How do you do your work?
#1
I happen to have recently transitioned from an exercize ball (did that for about 2-3 years) to a standing desk. Puts me above the cube wall and I can see the windows! I cheat and lean on a huge file cabinet and get breaks at meetings and lunch. But there's all kinds around our office, and a surprising # of people are trying standing desks. How about you, how do you primarily work?

I didn't include treadmill desk or like, suspended from bungee cords in the poll, but by all means explain.

I chose hybrid, but the description isn't really right for me. I'm on the phone about 80% of the day talking to customers so I tend to walk around the office a lot or pace back and forth. The other 20% I'm sitting at my desk. How did you like the exercise ball? Did you notice any improvements in anything?

Close enough. I should have included walking I guess! Or maybe driving and sitting airports for that matter, I know plenty of sales people are doing that more than 50% of the time. I guess I should clarify your main workstation, if applicable. Half the reason I made the poll was just for the laid back chair option, there's like 3 people here that sit like that, you can barely see them and it makes me lol. One of them did tip thier chair over one day and I was like WTF is going on :dunno:

I liked the ball, I remember it taking a couple weeks for the muscles in my back and legs get used to it, but then it was just 2nd nature. It made me move around a bit more so I figured it must be at least a little better for me. And people think it's fun to kick it and/or steal it. It got snagged/cut on a sharp thing under my desk Sad so I figured it was time to try something else.

I bought a platform for my monitor/keyboard that has adjustable height so I can stand up and sit down whenever at work:

I also got a motorized stand up desk for my home office. Ikea just started selling it recently, and it only costs about $130 more than the Varidesk platform. Was pretty easy to put together too.

Since I've started standing at work I don't have sciatica pain anymore and my back feels way better. Now I just need to get some weights and do squats while at work.

I'm stuck sitting down at a cube all day. I may have to move around for meetings or talking to others at their desk but mostly sitting all damn day.

If you want to try it, you don't have to go all pimp like Gerald, just get out a screwdriver and move some crap around and you too could have an awesome workstation like me!

This - though I try to get up at least every couple of hours to walk around the office - usually to the most inconvenient and far away water cooler and back. I also spend at least half my lunch hour just walking around outside.

But yeah, I'd like to work in an environment with standing desks. Or, you know, outside.

Deloitte is pretty supportive of different desks, I don't know if you work client site or not though. I have back issues, and standing up for more than 10-15 minutes in one place kills my back. Walking/running/moving around is just fine :dunno:

sweet, I highly recommend one of these pumps if you don't have one already, instead of the little jerk-off hand pump

My coworkers were highly entertained when I had to pump it up the first time. Is there a better plug than the one that comes with it? I have to keep adding air once a week or so.

No, and I figured that plug style would suck, but I was lucky with mine. Added a pump or two like every two months. I will sell you CHANNING'S MAGIC BALL PLUG for only $100. OR, you could just order a "Sunny Health and Fitness" ball from Amazon and cross your fingers, that's what I did. I actually got away with the 65mm, overinflated a bit :dunno:

We're not on client site but our desk options are pretty limited here in one of our satellite offices. We don't have the availability like Rosslyn or McLean for different desk options.

Granted I haven't asked but I guess I'd have to get creative building a standing desk here.

Not gonna lie, I don't necessarily lean back but I do sit really low and have my armpits at desk level lol. I know I should do something like standing or the exercise ball, just haven't brought myself to do it yet. It is supposed to help with back issues right?

I sit in a normal computer chair at the desk in my office at home. Sometimes I will take my laptop downstairs to the main cave and sit indian style on the couch. Or I am sitting in an airplane or moving about from cab to hotel to meeting to hotel to cab etc.

i build a standing desk about 4 years ago due primarily to getting tons of back and neck pain from craning over to look at a monitor from a low desk and chair. i also hated how my legs felt sitting for 8-10 hours straight.

i do still like to sit for a few hours to either rest my feet or eat at my desk, so i got a tall desk chair to go with the standing desk. i love it now, much more comfortable and as a bonus all my stuff is up out of my kids reach.

basically the flat desk surface is a 10' x 18" rejected melamine panel from a custom closet installation. its mounted on 2 cheap ikea PC cabinets and then those are fitted onto 2 riser structures i built when i decided to convert to standing. whole thing is worth probably $100 in materials and time. i'll take a shot tomorrow for anyone interested.

When I worked in an office last year we had 1 chair that was "broken" into the LAID WAY THE HELL BACK configuration and ummm..that was my chair haha. Occasionally my armpits would sway below the desk level. I would normally just bring the keyboard into my lap and the armrest was big enough for mouse to slide on. This also made it easier for me to get my foot on top of the computer tower under the desk since that chair reclined that far back enough. And maybe it was the design of the chair but it was never hard to sit up right, I'd just lean forward and the whole chair would rock me upwards. It was hella comfortable. Best office chair ever.

I do have a question though, I work in a computer lab for school work 80% of the time and I can't mess with this chair and its in normal people position. So how do you guys position your upper body so that your wrist doesn't hurt when using the mouse? I can't figure out how to either set myself/move my arm/hold the mouse so my wrist doesn't hurt. Unless i bring the mouse to the armrest or in my lap my wrist has a lingering pain, nothing crazy.
