don't hurt like they used to.

I just remembered I found this recently. Sets a timer and gives you a message to take a break and look away from the screen. Only annoying thing is that you need to leave it open in a tab in your browser. Otherwise, it is a good little reminder for when you get wrapped up in things.

They are in the process of renovating all of our buildings. My team got to move into the first one that was renovated. All the desks are motorized to allow for standing, and it is pretty awesome.

We have 2 treadmill desks you can book time on.....limited to 2 MPH, haven't tried one yet.

But depending on my day, if I am sitting in meetings a lot, my desk is usually up in standing mode. I am a fan, I will miss it if I lose it now that I have one.

We also have these crazy ass chairs in a lot of our informal meetings rooms/spaces. I almost killed myself the first time I sat in one, but they have similar characteristics to sitting on an exercise ball, so I try to take advantage of them when I can.
